Chapter 14: The Letter That Changed Everything

The letter arrived at Daniel's office in a sealed evidence envelope the following morning.

Dad, Brittany, Rachel, and I sat around the conference table while Daniel documented the package and confirmed that the seal had not been disturbed.

Thomas Reed joined us by video call. He wanted to witness the opening because he had helped my mother preserve the original documents years earlier.

Daniel carefully removed the envelope.

My mother's handwriting crossed the front in blue ink.

For Emily and Brittany. Together.

Brittany reached for my hand.

I let her hold it.

Daniel opened the envelope and removed three pages.

The first began with my mother's name and the date, October 14, 2021.

My dear girls,

If you are reading this together, then the truth has finally reached the people who deserve it.

Emily, you were born into a family that wanted to protect you. Brittany, you were born into a family that was afraid of what the truth might reveal.

Neither of you chose the circumstances that brought you into this world. Neither of you is responsible for the choices the adults made.

Dad lowered his eyes.

Daniel continued reading.

I discovered that Laura Bennett had been involved in financial misconduct before she entered Michael's life. I also discovered that she had taken control of a family trust connected to her younger sister's child.

That child was Brittany.

Brittany covered her mouth.

My mother had known.

She had known that Vanessa was not Brittany's biological mother, that Elizabeth had tried to maintain contact, and that money had been used to influence the adoption.

But the next paragraph changed everything.

I also discovered that Laura had been approaching Michael's business contacts under different names. She wanted access to the Carter family's assets. When I confronted her, she threatened to expose private information about Elizabeth and Brittany.

I refused to let her use a child as leverage.

Dad's face tightened.

“Your mother confronted Vanessa before I met her,” he whispered.

Daniel continued.

I cannot prove that Laura intended to enter Michael's life when I first discovered her activities. But I know she became interested in him after learning about the Carter trust.

She believed that if she married Michael, she could eventually gain control over the house and the assets held for Emily.

Rachel shook her head in disbelief.

“That's why she changed her name.””

Dad stared at the letter.

“I thought I had met someone who understood what it meant to lose a spouse.””

My heart ached for him.

He'd wanted companionship after Mom died. Vanessa had offered it, and he'd mistaken her carefully constructed story for honesty.

Daniel read the next page.

Laura told me that Elizabeth had abandoned Brittany. That was not what the records showed. Elizabeth had tried to maintain contact, but Laura controlled the correspondence and repeatedly told her that the child was better off without her.

I confronted Laura with the evidence. She told me to stay out of her family affairs.

I told her that a child is not property, and that no one should have to buy the right to know their own family.

Brittany began sobbing.

“I thought she never wanted me.””

Dad moved his chair closer.

“I'm sorry.””

Brittany shook her head.

“You didn't know.””

He looked at her.

“Not knowing doesn't mean I can't be sorry for what you've lost.””

Daniel turned to the final page.

There is one more thing you must understand.

Laura's financial misconduct is serious, but the most dangerous thing she has done is convince people that love gives them ownership over others.

Emily, your inheritance is not a reward for being my daughter. It is a responsibility I prepared for you because I wanted you to have choices.

Brittany, your birth does not make you a threat to Emily. You do not need to take something from her to prove that you belong.

If Laura has told either of you otherwise, she has lied.

I felt tears running down my face.

For years, Vanessa had told me that I was selfish for wanting my own room, my own phone, and a place inside the house where my mother had lived.

She had convinced Brittany that she needed to compete with me for love.

She had turned two girls into enemies because she feared what might happen if we compared notes.

Daniel placed the letter on the table.

“There's an attachment.””

He removed a second sheet.

It was a notarized amendment to my mother's trust. It confirmed that the house could not be transferred without independent legal review and that my inheritance was protected from claims made by a spouse who was not a beneficiary.

Dad exhaled sharply.

“That means Vanessa's filing should be rejected.””

“Likely,” Daniel said.

“The court will still need to resolve the disputed documents, but this is significant evidence.””

Thomas spoke through the video call.

“Your mother gave me a copy of that amendment. I remember telling her it was unusually thorough.””

Dad rubbed his forehead.

“Why didn't you tell me about the letter before?””

Thomas's expression grew solemn.

“Because your wife instructed me to keep it sealed until both girls could read it together. She believed Laura would try to use the information to turn the children against one another.””

Brittany stared at the page.

“She knew Mom would do that.””

“Yes,” Thomas answered.

“She was afraid of it.””

For a while, we sat in silence.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He stepped outside to take the call. When he returned, his expression was serious.

“The investigator handling the financial complaint has obtained a warrant for records associated with Vanessa's former business accounts. The evidence suggests that some of the disputed transfers may have been concealed through companies connected to the adoption agency.””

Dad stood.

“Can they prove she stole the money?””

“They're building the case. We must let the investigation proceed.””

“And the forged signature?””

“The handwriting examiner has found substantial inconsistencies between the disputed transfer document and your verified signatures. The final report is pending.””

Dad nodded.

Then he looked at Brittany.

“There's something we still need to establish.””

She understood immediately.

“The DNA test.””

Daniel had arranged a voluntary test through an accredited laboratory. The samples had been collected the previous day, with the results expected shortly.

Brittany's hands trembled.

“What if I'm not your daughter?””

Dad took her hand.

“Then we'll deal with that truth, too.””

She looked at him with desperate hope.

“And if I am?””

He answered without hesitation.

“Then we'll figure out what that means together.””

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

*Vanessa knows about the letter. She's on her way to the house.*

I showed Dad.

He immediately called Daniel, who contacted the authorities and advised us not to approach Vanessa.

But before anyone could decide what to do, another message appeared.

This one contained a photograph of our front porch.

Vanessa stood beside the door, holding a folder.

Beneath the photograph was a final sentence.

*She says she has proof that Michael signed everything willingly.*

Dad stared at the screen.

Then he picked up his keys.

“I'm not going to let her frighten my daughters anymore.””

Daniel stood immediately.

“You will not confront her alone.””

Dad paused, then nodded.

We drove home together, with Daniel following in his own car.

When we arrived, Vanessa was standing in the living room.

She had placed the disputed transfer documents on the coffee table, arranged neatly beside a photograph of Dad signing papers at a business meeting.

She looked at us and smiled.

“Michael,” she said, “I'm glad you're finally ready to hear my side.””

Dad stopped several feet away.

“There's nothing you can say that will change what you've done.””

Vanessa lifted the folder.

“You might want to look at the last page before you decide that.””

Daniel stepped forward and examined it.

His expression changed.

The page contained Dad's signature.

This time, the middle initial was correct.

And beneath the signature was a date from the week before Vanessa and Dad had married.

Dad stared at it.

“I never signed this.””

Vanessa smiled more broadly.

“Then perhaps you'll remember who did.””

She turned toward Brittany.

Brittany went white.

May you like

Because the witness signature at the bottom belonged to someone she recognized.

Her biological mother, Elizabeth Bennett.
