Chapter 6: The Man My Mother Never Mentioned

I couldn't move.

For eighteen years, I had believed Richard Carter was my biological father.

He had taught me to ride a bicycle, attended my school performances, and held my hand at my mother's funeral.

Now he was telling me there was another man.

"That's impossible," I whispered.

Dad sat down heavily.

"Emily, I need you to listen.""

"You're not my father?""

He looked at me.

"I've raised you as my daughter since the day you were born. Nothing changes that.""

"That's not what I asked.""

He lowered his head.

For several seconds, the only sound was the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.

Then he nodded.

"Biologically, no.""

I stepped backward.

The room seemed to tilt.

"Who is he?""

"His name is Michael.""

"Michael what?""

"Michael Bennett.""

I had never heard that name before.

Dad rubbed his face.

"Your mother met him before we got married. They were together for a while. She ended the relationship before she and I became serious.""

"Then why didn't she tell me?""

"Because she believed he had moved on.""

I stared at him.

"Did you know before she died?""

"Yes.""

The answer hurt.

"How long?""

"Since before you were born.""

I sat down on the staircase.

"Did Mom love him?""

Dad took a long breath.

"I don't know what she felt when they were together. But she chose to build a life with me. I loved her, and I loved you from the moment I met you.""

"Then why keep it secret?""

He looked toward the letter.

"Because your mother was afraid Michael would come back and challenge everything.""

My hands began shaking.

"What happened before she died?""

Dad looked exhausted.

"Three days before she passed, she received a letter from him. He had discovered she was seriously ill. He wanted to meet you.""

I stared.

"And?""

"Your mother refused.""

"Why?""

Dad swallowed.

"She said he had disappeared when she needed him most. She didn't want him suddenly appearing in your life because he felt guilty.""

I looked at him.

"Did he know I existed?""

"Yes.""

"Then where was he?""

Dad didn't answer.

Instead, he walked into the study and returned with a small brown envelope.

"I found this among your mother's things after she died.""

He handed it to me.

Inside was an old photograph.

A younger version of my mother stood beside a tall man with dark hair.

On the back were two words.

Michael and Evelyn.

I turned the photograph over again.

There was a date.

It was taken less than a year before I was born.

Then I noticed something else.

A second document had been folded behind the photograph.

It was a letter addressed to my mother.

I unfolded it.

Evelyn,

I know you don't want to hear from me. But I need you to understand that I never stopped trying to find you.

If the baby is mine, I want to be part of her life.

Please don't let her grow up believing I abandoned her.

The letter was signed Michael.

I looked up.

"Did you ever respond?""

Dad shook his head.

"Your mother did.""

"What did she say?""

"She told him to stay away.""

I looked back at the letter.

Then I noticed a handwritten note in the margin.

If anything happens to me, Daniel has the original correspondence.

Daniel Brooks.

The estate trustee.

I immediately called Martin.

He answered on the second ring.

"Richard?""

"It's Emily. We need to talk about Michael Bennett.""

There was silence.

Then Martin said something unexpected.

"How do you know that name?""

I looked at Dad.

"Because I found my mother's letter.""

Martin sighed.

"Emily, I was hoping this wouldn't come up tonight.""

"Why?""

"Because Michael Bennett contacted our office last week.""

My stomach dropped.

"What?""

"He asked whether the inheritance arrangements had been finalized. He also requested confirmation that you had turned eighteen.""

Dad stood up.

"Why would he do that?""

Martin answered carefully.

"Because he believes he has a legal claim concerning certain assets in your mother's estate.""

I gripped the phone.

"Does he want my money?""

"I don't know his intentions. But he has retained an attorney.""

Dad's expression darkened.

"Who?""

Martin gave him the name.

It was the same law firm Vanessa had used when she tried to change the trust beneficiary.

I looked at Dad.

Something wasn't right.

"Martin," I said, "did Vanessa know Michael?""

A long silence followed.

Then Martin answered.

"Emily, I think you should know that Michael Bennett and Vanessa Carter have been communicating for several months.""

My father went completely still.

"How long?""

"According to the records we've received, their first documented communication was eleven months ago.""

Eleven months.

Almost exactly when the first withdrawals from my college account began.

Dad took the phone from my hand.

"Martin, what are you saying?""

"I'm saying this may be bigger than financial fraud.""

He paused.

Then he added:

"There's evidence suggesting Vanessa may have helped Michael locate Emily—and arrange a claim against her inheritance.""

I felt sick.

My stepmother hadn't simply stolen my money.

She might have been working with a stranger who wanted access to my mother's estate.

And suddenly, the graduation dress burning in the backyard seemed like the smallest part of what had happened.

Then another message appeared on my phone.

An unknown number.

The message contained a photograph of my mother's grave.

Beneath it were eight words:

*Your mother lied to you about everything. Meet me tomorrow.*

May you like

A second message followed.

*I'm Michael. I'm your real father.*
