Chapter 8: The Photograph That Changed Everything

My father stared at the photograph as though it might suddenly explain the last three years of his life.

Vanessa.

Standing beside my mother's hospital bed.

Two months before she died.

"How did she know Evelyn?"" Dad demanded.

Michael leaned back.

"Through a charitable foundation.""

"What foundation?""

"The Evelyn Carter Family Foundation.""

I frowned.

"I've never heard of that.""

Michael nodded.

"Your grandfather established it to support local families and preserve the family's property holdings. Evelyn managed it after inheriting his business interests.""

Dad shook his head.

"Why didn't you tell me any of this?""

"Because Evelyn didn't want you involved in the business.""

"That doesn't explain Vanessa.""

Michael looked at me.

"Your mother suspected someone was manipulating the foundation's accounts. She hired an independent investigator. Vanessa was working as an administrative assistant at the time.""

I stared at him.

"You're saying my stepmother worked for my mother?""

"Yes.""

I remembered Vanessa's first days in our house.

She had always known where everything was.

She knew which drawers contained important documents, where Dad kept his passwords, and which family photographs were stored upstairs.

I'd assumed she was simply organized.

Now I wondered how much she had known before she ever entered our family.

Dad picked up the photograph again.

"Why did Evelyn let her near Emily?""

Michael's face softened.

"Because Evelyn trusted her at first.""

I looked at him.

"What happened?""

He opened his briefcase and removed a second folder.

"Your mother discovered that several payments from the foundation had gone to shell companies. She suspected Vanessa was involved.""

Dad's face tightened.

"Do you have proof?""

Michael handed him a printed report.

"These were the original findings from the investigator.""

I looked through the pages.

There were company names, dates, and financial records.

One name appeared repeatedly.

*Carter Family Holdings LLC.*

Dad shook his head.

"That's my company.""

Michael nodded.

"Vanessa used a similar name to make some transactions look legitimate.""

I felt sick.

"How much money?""

"At least sixty thousand dollars at that time.""

Dad looked at the dates.

"This was before I married her.""

"Yes.""

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then I asked the question that had been bothering me.

"If Vanessa was stealing from my mother, why didn't Mom report her?""

Michael lowered his eyes.

"She was preparing to.""

"What stopped her?""

He looked at me.

"Her diagnosis.""

The café seemed to become unbearably quiet.

My mother had been sick for months.

I remembered the hospital visits, the whispered conversations, and the way adults stopped talking whenever I entered the room.

Michael continued.

"She was afraid that a legal battle would expose you to years of conflict. She wanted to make sure your inheritance was protected first.""

Dad rubbed his forehead.

"And you?""

"I was trying to help her.""

"Then why did you disappear?""

Michael looked down at his coffee.

"Because Vanessa contacted me. She told me Evelyn had changed her mind about the inheritance and wanted nothing more to do with me.""

I stared at him.

"You believed her?""

"I was angry. I thought Evelyn was using me.""

"Did you ever try to contact her directly?""

He hesitated.

"Once.""

"When?""

"The week before she died.""

Dad looked up sharply.

"What?""

Michael swallowed.

"I went to the hospital. Vanessa met me outside.""

My fingers tightened around the photograph.

"What did she say?""

"She told me Evelyn was unconscious and that Richard had forbidden anyone from seeing her.""

Dad stood so quickly that his chair scraped against the floor.

"I never said that!""

Michael nodded.

"I know that now.""

"Did you leave?""

"Yes.""

Dad looked furious.

"You walked away without checking?""

Michael's voice cracked.

"I thought she didn't want to see me.""

I looked between them.

Two men who had both made mistakes.

One had raised me.

The other had disappeared.

And Vanessa had apparently used both of them.

I took a breath.

"Why are you really here now?""

Michael looked at me.

"Because I received a letter from Vanessa eleven months ago.""

He reached into his briefcase.

It was an email printed on white paper.

The message was short.

Emily is turning eighteen soon. The trust will become accessible. If we work together, there is enough money for everyone. I can arrange the necessary documents.

At the bottom was Vanessa's signature.

I felt my stomach turn.

"You agreed?""

Michael nodded slowly.

"At first.""

Dad slammed his hand against the table.

"Unbelievable.""

Michael raised his hands.

"I didn't know she planned to forge Emily's signature. When I discovered the truth, I stopped cooperating.""

"Why didn't you tell us?""

"I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

Michael looked at me.

"That she would reveal something about Evelyn that I wasn't prepared to face.""

I frowned.

"What?""

He opened another folder.

Inside was a document with my mother's signature.

It was a handwritten statement dated two weeks before her death.

I began reading.

I, Evelyn Carter, request that my daughter Emily remain under the care of Richard Carter. I have reason to believe that certain individuals may attempt to interfere with her inheritance and custody arrangements.

Below that was a list of names.

Vanessa Carter.

Jordan Mitchell.

And one more.

Daniel Brooks.

The estate trustee.

I looked up.

"Why is Daniel on this list?""

Michael's expression changed.

"Because your mother discovered that someone had been accessing her confidential files.""

Dad stared at the page.

"Daniel was her attorney.""

"Exactly.""

I looked at the document again.

"Are you saying he was involved?""

Michael nodded.

"I don't know how deeply. But Evelyn was investigating him, too.""

Dad immediately reached for his phone.

Before he could dial, mine vibrated.

A message from Martin.

*Do not contact Daniel Brooks. He has just attempted to withdraw $75,000 from the protected trust.*

I showed Dad.

His face went pale.

Then another message appeared.

May you like

This one came from Daniel himself.

*Emily, I have your mother's original will. If you want to know what she really planned, come to Savannah alone.*
