Chapter 7: The Note Sarah Knew We Would Need

The note was still inside Sarah's jewelry box when I returned home that evening.

I found it beneath the velvet tray, folded twice and tucked into a narrow compartment I had never noticed before. My wife's handwriting covered the front.

For Michael. Only open this if Patricia Hale cannot be found.

I stood in the garage for nearly a minute, listening to the rain tapping against the metal door.

Sarah had anticipated this.

She had known Patricia might disappear. She had known someone might try to silence the woman who witnessed the trust documents.

And somehow, she had known I would need this note.

I unfolded it carefully.

Michael, if Patricia is missing, do not assume she has betrayed us. She may be frightened. She may have been threatened. Please find the original blue folder before confronting anyone.

The folder contains the evidence I could not safely keep at the hospital.

Rebecca knows where I last saw it.

Beneath the message was a final sentence.

If Vanessa has already found it, protect Lily before you do anything else.

I immediately called Rebecca.

She answered while I was still reading.

"Michael? Did you find something?""

"Sarah left a note about a blue folder. She said you know where she last saw it.""

Rebecca went quiet.

Then I heard her take a shaky breath.

"The hospital chapel.""

"What?""

"Sarah asked me to meet her there the afternoon before the recording. She was too weak to walk far, so a nurse brought her down in a wheelchair. She had a blue folder with her.""

"What happened to it?""

"I don't know. She said she needed to keep it somewhere Vanessa couldn't find it. Afterward, she asked me to leave.""

I glanced at the note.

"Did she say where she put it?""

"No. But she made me promise something strange. She said if she ever died before Lily's ninth birthday, I should look beneath the third pew from the back.""

I closed my eyes.

"Why didn't you tell me this yesterday?""

"Because I thought she meant the letter. I didn't know about the folder.""

I checked the time.

The chapel was inside the hospital where Sarah had spent her final weeks. It would take twenty minutes to get there.

I called Daniel and told him what we had found.

"Don't search alone," he warned.

"I'll meet you there. And don't remove anything without documenting it.""

"I understand.""

Before leaving, I checked on Lily.

She was sitting on her bed, coloring a picture of a butterfly. Her school counselor had helped arrange for her to stay with me under the agreed safety plan while the concerns were assessed.

"Where are you going, Daddy?""

"To find something Mommy left behind.""

Her crayon stopped moving.

"Is it the letter?""

"Something else.""

She looked toward the hallway.

"Will Vanessa come back?""

I sat beside her.

"I don't know what Vanessa will do, sweetheart. But I have people helping us make sure you're safe.""

Lily studied my face.

"Can I lock my bedroom door tonight?""

The question hurt more than anything else she had said.

"Yes. And I'll be right across the hall.""

She nodded, then reached into her bedside drawer.

"I want you to have this.""

She handed me Sarah's silver pendant.

"I think Mommy would want you to keep it while you're looking for her things.""

I kissed the top of her head.

"I'll bring everything home that I can.""

At the hospital, Daniel was waiting beside the chapel entrance. The room smelled faintly of polish and old wood. A small electric candle glowed beside a vase of artificial lilies.

I walked toward the back pews.

The third one had a loose wooden panel underneath the seat.

Daniel crouched beside me and examined it.

"Someone has opened this before.""

My heart started racing.

He carefully lifted the panel.

Inside was an empty space, barely large enough to hold a folder.

But tucked into the corner was a small brass key and a torn strip of blue paper.

I picked up the paper.

Sarah had written two words on it.

Room 214.

Daniel looked at me.

"Was Sarah ever in that room?""

I searched my memory.

Room 214 had been used by the hospital's medical records department during Sarah's final admission. I remembered walking past it while searching for a nurse.

We found the room at the end of a restricted corridor. It was now used for archived paperwork, and a staff member accompanied us inside after Daniel explained the situation.

Rows of locked cabinets lined the walls.

I held up the brass key.

A small cabinet near the window had a matching lock.

Inside was a blue folder.

My knees nearly gave way.

Daniel photographed the folder before opening it.

The first pages contained copies of Sarah's trust documents. The next contained correspondence about changes to her estate.

Then we found a handwritten statement dated October 15.

I have not authorized Vanessa Carter to access Lily's trust or change its beneficiary.

Any document suggesting otherwise is false.

Sarah had signed it in front of two witnesses.

One was a hospital social worker.

The other was Patricia Hale.

Daniel examined the signatures carefully.

"This could be important," he said.

"We'll need the originals authenticated, but it directly contradicts the documents Vanessa submitted.""

I turned the page.

A photograph had been clipped to the back.

It showed Vanessa standing in a hospital corridor beside a man I didn't recognize. She was holding a folder.

On the back, Sarah had written:

October 14. Vanessa meeting the person who prepared the false amendment.

My hands went cold.

"Who is that man?""

Daniel studied the photograph.

"I don't know.""

Then he noticed something in the man's hand.

A hospital identification badge.

He enlarged the image on his phone.

The name was partly obscured, but the surname was readable.

Hale.

Daniel stared at it.

"Michael, Patricia may have a brother.""

Before I could answer, his phone rang.

The caller was an investigator handling the missing witness report.

Daniel listened, then switched on the speaker.

"We found a vehicle registered to Patricia's brother," the investigator said.

"It's parked outside a storage facility near Marietta.""

"Is Patricia there?"" Daniel asked.

"We don't know yet. But the vehicle was seen leaving her apartment shortly after midnight.""

I looked at the photograph again.

The man beside Vanessa had been wearing a hospital badge.

And Sarah had deliberately kept his image with the evidence.

The investigator continued.

"There's another detail. The storage facility is rented under a company name associated with Vanessa Carter.""

Daniel's face hardened.

I stared at the blue folder.

Sarah had known Vanessa was involved.

But why had she photographed a meeting instead of simply reporting it?

And what had happened in the hospital chapel after Rebecca left?

As we prepared to leave, a nurse approached Daniel with a sealed envelope.

"This was found inside the folder," she said.

"It appears to have been attached to the back cover.""

My name was written across the front.

I opened it.

Inside was a single photograph of Sarah in her hospital bed, holding Lily's hand.

On the reverse, she had written a sentence that made my heart stop.

May you like

Michael, the man in the photograph is not Vanessa's accomplice.

He's the person who warned me about her.
