Chapter 12: The Daughter Vanessa Tried to Hide

Dad read Brittany's message without saying a word.

For a long time, the only sound in Daniel's office was the ticking clock above the door.

Then Dad pushed the phone away.

“I need to think.””

I had never seen him so overwhelmed.

He'd learned that his wife might have manipulated his daughter's inheritance, hidden evidence about his late wife, and possibly lied about a child whose birth coincided with mine.

Now Brittany was claiming he might be her biological father.

“Dad,” I said carefully, “you didn't know.””

He looked at me.

“I know what you're trying to say.””

“Then why do you look like you're blaming yourself?””

“Because if Brittany is my daughter, I need to understand how that happened. And if Vanessa deliberately kept that information from me, I need to know why.””

Daniel closed the folder.

“We should not assume the message is accurate. We'll request the relevant records and arrange a meeting in a controlled setting.””

Dad nodded.

But I could tell he wanted to see Brittany immediately.

So did I.

Not because I had forgiven her for laughing while I slept in the garage.

Because I needed to understand how two girls could grow up in the same house, one protected by lies and the other punished for asking questions.

The meeting was arranged for the following afternoon at Daniel's office.

Brittany arrived wearing jeans and a gray sweatshirt. Her makeup was gone, and her hair was tied into a messy ponytail.

For the first time in years, she looked like a girl my age rather than someone determined to prove she was better than me.

She stopped when she saw Dad.

“Hi, Michael.””

He stared at her.

“You can call me Michael for now.””

Brittany nodded, swallowing hard.

“Okay.””

Daniel gestured toward a chair.

“Before we begin, I want everyone to understand that this meeting is voluntary. No one is required to make a statement or sign anything today.””

Brittany sat across from us.

I remained beside Dad.

He looked at her carefully.

“Why do you think I might be your biological father?””

Brittany pulled a folded paper from her bag.

“Because I found this in Mom's locked drawer.””

She placed it on the table.

It was a copy of a hospital birth record, with several sections blacked out. The date was October 14, 2006.

Dad leaned forward.

“Where did you find this?””

“In her bedroom. The night you came home early.””

She looked at me.

“I went into your room to get my charger. Mom had left the drawer open, and I saw the paper underneath her jewelry box.””

“Why didn't you tell me?”” Dad asked.

Brittany's eyes filled with tears.

“Because she told me what would happen if I did.””

“What did she say?””

Brittany twisted her fingers together.

“She said if I ever told anyone I was adopted, she'd make sure I never saw my biological family. She said they were dangerous people who had abandoned me.””

I felt anger rising in my chest.

“So you decided to make my life miserable instead?””

Brittany flinched.

“No.””

“You laughed when I was sleeping in the garage.””

“I know.””

“You watched me beg to come inside.””

“I know, Emily.””

“Then how can you sit there and act like you're the victim?””

Her face crumpled.

“Because I was horrible to you, and I'm not asking you to forgive me. I'm trying to tell you what I know.””

I looked away.

Dad raised a hand gently.

“Let her finish.””

Brittany wiped her eyes.

“Mom told me you were jealous of me because Dad loved you more. She said you would do anything to keep your inheritance, and that if I wasn't careful, you'd make sure I never got anything.””

I stared at her.

“She told me you were selfish,” Brittany continued.

“She said you used your mother's death to control everyone.””

“That isn't true.””

“I know that now.””

She reached into her bag again and pulled out a small notebook.

“Mom made me write down every time you broke a rule. She said she needed proof in case you tried to have me removed from the house.””

Dad's expression turned cold.

“She asked you to keep records on Emily?””

Brittany nodded.

“She told me it was to protect me.””

“Did you believe her?””

“Yes,” Brittany whispered.

“Because she was my mother, and I didn't know anyone else.””

For a moment, I felt something I hadn't expected.

Not forgiveness.

Recognition.

Brittany had been cruel, but Vanessa had spent years shaping what she believed about our family.

That didn't erase Brittany's choices.

It did explain why she seemed so certain that I deserved less.

Dad opened the hospital record.

“Brittany, do you know the name of your biological mother?””

She shook her head.

“Mom told me her name was Laura Bennett, but she said Laura had died before I was old enough to remember her.””

Dad's face tightened.

“Laura Bennett is Vanessa's former legal name.””

Brittany looked startled.

“What?””

“Your mother changed her name before we met.””

Brittany shook her head.

“No. She told me she was born Vanessa Carter.””

Dad stared at her.

“Carter?””

Brittany nodded.

“She said she chose the name after she married you.””

The room went silent.

Daniel checked the documents.

“Vanessa's current surname is Carter, but she has never been legally married to you under that surname before your marriage.””

Brittany's hands began trembling.

“She told me I was her biological daughter.””

Dad's voice softened.

“Did you ever see adoption papers?””

“Only the copy she showed me when I was little. She said my father had signed away his rights.””

“Do you remember his name?””

Brittany shook her head.

“She covered it with her hand.””

I stared at her.

“Why did you take the gold key?””

Brittany reached into her pocket and placed it on the table.

“Because Mom told me it belonged to my birth mother. She said it opened a box that could prove my biological father had abandoned me.””

She looked directly at Dad.

“But when I found it, I realized she'd been lying about something.””

“What?”” Dad asked.

Brittany's voice broke.

“The key has the initials E.C. engraved on it.””

I leaned forward.

Emily Carter.

My initials.

The key had belonged to my mother.

Brittany looked at me with tears running down her face.

“Mom told me your mother stole it from my biological family. She said you had no right to keep it.””

Dad reached for the key, examining the engraving.

Then Daniel noticed something on the back.

A tiny number had been etched beneath the initials.

*101406.*

October 14, 2006.

The day Brittany and I were born.

Dad closed his fist around the key.

“We're going to find out what this opens.””

Brittany nodded.

Then she looked at me.

“There's something else.””

I waited.

“The night Dad came home, I heard Mom on the phone. She was in the study, and she didn't know I was outside.””

“What did she say?””

Brittany swallowed.

“She said the original letter was gone, and that if Michael learned the truth about the two girls, he would never give her what she wanted.””

Dad leaned forward.

“What did she say next?””

Brittany's eyes filled with fear.

“She said she would rather destroy the trust than let you inherit it.””

I felt cold all over.

Dad stood.

“Daniel, I want every asset in that trust protected immediately.””

Daniel nodded and began making calls.

Brittany looked down at her hands.

“I didn't know she'd do this to you, Emily.””

I stared at her for a long moment.

“You still could have helped me.””

She nodded, crying silently.

“I know.””

I didn't forgive her.

Not yet.

But when she placed the gold key on the table, I understood that she was finally choosing to tell the truth.

Dad took the key to a secure evidence envelope, then looked at both of us.

“Whatever we discover, neither of you is responsible for the choices Vanessa made.””

Brittany wiped her face.

“Michael, if I'm really your daughter, will you hate me?””

Dad's expression broke.

“No.””

He sat beside her.

“If you're my daughter, then you've spent your whole life being lied to by the same person who hurt Emily. And if you're not, I'll still make sure you are treated fairly.””

Brittany covered her face.

For the first time, she cried without trying to make anyone feel sorry for her.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He listened, asked one question, and slowly lowered it.

“Michael,” he said, “the adoption agency has located the original consent form.””

Dad stood.

“Who signed it?””

Daniel looked at Brittany, then at me.

“The signature belongs to a woman named Vanessa Bennett.””

He paused.

“But the biological mother's signature is also on the document.””

Dad's face went white.

May you like

Because the biological mother's name wasn't Laura Bennett.

It was *Vanessa's older sister, Elizabeth Bennett.*
