Chapter 1: The Day My Father Chose the Wrong Daughter
The first thing my father did after my stepsister accused my brother of attacking her was throw him out of our house.
The second thing he did was threaten to call the police on his own son.
And the third thing—the thing I would never forgive him for—was refuse to watch the video that could have saved Ethan from losing everything.
I remember that Saturday afternoon in Ohio as if it were happening in front of me again. Rain tapped against the kitchen windows. The smell of my father's burnt coffee drifted through the hallway. Somewhere upstairs, Lily's favorite pop song played faintly through her bedroom door.
Then Chloe screamed.
It wasn't an ordinary scream. It was sharp, desperate, and loud enough to make me drop the laundry basket I was carrying.
I ran downstairs.
Chloe stood in the living room beside a shattered brass lamp. One hand clutched the collar of her torn blouse, and the other pointed accusingly at my older brother, Ethan.
"He attacked me!"" she shrieked.
Ethan stood near the front door in his blue work uniform, his car keys still dangling from his fingers. His face was pale with confusion.
"What?"" he demanded.
"Chloe, I literally just walked in!""
My stepmother, Linda, rushed to Chloe and wrapped her in her arms.
"Oh, sweetheart. Oh, my God. Are you hurt?""
Chloe buried her face against Linda's shoulder.
"He grabbed me. I told him to stop, but he wouldn't listen.""
"That's a lie!"" Ethan said.
"I haven't even been in this room for five minutes!""
I looked from the broken lamp to Chloe's torn shirt. Something about the scene felt wrong, but before I could put my finger on it, my father appeared in the hallway.
"What is going on here?""
Linda turned toward him with tears already running down her cheeks.
"Your son attacked Chloe.""
My father's expression changed instantly.
He had always been a proud, stubborn man, but I had never seen his face harden so quickly against one of his own children.
"Ethan," he said quietly.
"Tell me she isn't telling the truth.""
"Dad, she is lying!""
"Don't you dare call her a liar!""
"I'm telling you what happened!""
My father crossed the room and grabbed Ethan by the shoulder.
"Get out of my house.""
I stared at him.
"Dad, what are you doing?""
"You heard me.""
Ethan stumbled backward as my father shoved him toward the door.
"I work ten hours a day to help pay the bills in this house!"" Ethan shouted.
"I've never laid a hand on her!""
"Then you should have thought about that before you attacked her!""
"Dad, please," I begged.
"Just listen to him.""
Linda stepped between us, her eyes narrowing.
"Emily, this is a family matter. Stay out of it.""
"He's my brother!""
"And Chloe is my daughter!""
The words struck harder than they should have.
Since our parents' remarriage, Linda had made it clear that her children came first. Chloe received expensive clothes, new electronics, and whatever money she requested. Ethan and I were expected to be grateful for whatever remained.
But I had never imagined she would use that favoritism to destroy him.
Chloe lifted her face from Linda's shoulder.
For a fraction of a second, our eyes met.
Her tears were gone.
In their place was a tiny, satisfied smile.
Then she began sobbing again.
"He said nobody would believe me," she whispered.
My father looked ready to explode.
"That's enough. Ethan, you have five minutes to pack your things.""
Ethan's hands began trembling.
"You're kicking me out over something I didn't do?""
"I'm protecting this family.""
"From me?"" Ethan's voice cracked.
"Dad, I'm your son.""
My father opened the front door.
Cold air rushed into the house.
"Five minutes.""
I grabbed Ethan's arm as tears blurred my vision.
"Please don't go. We can prove she is lying.""
He looked at me with the helpless expression of someone watching his entire life collapse in front of him.
"How, Emily? Nobody will even let me speak.""
Linda took out her phone.
"Perhaps I should call the police now. They can explain to him what happens to men who hurt women.""
Ethan recoiled as though she had slapped him.
"You're trying to ruin my life.""
Linda's lips tightened.
"Only people with something to hide are afraid of consequences.""
I wanted to scream at her. I wanted to grab the phone from her hands and expose the cruelty hiding behind her concerned-mother expression.
But before I could move, a voice came from the staircase.
"Actually, Linda, you should be the one who's afraid.""
Everyone turned.
My sixteen-year-old sister, Lily, stood halfway down the stairs, holding her phone in both hands.
Her face was pale, but her eyes were steady.
My father frowned.
"Lily, go to your room.""
"No.""
"Excuse me?""
"I said no."" She swallowed hard.
"You need to see something before you throw Ethan away like he means nothing.""
Linda's expression shifted.
"Lily, this is not the time for your little games.""
"It's not a game.""
Lily descended the remaining steps.
"I installed a small camera in the living room last week. Someone kept taking money from my backpack, and I wanted to find out who.""
Chloe stopped crying.
"What camera?"" she asked.
Lily looked directly at her.
"The one on the bookshelf.""
For the first time that afternoon, Chloe looked genuinely frightened.
Lily tapped her screen.
"Everybody needs to watch this.""
And when the video began playing, my father took one step toward the television.
May you like
Then another.
Because the girl he had just called a victim was about to expose the biggest lie our family had ever told.
