Chapter 4: The Signature That Destroyed Everything
“Mom said you'd understand.””
Chloe's words hung over the kitchen like smoke.
My father stared at her, the property purchase agreement trembling between his fingers.
“Understand what?”” he asked.
Chloe wiped her cheeks with the backs of her hands.
“She said Ethan had more money than he needed. She said Grandpa wanted the family to benefit from it.””
Ethan stood so still that I could hear his uneven breathing.
“I'm the family, Chloe. I'm his grandson.””
“I know.””
“Then why did you sign your name?””
Chloe looked at Linda.
That was her mistake.
For the first time, my father saw his wife's influence in the way Chloe moved, the way she waited for permission before answering, and the way her eyes searched Linda's face for instructions.
“Look at me,” Dad ordered.
Chloe slowly turned toward him.
“Did you know that money belonged to Ethan?””
“Yes.””
“Did you know your mother was taking it?””
Her lips quivered.
“Yes.””
My father closed his eyes.
I had seen him angry before. I'd seen him furious enough to punch a hole in the garage wall after losing his job years earlier. But this was different. His anger had nowhere to go because every direction he turned revealed another betrayal.
Linda seized the opportunity to speak.
“Robert, please. You need to understand the circumstances.””
He opened his eyes.
“What circumstances justify stealing from a nineteen-year-old boy?””
“I was trying to secure a future for my daughters!””
“You bought a vacation house in Florida!””
“It was an investment!””
“With his inheritance?””
“The property will appreciate in value!””
Ethan let out a hollow laugh.
“You know what I appreciate, Linda? Being able to afford groceries without wondering whether I'll have to sleep in my car next week.””
Linda's jaw tightened.
“You're being dramatic.””
“No,” I said.
“He's being remarkably calm considering you tried to get him arrested.””
Linda pointed a finger at me.
“Stay out of this.””
I stepped beside Ethan.
“You keep saying that because you think the truth belongs to whoever talks the loudest.””
My father placed the agreement on the counter.
“Chloe, did you sign this document willingly?””
Chloe shook her head, then stopped.
“I didn't know what it was at first.””
“That's not what I asked.””
She looked down.
“Yes. I signed it.””
“Why?””
“Mom said it was just paperwork for the house.””
“And you didn't read it?””
“She told me it was fine!””
Linda grabbed Chloe's wrist.
“Stop talking.””
Chloe jerked away.
“No! You told me nobody would find out!””
The room fell silent.
Linda's face hardened into something I had never seen before.
“You ungrateful little girl.””
Chloe recoiled.
“You promised everything would be okay!””
“I promised to take care of you. I didn't promise to protect you from the consequences of your own stupidity.””
Chloe stared at her mother as if she'd just discovered a stranger wearing her face.
Ethan picked up the agreement again.
“So you used my money to buy a house, put Chloe's name on the paperwork, and then tried to throw me out before I could discover what happened.””
Linda lifted her chin.
“I did what I had to do.””
“Why frame me?”” I asked.
Her eyes met mine.
“Because your father was finally beginning to ask questions.””
Dad looked up sharply.
“What questions?””
Linda's lips parted, but nothing came out.
I remembered the strange phone calls she'd been taking in the garage. The late-night arguments that stopped whenever someone entered the kitchen. The way she'd recently begun insisting that Ethan was irresponsible and couldn't be trusted with money.
It hadn't been random.
She had been preparing Dad to distrust his own son.
“You were afraid he'd discover the missing money,” I said.
Linda didn't answer.
My father reached for his phone.
“I'm calling the attorney.””
She moved toward him.
“Robert, don't do this.””
He stepped away.
“I'm calling the attorney, and then I'm calling the police.””
“You'll destroy this family!””
“No, Linda. You did that.””
She stared at him for several seconds before her expression changed. Her tears disappeared. Her shoulders straightened, and the frightened wife vanished.
“You think you're innocent?”” she asked quietly.
Dad frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
“You signed the papers, Robert.””
He went pale.
“What papers?””
“The ones allowing me to manage the trust.””
“You told me those were routine guardianship documents!””
“And you signed them without reading them.””
Ethan looked at his father.
“Dad?””
My father opened his mouth, but Linda continued.
“You trusted me because you wanted someone else to handle the unpleasant details. You never checked a single statement. You never asked where the money went.””
Her voice grew stronger with every sentence.
“You wanted to believe I was taking care of everything. So don't stand there pretending this happened without your permission.””
Dad gripped the counter.
“Did you forge anything?””
“No.””
“Did you lie to me?””
Linda smiled bitterly.
“Every day you let me.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Lily, who had remained beside the doorway with her phone, quietly asked, “If you were only trying to protect the money, why did you tell Chloe to frame Ethan?””
Linda's expression flickered.
She looked at the phone.
Then at the envelope.
Finally, she turned toward my father.
“Because the money isn't the only thing your son inherited.””
Ethan frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Linda hesitated.
For the first time, I saw genuine uncertainty cross her face.
She hadn't planned for this conversation to happen. She hadn't planned for Lily's camera, the recording, or the discovery of the Florida property.
But whatever she was hiding now, it frightened her more than the stolen money.
My father stepped closer.
“What else did my father leave Ethan?””
Linda swallowed.
Then she said, “Ask your son why James visited him in the hospital the night before he died.””
Ethan went rigid.
I turned toward him.
“Ethan? What is she talking about?””
May you like
He stared at Linda, his face drained of color.
Then he whispered, “Grandpa made me promise never to tell anyone.””
