Chapter 8: The Debt Behind The Door

“What payment?””

My father asked the question.

Derek looked like he wished he could pull the words back into his mouth.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Derek.””

“What?”” he snapped.

“They're going to find out.””

My father stepped closer.

“Find out what?””

Vanessa remained silent.

Dad’s voice rose.

“What payment?””

Derek laughed bitterly.

“You really don't know anything, do you, Michael?””

Vanessa turned on him.

“Shut up.””

“No. I'm done carrying this.””

“You created this mess!””

“I created it?””

Derek pointed at her.

“You were the one who said the house could cover the bridge loan.””

My father staggered backward.

“Bridge loan?””

I felt Rebecca shift beside me.

Daniel's expression became grim.

“How much?”” Rebecca asked.

Derek didn't answer.

“How much?”” I repeated.

Vanessa looked toward the window.

Derek finally said it.

“Eight hundred thousand.””

Madison gasped.

My father simply stared.

I thought I had misheard.

“Eight hundred thousand dollars?””

“It wasn't supposed to stay outstanding,” Derek said quickly.

“The development financing was supposed to close.””

Rebecca asked, “Did Westbridge lend directly to Lawson Urban Development?””

Derek hesitated.

“That was the arrangement.””

“That wasn't my question.””

His silence answered her.

Rebecca's eyes narrowed.

“Who personally guaranteed it?””

Vanessa turned away.

My father whispered, “No.””

He looked at his wife.

“Vanessa.””

She said nothing.

“You guaranteed your brother's debt?””

“I was trying to help him.””

“With what collateral?””

Her eyes moved toward me.

There it was.

The house.

My mother's house.

My childhood.

My trust.

All because Derek had an investment opportunity.

My father dropped into the chair.

“You told me we were refinancing for two hundred thousand.””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“Because you would have panicked.””

“I should have panicked!””

“I was fixing it!””

“With Charlotte's signature?””

“I did not sign her name.””

Everyone went quiet.

Rebecca spoke carefully.

“Who did?””

Vanessa looked at Derek.

He laughed.

“Oh, don't look at me.””

“You handled the documents.””

“You gave me the sample.””

My stomach dropped.

“What sample?””

Neither answered.

I stepped closer.

“What sample of my signature?””

Vanessa's face betrayed her.

And suddenly I remembered.

Two months earlier.

She had come into the kitchen while I was leaving for work.

“Charlotte, can you sign this delivery authorization? They won't leave the new dining table without an adult signature.””

I hadn't even read it properly.

I had signed.

Because it seemed harmless.

Because she was my stepmother.

Because I lived in her house.

Or what I thought was her house.

“You asked me to sign for furniture.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Madison whispered, “Mom…”

Vanessa snapped, “It was a delivery form.””

Rebecca asked, “Do you still have it?””

“No.””

Derek stared at Vanessa.

“You told me she agreed.””

Vanessa spun toward him.

“You told me it was just for verification!””

Their words collided.

Then stopped.

Because both had said too much.

Rebecca pulled out her phone.

“Daniel, we need copies of every document associated with the refinancing and Westbridge.””

He nodded.

My father looked physically ill.

“I signed papers.””

I turned toward him.

“What papers?””

“I don't know.””

My anger flared.

“You don't know?””

“Vanessa brought them to me. She said they were preliminary.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“They were.””

Derek muttered, “Not all of them.””

She glared at him.

My father stood.

“What did I sign?””

Nobody answered.

He moved toward Vanessa.

Not threatening.

Desperate.

“What did I sign?””

She finally whispered, “A personal guarantee.””

His face collapsed.

“For how much?””

Vanessa looked down.

“The full amount.””

Madison began crying.

Quietly.

Not theatrically.

She sat on my old desk chair and covered her mouth.

I hated seeing it.

Despite everything.

I walked over and handed her a tissue.

She looked up at me.

“Why are you being nice to me?””

The question hurt more than I expected.

“Because this isn't your debt.””

She wiped her face.

“I treated you like garbage.””

“Yes.””

She almost laughed through her tears.

I continued.

“That doesn't mean I want your life destroyed.””

Across the room, Vanessa watched us.

Something unreadable crossed her face.

Then Rebecca's phone rang.

She stepped into the hallway.

We heard only pieces.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Send everything.””

A pause.

“Immediately.””

She returned.

Her expression told me the situation had changed again.

“What?”” I asked.

“Westbridge filed a notice this morning.””

My father gripped the chair.

“Against the house?””

“They're claiming an interest based on documents provided with the bridge financing.””

Daniel shook his head.

“They can't enforce against trust ownership without authorization.””

“They can try.””

Rebecca looked at me.

“And someone gave them documents suggesting Charlotte authorized it.””

My stomach turned.

“So now what?””

“We challenge everything.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“You can't.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because if Westbridge realizes the collateral isn't valid, they'll go directly after Derek.””

Derek stared at her.

“Vanessa.””

She ignored him.

“And Michael.””

Dad went pale.

I understood.

She hadn't only gambled with my inheritance.

She had trapped my father too.

“You knew this could happen.””

Vanessa's voice cracked.

“I thought the project would close.””

“You knew.””

“I was trying to keep everyone safe.””

“No. You were trying to keep everyone quiet.””

She looked at me.

For the first time, Vanessa seemed smaller.

Not harmless.

Just exposed.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Rebecca said, “Don't answer.””

But something made me look at the screen.

A voicemail arrived.

I played it on speaker.

A man's voice filled the room.

“Ms. Bennett, this is Thomas Vale from Westbridge Capital. We need to speak urgently regarding a personal authorization bearing your signature.””

A pause.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“We also have a recorded meeting in which a woman identifying herself as Charlotte Bennett approved the transaction.””

Nobody moved.

I looked slowly at Vanessa.

She stared back at me.

May you like

And Madison whispered:

“Mom… who pretended to be Charlotte?””
