Chapter 11: The Person Behind The Mask
I stared at the document.
Vanessa Bennett.
My stepmother’s name.
For several seconds, my mind refused to process it.
“No.””
Rebecca looked at me.
“I know.””
“No, that doesn't make sense.””
Daniel sighed.
“It does.””
I looked at him.
“Explain.””
He opened the file.
“Lawson Urban Development was arranging the purchase, but the beneficial buyer was listed through a private investment structure connected to Vanessa.””
I felt sick.
“She was buying my estate?””
“Technically, yes.””
I looked back toward the house.
Vanessa was still standing outside.
Watching us.
She knew.
She knew we had found it.
I walked back.
Rebecca followed.
Vanessa’s face was pale.
“Charlotte…”
“Why?””
She looked down.
“I can explain.””
“That sentence should be illegal.””
She closed her eyes.
“I didn't start this.””
“No.””
I held up the document.
“But you joined it.””
Her eyes filled.
“I was scared.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You were scared?””
“Yes.””
“Enough to pretend to be my mother?””
She flinched.
“I never did that.””
“Enough to use my identity?””
“I didn’t know Derek would go that far.””
“But you knew enough.””
Silence.
That was the answer.
My father stepped outside behind her.
He looked at the document.
Then at Vanessa.
“You were buying her estate?””
Vanessa whispered, “Michael.””
“No.””
His voice shook.
“No, answer me.””
She looked away.
And that broke something in him.
“You were going to take the one thing Eleanor left our daughter?””
Vanessa snapped.
“Don’t make this about Eleanor!””
The moment she said it, everyone went silent.
Because there it was.
The thing beneath everything.
Not money.
Not debt.
Resentment.
“You hated my mother.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“I barely knew her.””
“But you hated that she was still here.””
She didn't answer.
I continued.
“You hated that every room in this house reminded Dad of her.””
“Charlotte.””
“No.””
My voice stayed calm.
“You did.””
Vanessa looked at my father.
“I loved you.””
He looked devastated.
“But you never let me forget I was second.””
Her face hardened.
“And Eleanor was perfect?””
“No.””
My father shook his head.
“She was human.””
That answer surprised everyone.
“She made mistakes. We fought. We struggled.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“But she never tried to erase my daughter.””
Vanessa looked away.
For once, she had nothing.
Rebecca interrupted.
“Charlotte, there’s something else.””
I turned.
“What?””
She handed me another document.
“This was attached to the purchase agreement.””
I read the first line.
TRANSFER CONDITION.
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What is this?””
Daniel answered.
“Your estate had a protection clause.””
I kept reading.
The property cannot be transferred unless the beneficiary voluntarily agrees or loses controlling interest through legal action.
I looked up.
“So they needed me to sign.””
“Yes.””
“And if I refused?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“They needed you out of the way.””
Everything suddenly became clear.
The bedroom.
The deadline.
The pressure.
They weren't trying to remove me because Madison wanted space.
They were trying to create a story.
A daughter who abandoned the family home.
A daughter who willingly left.
A daughter who no longer cared about the property.
My throat tightened.
“You wanted me to leave voluntarily.””
Vanessa whispered, “Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
She covered her face.
“I thought if you were gone, everything would be easier.””
“For who?””
She didn't answer.
“For you?””
“Yes.””
The word was barely audible.
I looked at my father.
He looked like a stranger.
“You married someone who wanted my mother’s legacy.””
He swallowed.
“I know.””
I turned back to Vanessa.
“Why the bedroom?””
She looked confused.
“What?””
“Why not just ask me to leave?””
She looked down.
“Because I knew you wouldn't.””
That was the most honest thing she had said.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“You knew I loved this house.””
“Yes.””
“And you still did it.””
Her eyes filled.
“I thought you would understand later.””
I stared at her.
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“I think I understand now.””
My phone rang.
Rebecca checked the screen.
“It's the investigator.””
She answered.
A few seconds passed.
Then her expression changed.
“Are you sure?””
She listened.
“Send it.””
She ended the call.
“What happened?””
She looked at me.
“We found the person who helped create the fake video.””
“Nicole?””
Rebecca nodded.
“But that's not the biggest problem.””
“What is?””
She turned the phone around.
A photograph appeared.
It showed Nicole leaving an office building.
Beside her was someone else.
Someone I recognized.
My father looked at the picture.
His face drained of color.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Dad?””
He whispered:
“That’s not possible.””
Rebecca asked:
“Who is she?””
My father didn't answer.
Because he already knew.
May you like
Then he said a name I had never heard before.
“Eleanor’s sister.””
