Chapter 14: The Meeting Where Everything Fell Apart

The Carter Family Foundation occupied the top two floors of an old office building in downtown Atlanta.

My mother had spent years helping families through it.

She had paid medical bills, supported struggling students, and helped parents find temporary housing.

Now Vanessa was trying to take control of the entire organization.

When we arrived, several cars were parked outside.

Dad looked at me.

"Stay close.""

Martin carried the legal documents.

Robert held the original DNA report.

I carried my mother's letter.

We entered the building.

The receptionist looked startled.

"Mr. Carter? The meeting is already in session.""

"Then we'll join it.""

She tried to stop us.

But Dad continued down the hallway.

Through the glass doors, I could see Vanessa standing at the front of the conference room.

Daniel Brooks was beside her.

Jordan sat near the back, wearing a dark suit.

Vanessa was speaking confidently.

"Given Evelyn's declining health during the final months of her life, I believe the board has a responsibility to reconsider the validity of her final instructions.""

One board member raised his hand.

"Do we have medical documentation supporting that claim?""

Daniel opened a folder.

"We have evidence that Evelyn was receiving treatment for a serious illness and was taking medication that may have affected her judgment.""

Vanessa nodded.

"Exactly. We cannot allow an estate to be controlled by a document signed under questionable circumstances.""

Then Dad opened the conference-room door.

"Interesting.""

Every head turned.

Vanessa's face went pale.

"Richard?""

He walked inside.

"Continue. I'd like to hear more about how my wife's illness made her unable to manage her own affairs.""

Daniel immediately stood.

"This meeting is private.""

Martin placed his briefcase on the table.

"Not anymore.""

Vanessa recovered quickly.

"Richard, you have no authority here.""

Dad looked at her.

"Neither do you.""

I stepped forward.

"Actually, I do.""

The room went quiet.

Vanessa stared at me.

"Emily, this is an adult meeting.""

I looked around the table.

"My mother left me the controlling shares of this foundation. I'm eighteen, and I'm here to exercise my rights.""

One of the board members, an older woman named Margaret Lewis, leaned forward.

"Is that true?""

Martin opened the original documents.

"Yes. We have the affidavit of final intent, the trust records, and supporting evidence.""

Daniel laughed nervously.

"Those documents are questionable.""

Martin placed a copy of the will in front of him.

"Then perhaps you'd like to explain why your signature appears on a fraudulent beneficiary-change request.""

Daniel's smile disappeared.

Vanessa quickly intervened.

"That's irrelevant. The real issue is whether Evelyn was mentally competent.""

I took a breath.

"My mother knew exactly what she was doing.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"You were a child. You don't know what happened.""

"Then let's hear from the people who were there.""

Robert stepped forward.

He placed the original DNA report on the table.

Then he explained how my mother had arranged independent testing to prevent anyone from challenging my relationship with Dad.

Margaret examined the document.

"Is this authentic?""

Robert nodded.

"I personally collected the original report from the laboratory. I also witnessed the signing of Evelyn's final affidavit.""

Daniel shifted in his chair.

Then Martin placed another folder on the table.

"These are the financial records showing unauthorized transfers from the foundation and Emily's inheritance.""

The board members began turning pages.

One man frowned.

"These payments were approved by Daniel.""

Daniel shook his head.

"I was following instructions.""

"Whose instructions?""

He looked at Vanessa.

She stared straight ahead.

Martin continued.

"These records also show that money was transferred to companies controlled by Vanessa Carter and Jordan Mitchell.""

Jordan suddenly stood.

"I didn't know any of this was stolen!""

Dad looked at him.

"Then why did you tell me you were investing my daughter's college money?""

Jordan's face reddened.

"I was trying to make a profit.""

"With stolen money?""

Vanessa interrupted.

"This is ridiculous! Richard is angry because I made a mistake with the family finances.""

I took out the photograph of my burning graduation dress.

I had printed it that morning.

I placed it in front of her.

"Was this a financial mistake too?""

She stared at the photograph.

I continued.

"You destroyed my graduation dress because you thought I didn't deserve something beautiful. You stole the money my mother left me. You tried to replace me as the beneficiary of her trust. And now you're telling everyone that she wasn't mentally capable of making decisions.""

My voice shook, but I kept going.

"Why? Because you wanted what belonged to her daughter.""

Nobody spoke.

Then Margaret looked at Vanessa.

"Is there anything you'd like to say in response?""

Vanessa stood.

"Yes. Emily has been manipulated by her father. She's emotional, immature, and incapable of understanding the complexity of this foundation.""

I stared at her.

"Then why are you so afraid of me?""

Her mouth opened.

No words came out.

Martin placed one final document on the table.

It was a recorded authorization from the bank.

"Before this meeting began, the trust administrator confirmed that the attempted withdrawals and beneficiary changes were unauthorized. All remaining assets are now protected.""

Vanessa turned toward Daniel.

He was sweating.

"Tell them!"" she snapped.

Daniel looked at the board.

Then he said something nobody expected.

"I didn't act alone.""

Vanessa froze.

Daniel continued.

"Vanessa instructed me to prepare the transfer documents. She also told me that if the plan failed, I should make it appear that Michael Bennett had submitted the fraudulent claim.""

Michael stepped forward.

"Why?""

Daniel looked toward Vanessa.

"Because she wanted Richard to believe Emily wasn't his biological daughter.""

Dad's face hardened.

Martin immediately recorded Daniel's statement in his notes.

Vanessa shouted.

"You're lying!""

Daniel pulled a small USB drive from his pocket.

"I have the emails.""

He handed it to Martin.

Martin inserted it into his laptop.

The first email contained instructions to transfer the foundation's shares.

The second contained a request to forge my signature.

The third was a message from Vanessa.

Once the money is secured, we can finally get rid of Emily's claim to the estate. Richard will have no choice but to accept the new arrangement.

I read it twice.

Then I noticed the date.

It had been sent just three days after my eighteenth birthday.

Margaret closed the folder.

"I move that Vanessa Carter and Daniel Brooks be removed from all foundation positions immediately, pending a full investigation.""

The motion passed unanimously.

Vanessa stood frozen.

Then she looked directly at me.

"You think this is over?""

Dad moved toward her.

"Leave.""

She picked up her purse.

But before she reached the door, two investigators entered the conference room.

They had been contacted by Martin after the financial evidence was verified.

One approached Daniel.

"Mr. Brooks, we'd like to ask you some questions regarding suspected financial fraud and falsified documents.""

Daniel lowered his head.

The second investigator turned toward Vanessa.

"Mrs. Carter, we'd also like to speak with you.""

Vanessa looked at me.

For the first time, she had no clever response.

As they escorted her into the hallway, she turned around.

"You'll regret this, Emily!""

I looked at her calmly.

"No. I regret believing you were family.""

The doors closed.

The room remained silent.

Then Margaret stood and walked toward me.

"Emily, your mother would have been proud.""

I looked down at the photograph of my burned dress.

"I wish she could have seen it.""

Margaret squeezed my shoulder.

"She did everything she could to make sure you'd have this moment.""

For the first time, I understood what my mother had meant.

She hadn't left me a fortune so I could become wealthy.

She had left me the power to stand on my own.

And the next morning, I was finally going to graduate.

May you like

But there was still one person I needed to speak to.

Kayla.
