Chapter 12: My Mother’s Hidden Family
Nobody spoke.
The name stayed in the air.
Eleanor’s sister.
My mother had never told me she had a sister.
Not once.
I looked at my father.
“Who is she?””
He sat down slowly.
“Her name is Claire.””
“Why don’t I know her?””
He looked ashamed.
“Because your mother cut contact with her.””
“Why?””
He hesitated.
Rebecca noticed.
“Michael.””
He sighed.
“Claire had problems with money.””
That was vague.
Too vague.
“What kind of problems?””
My father rubbed his forehead.
“Your mother inherited money from your grandparents. Claire believed she deserved half.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Your grandfather mentioned a family dispute.””
I looked at the photo again.
Claire.
The woman helping someone steal my estate.
My mother’s own sister.
“She knew about the trust.””
“Yes,” my father said.
“How?””
“Because your mother told her once.””
I closed my eyes.
Another person.
Another secret.
Another betrayal connected to what my mother left behind.
Rebecca asked, “When did Claire reconnect with Vanessa?””
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
Everyone turned toward her.
“What?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I met Claire two years ago.””
My father stood.
“You what?””
She looked at him.
“She contacted me.””
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because she knew about Charlotte.””
My chest tightened.
“She knew about me?””
“Yes.””
“And you kept this secret?””
Vanessa’s eyes dropped.
“I didn't think it mattered.””
I laughed softly.
“Nothing ever matters until someone gets caught.””
She accepted that.
Because it was true.
Rebecca looked at Vanessa.
“Tell us everything.””
Vanessa sat down.
“I was at a charity event. Claire approached me. She knew I was married to Michael.””
“What did she want?””
“At first? Information.””
“What information?””
“About the house. About Charlotte. About the trust.””
My father looked disgusted.
“And you gave it to her?””
Vanessa whispered, “Some.””
“Why?””
She looked at him.
“Because I was angry.””
The honesty was painful.
“At Charlotte?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because you never accepted me.””
I stared.
“You mean I didn’t pretend you were my mother.””
Her face tightened.
“No.””
“I was eight.””
“I know.””
“No, you don't.””
My voice became sharper.
“You entered my life after I lost the most important person in it. I wasn't supposed to immediately call you Mom.””
Vanessa looked away.
“I know that now.””
“Too late.””
Silence.
Then Rebecca asked:
“What did Claire promise you?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
That was all we needed.
“What did she promise?””
“She said the trust had weaknesses.””
Daniel frowned.
“Weaknesses?””
“She said if Charlotte abandoned the house, if she was no longer considered connected to the property, the trust could be challenged.””
My heart sank.
“She lied.””
“Yes.””
“But you believed her.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
Rebecca looked at the documents.
“That explains the timeline.””
“What timeline?””
“She contacted Vanessa. Vanessa pressured Charlotte to leave. Derek arranged financing. Nicole created the fake verification.””
I looked at the photo.
“And Claire?””
Rebecca answered:
“Claire was waiting for the sale.””
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked at it.
I answered.
A woman’s voice came through.
“Charlotte?””
My body went cold.
I knew immediately.
I had never heard her before.
But something about the confidence in her voice felt familiar.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“I’m your aunt.””
Nobody spoke.
I put the call on speaker.
Claire continued.
“I know you have questions.””
I looked at Rebecca.
She nodded.
“Why did you help them?””
A quiet laugh.
“Because your mother made sure I got nothing.””
“That’s your reason?””
“She chose you.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“She chose her daughter.””
“No.””
Claire’s voice sharpened.
“She chose a child over her own sister.””
My father closed his eyes.
“Claire…”
She ignored him.
“Your mother always thought she knew better. She hid everything away and left you controlling assets you don’t even understand.””
I answered calmly.
“Then why not talk to me?””
Silence.
For the first time, she hesitated.
“Because you would have said no.””
The honesty was chilling.
Rebecca motioned for me to keep her talking.
I asked:
“What do you want now?””
Claire’s voice lowered.
“What I always wanted.””
“And what is that?””
A pause.
Then she said:
“Your mother’s legacy.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Rebecca immediately checked the recording.
“We have enough for now.””
But Daniel looked worried.
“Charlotte.””
“What?””
He pointed toward the original trust papers.
“There’s one thing Claire said that bothers me.””
“What?””
“She said your mother left you assets you don’t understand.””
I looked at him.
“And?””
Daniel slowly turned the page.
“There’s a sealed section in the trust documents.””
My heart sank.
“Why haven't I seen it?””
“Because it was scheduled to open when a specific condition occurred.””
Rebecca leaned closer.
“What condition?””
Daniel looked at the date.
Then at me.
“Someone attempting to take control of your inheritance.””
The room went silent.
Because that condition had just happened.
Daniel opened the sealed section.
Inside was one sentence written in my mother’s handwriting.
If someone is trying to steal what belongs to Charlotte, it means they have already found the thing I was protecting her from.
I stared at the words.
Then Daniel read the final line aloud.
“The true value of the inheritance was never the property.””
May you like
He looked at me.
“It was the evidence.””
