Chapter 11: Two Mothers, One Hospital Room

The hospital records took Daniel nearly four hours to obtain through the proper legal channels.

By then, I had worn a path between Rachel's kitchen and living room, checking my phone every few minutes for another message from Brittany.

None came.

Dad sat at the dining table with his laptop open, reviewing documents Daniel had sent. Every so often, he rubbed his eyes and whispered something I couldn't hear.

Finally, he looked up.

“Emily, come sit down.””

I took the chair beside him.

“Did you find something?””

He turned the laptop toward me.

The document was an old hospital birth register. Most of the information had been redacted to protect patient privacy, but the dates and portions of the records were visible.

On October 14, 2006, two baby girls had been delivered at the same hospital within minutes of each other.

One was mine.

The other belonged to a woman whose name had been withheld in the copy Daniel received.

“What does this mean?”” I asked.

Dad stared at the screen.

“Not enough to draw conclusions.””

“But Brittany was born that year.””

“Yes.””

“And Vanessa said she adopted her.””

“Yes.””

I looked at the dates again.

“Dad, what if Brittany is the other baby?””

He closed the laptop halfway.

“We need to verify that.””

“Then why are we sitting here?””

“Because if we make an accusation based on incomplete records, we could hurt innocent people.””

I wanted to argue, but his expression stopped me.

He was afraid.

Not of Vanessa's anger or the legal battle.

He was afraid of discovering that the woman he'd married had built their family around a lie.

Daniel arrived shortly afterward carrying a folder.

“The hospital has confirmed that both deliveries occurred on the same day,” he said.

“But the records we have do not establish a relationship between the children.””

“Can you identify Brittany's biological parents?”” I asked.

“Not without the appropriate authorization or a lawful basis to access those records.””

Dad stood.

“Then we'll get the authorization.””

Daniel nodded.

“I've already contacted the attorney handling the adoption-record request. We should have guidance soon.””

I sat back, frustrated.

Everyone seemed to know something except me.

Then Rachel placed a hand on my shoulder.

“Emily, your mother spent years trying to protect you. We need to respect that enough to find out what she actually knew.””

I looked at her.

“What if she knew Brittany was my sister?””

Rachel's eyes widened.

“Your biological sister?””

I nodded.

“What if Vanessa adopted her because she knew something about Mom's trust?””

Dad's expression hardened.

“That's possible. But we won't assume it.””

He turned toward Daniel.

“Can we examine the letter Thomas Reed is retrieving tomorrow?””

“That's the plan.””

At ten the next morning, Thomas met us at Daniel's office. He brought a sealed archival envelope containing copies of his original investigative notes and several documents recovered from his safety deposit box.

Daniel checked the seals and documented each item before opening the folder.

Thomas sat across from us, looking older than he had the previous day.

“I've spent years wondering whether I failed your wife,” he said.

“I should have protected those records better.””

Dad leaned forward.

“You did what you could.””

Thomas shook his head.

“Your wife trusted me with information that could have changed everything.””

Daniel removed a handwritten letter from the folder.

“This appears to be a copy of a letter addressed to Rachel Bennett,” he said.

“The handwriting matches the samples we have from Mrs. Carter.””

Rachel leaned closer.

“Read it.””

Daniel unfolded the pages.

Rachel, if you are reading this, I was unable to explain what I discovered before it was too late.

Laura Bennett has been using another person's identity to hide her involvement in the financial transfers. I have found evidence that she was connected to a second family before she came into Michael's life.

There is a child involved. The child's future must not become a bargaining chip.

I cannot yet prove every part of the connection, but I know Laura has been asking questions about the Carter trust. She believes Emily's inheritance can solve a problem she has carried for years.

If Laura ever enters our family, please protect Emily. Do not let her use the children against one another.

Rachel covered her mouth.

Dad stared at the page.

“Children,” I whispered.

“Plural.””

Thomas nodded.

“That was the part your mother never explained to me.””

Daniel turned to the next document.

It was a photocopy of a financial transfer from a company associated with Laura Bennett to a private adoption agency.

The payment had been made in late 2006.

The amount was $18,500.

Dad's face went pale.

“Why would someone pay an adoption agency that much money?””

“Not every payment to an adoption agency is improper,” Daniel cautioned.

“We need the underlying records before interpreting it.””

Thomas pointed to the date.

“Look at the timing.””

The transfer occurred three weeks after Brittany's recorded birth.

I felt a chill travel down my spine.

“Vanessa paid for Brittany's adoption?””

“We don't know that yet,” Daniel said.

“The company name appears to be connected to Laura Bennett, but ownership needs to be verified.””

Dad paced toward the window.

“Why would she hide the biological father?””

No one answered.

Then Thomas pulled another sheet from the folder.

“This was attached to the financial records. I didn't understand its significance until I reviewed it again last night.””

It was a handwritten list of names and dates.

One entry had been circled.

*Brittany — biological father: unknown.*

Beside it, Mom had written:

Michael must never be told until I have proof.

Dad turned around.

“Why would your mother mention me in connection with Brittany's biological father?””

I stared at the page.

The room seemed to tilt.

“No,” I whispered.

Dad approached the table.

“Emily?””

I looked at him.

“Could Brittany be your daughter?””

He blinked.

“What?””

“Could Vanessa have had Brittany with you before you met Mom?””

Dad shook his head immediately.

“No. I had never met Vanessa before 2020. Brittany was born in 2006.””

He stopped.

Then he looked at the date again.

October 14, 2006.

The same day I was born.

The same hospital.

Two babies.

A financial transfer.

A woman who had changed her name.

And a letter warning that the children must never be used against each other.

Dad sat down slowly.

“There's only one way to establish the truth.””

Daniel nodded.

“If the relevant parties agree, properly arranged DNA testing could help establish a biological relationship. But first, we need to confirm the adoption records and the identity of the person who signed them.””

I thought of Brittany's message.

She told me never to let you see the letter.

“Dad,” I said, “I think Brittany already knows something.””

He looked at me.

“Then we need to speak with her.””

My phone vibrated.

Brittany had finally replied.

*I'll meet you tomorrow. But you need to know one thing first.*

Another message appeared.

*Mom told me that if I ever found out who my biological father was, I would lose everything.*

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Then a third message arrived.

*Emily, I think your father is my biological father.*
