Chapter 14: The Man Who Controlled the Family

His name was Victor Hale.

For nearly thirty years, Victor had been my grandfather's business partner, financial adviser, and closest friend. He attended family birthdays, brought expensive presents at Christmas, and once helped Ethan rebuild his first car after the engine failed.

He had even delivered the eulogy at Grandpa's funeral.

I remembered him standing beside the coffin, telling everyone that James Mitchell had been an honorable man who always protected his family.

Now Ethan was telling us that Victor's voice had interrupted Linda's confession.

The police issued an alert before we left the station.

Within an hour, they discovered that Victor had sold his Ohio home six months earlier and transferred most of his remaining assets into accounts overseas.

He had vanished.

But the investigation had finally given us something more useful than accusations.

A motive.

Grandpa's original will contained provisions protecting Ethan's inheritance from outside interference. The financial records showed that money had been diverted through shell companies connected to Victor's business interests.

And Mom had discovered the transfers before she died.

Victor hadn't merely wanted the inheritance.

He had wanted to conceal a much larger financial scheme.

At the station, Daniel spread the documents across a conference table.

"James and Victor built several companies together," he explained.

"Victor handled investments while your grandfather focused on the businesses themselves. Over time, Victor gained access to accounts that weren't supposed to be under his control.""

My father stared at the bank statements.

"Why would he target Ethan?""

"Because James had made Ethan the beneficiary of the protected trust. Once Ethan turned twenty-one, Victor would lose access to the remaining assets and face an audit.""

Ethan shook his head.

"So Linda stole the money for herself, but Victor needed the trust emptied to protect his own fraud.""

"That's what the evidence suggests," Daniel replied.

I thought about Chloe's confession.

Linda had told her that Ethan's inheritance would destroy their family. Perhaps that had been true, in a way. Not because the money belonged to them, but because returning it would expose everyone who had benefited from the theft.

The police contacted Harlan, who agreed to provide additional records in exchange for cooperating with the investigation. He admitted that Victor had pressured him to accept altered documents and conceal the missing funds.

He also revealed something we hadn't expected.

Victor had maintained a private office inside an old warehouse near the Scioto River.

The police obtained a warrant.

We weren't allowed inside during the search, but we waited at the perimeter as officers carried boxes of documents into their vehicles.

At 6:20 p.m., an officer approached Dad.

"We found a storage cabinet containing records linked to the original accident investigation.""

Dad went rigid.

"What records?""

"Photographs, correspondence, and a copy of Sarah Mitchell's hospital intake report.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"Was her statement included?""

The officer nodded.

"Yes.""

My father's hands began to shake.

"Can we see it?""

The officer hesitated.

"We've documented it, but I can tell you what it says.""

He opened his notebook.

"According to the statement, Sarah identified a dark sedan that had followed her for several miles. She told the admitting nurse that the driver was Victor Hale.""

Dad closed his eyes.

The officer continued.

"She also said the driver had been trying to force her off the road.""

Ethan gripped the back of a chair.

"Did she survive long enough to speak to the police?""

"Apparently, yes. An officer interviewed her briefly at the hospital. The original report was never filed with the final case documents.""

"Who removed it?"" I asked.

"We're still investigating. But the document bears Victor Hale's initials beside a notation stating that the witness statement was deemed unreliable.""

Daniel looked sick.

"Victor wasn't a police officer.""

"No," the officer replied.

"But he was listed as an authorized representative for the insurance investigation.""

My father stared at him.

"How could he have that kind of authority?""

"That's what we need to establish.""

For a long time, Dad didn't speak.

Then he whispered, "Sarah was trying to protect us.""

Ethan looked at him.

"She was trying to protect us from people you trusted.""

Dad nodded, tears gathering in his eyes.

"I know.""

The officer handed him a photocopy of the hospital statement.

Dad read the first few lines, then stopped.

His face changed.

"What is it?"" I asked.

He pointed to the bottom of the page.

There was a handwritten addition beneath the nurse's notes.

Patient requests that husband be told she has evidence concerning unauthorized transfers from James Mitchell's accounts. Patient believes the person responsible is acting with assistance from someone inside the family.

Dad read the sentence again.

"She was trying to warn me.""

Daniel placed a hand on his shoulder.

"She was.""

"And I never knew.""

"No," Daniel said softly.

"You didn't.""

For years, Dad had told us that Mom's death was an unavoidable tragedy. He hadn't known that she had tried to identify the person who followed her car. He hadn't known that her statement had been removed from the official report.

But he had trusted Linda with her belongings.

He had trusted Harlan with the estate documents.

And he had trusted Victor with the family finances.

Every one of those decisions had given someone else the opportunity to bury the truth.

That evening, Chloe arrived at the station with her attorney.

She had agreed to provide a formal statement about Linda's plan to frame Ethan and the Florida property purchase.

Before the interview, she approached her stepbrother.

"Ethan?""

He turned.

She held out a small envelope.

"I found this inside Mom's laptop bag.""

Ethan didn't take it.

"What is it?""

"A copy of the original property agreement. And a letter she wrote to Victor.""

He accepted the envelope cautiously.

Inside was a single page addressed to Victor Hale.

The money is nearly gone. Robert is asking questions, and the children have found the recordings. I need you to help me get out before they discover what happened to Sarah.

At the bottom, Linda had written another sentence.

You promised me she would never be able to tell anyone what she knew.

Ethan stared at the page.

"She knew Mom was going to be silenced.""

Chloe began crying.

"I swear I didn't know about any of this.""

He looked at her for a long moment.

Then he said, "You knew enough to help her hurt me.""

Chloe nodded, unable to speak.

Ethan returned the letter to its envelope.

"I hope you tell the truth now.""

She wiped her cheeks.

"I will.""

Later that night, the police confirmed that Victor's private office contained enough evidence to support charges related to financial fraud and the concealment of evidence.

But he still hadn't been found.

Then, at 11:07 p.m., Daniel received a call from an unknown number.

He answered and listened without speaking.

When he hung up, he looked at Dad.

"Victor wants to meet.""

"Where?""

"At the cemetery where James is buried.""

The police immediately began arranging surveillance.

But Victor had one condition.

May you like

He would only meet if Ethan came alone.

And he had promised to bring the final piece of evidence proving what happened to Sarah.
