Chapter 5: The Missing Page From the Hospital

I arrived at Daniel Brooks's office at eight the next morning with Sarah's letters inside a brown folder.

I hadn't slept.

Every time I closed my eyes, I heard Lily asking whether her mother would have wanted her to be sad. Then I remembered Sarah's final weeks, the medication schedules, the exhausted nurses, and Vanessa's insistence that I rest whenever she visited the hospital.

At the time, I had believed Vanessa was helping.

Now every memory felt like a door hiding something behind it.

Daniel stood when I entered.

He looked older than I remembered, his silver hair untidy and his usual confident smile absent.

"Michael, sit down.""

I placed the folder on his desk.

"Tell me everything.""

He locked the office door.

"First, I want you to understand something. I cannot tell you that Vanessa caused Sarah's death. We don't have evidence to establish that. But I can tell you that Sarah believed someone had interfered with her medical care, and she was frightened enough to document her concerns.""

I stared at him.

"Why didn't she tell me?""

"She tried.""

The words struck harder than any accusation.

Daniel opened a drawer and removed a sealed envelope.

"Three weeks before her death, Sarah asked me to prepare an additional statement for her estate file. She said she had discovered irregularities involving the trust and feared Vanessa might try to gain access.""

"What irregularities?""

"An attempt to change the designated trustee. The paperwork appeared to contain Sarah's signature, but she denied signing it.""

I remembered the forged withdrawal request.

"Was Vanessa involved?""

"Her name appeared in the correspondence. However, Sarah never gave me proof that Vanessa personally forged anything.""

I paced toward the window.

"Then what does this have to do with her medical records?""

Daniel took a breath.

"On October 14, Sarah called me from the hospital. She said Vanessa had visited her alone and asked about the trust. According to Sarah, Vanessa claimed she was only trying to help the family prepare for the future.""

"And Sarah didn't trust her?""

"Not anymore.""

I sat down.

"Did Vanessa visit Sarah that night?""

"Hospital visitor logs indicate she did.""

"What happened afterward?""

Daniel slid a photocopy across the desk.

It was an excerpt from Sarah's medical chart.

The printed notes described a medication adjustment during an overnight period when Sarah's condition had deteriorated.

Beside the entry was a notation indicating that the change had been authorized by a physician.

But beneath it, someone had written a handwritten note.

Family member requested immediate clarification regarding dosage.

The name was missing.

"Who wrote this?"" I asked.

"We don't know. The original page is missing from the hospital's archived file. The hospital has begun reviewing the records because the discrepancy was discovered during an unrelated audit.""

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

"Are you saying someone changed Sarah's medication?""

"I'm saying we need a qualified medical review before drawing conclusions. The note is unusual, but it does not prove wrongdoing.""

I looked up.

"Who visited her the night before she was hospitalized?""

Daniel opened another folder.

"There were three visitors listed that week. You, Vanessa, and Sarah's older sister, Rebecca.""

Rebecca lived in Charlotte. She had flown in several times during Sarah's treatment but had left Georgia shortly before Sarah's final hospitalization.

I hadn't spoken to her in months.

After the funeral, Rebecca and I had argued over Sarah's estate. She accused me of allowing Vanessa too much influence over Lily. I accused her of treating my new marriage like a betrayal of my late wife.

Our relationship had deteriorated until neither of us knew how to make the first call.

"Rebecca knew something?"" I asked.

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't know. But Sarah's final statement instructed me to contact her if the trust was ever challenged.""

"Then call her.""

"I already did.""

He turned his laptop toward me.

An email sat open on the screen.

Rebecca had replied the previous night.

I have waited too long to tell Michael what I saw. If Vanessa has started moving money, the truth cannot stay buried anymore.

Below it was a phone number.

I called immediately.

Rebecca answered after three rings.

"Michael?""

Her voice trembled.

"Rebecca, what did you see?""

She exhaled shakily.

"I should have told you before Sarah died.""

"Tell me now.""

"I visited her on October 14. She was exhausted, but she was alert. We talked about Lily, the trust, and how she wanted you to protect your daughter if anything happened.""

I closed my eyes.

"What about Vanessa?""

"She arrived while I was there. Sarah asked me to leave them alone for a few minutes.""

"What happened?""

"I waited in the hallway. I heard raised voices, but I couldn't make out everything. Then Vanessa came out carrying a folder.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"What folder?""

"I don't know. But she told me Sarah was confused and that I shouldn't encourage her paranoia.""

Rebecca paused.

"Michael, I thought it was just stress. Sarah was very sick, and I didn't want to make things worse.""

"What happened when you went back inside?""

"Sarah was crying. She asked me to promise that if she died, I would make sure Lily received the money she left her.""

My throat tightened.

"Did she tell you why?""

"She said someone had been trying to change the trust. She wouldn't tell me who. She only said she had made a mistake trusting the wrong person.""

I glanced at Daniel.

He was listening intently.

"Rebecca, did you see Vanessa touch Sarah's medication?""

There was a long silence.

Then Rebecca answered.

"No. But I saw Vanessa speaking to a nurse near the medication station. They seemed to be arguing about something. When I asked Vanessa what was wrong, she said Sarah's treatment was costing too much and that the doctors were wasting money on a lost cause.""

My stomach turned.

"Those were her exact words?""

"I remember them because I was furious. I told her Sarah was my sister, not a bill to be paid.""

Rebecca began crying.

"I should have told you. I thought you would believe I was trying to destroy your marriage.""

I swallowed hard.

"I don't know what to believe anymore.""

"I understand.""

"Did Sarah leave you anything?""

"Yes.""

Rebecca hesitated.

"She gave me a small memory card the day before she died. She said it contained copies of documents she couldn't keep at home. I never opened it because she made me promise not to unless someone tried to access Lily's trust.""

I stood so quickly my chair scraped across the floor.

"Where is it?""

"In my house. I'll bring it to Atlanta today.""

"Rebecca, don't tell Vanessa.""

"I won't.""

The call ended.

Daniel leaned back in his chair.

"We need to preserve every document, notify the bank of the suspected forgery, and have the medical records independently reviewed. We also need to make sure Lily is protected from further pressure.""

"I agree.""

I gathered the papers.

Then Daniel placed one final document on the desk.

"There's something else. I received this yesterday from the hospital's compliance office.""

It was a printed email dated three days after Sarah's death.

The sender's name was Vanessa Carter.

The subject line read: Request for Complete Medical File and Estate Documentation.

I scanned the message.

Vanessa had asked for copies of Sarah's medical records, insurance information, and estate paperwork.

At the bottom was a sentence that made my stomach twist.

My husband is emotionally overwhelmed and has authorized me to handle these matters on his behalf.

I had never authorized anything.

Daniel pointed to the attachment.

"This was submitted with the request.""

I opened the scanned document.

It contained my signature.

But unlike the trust withdrawal form, this signature was not a simple forgery.

It was a photocopy of my signature taken from a document I had signed years earlier.

Someone had cut it out and placed it beneath a statement authorizing Vanessa to access Sarah's private medical records.

I looked at Daniel.

"Can the hospital tell us whether she received them?""

"They're checking.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from Rebecca appeared.

Michael, I'm on my way. But I need you to know something before I arrive.

A second message followed.

The memory card contains a recording Sarah made shortly before her death.

Then a third.

I think Vanessa knew Sarah was recording her.

I stared at the screen.

Before I could respond, another notification appeared.

It was from an unknown number.

The message contained a photograph of Lily standing outside Oakridge Elementary, holding her blue lunchbox.

Beneath it were eight words.

Tell your daughter to stop looking for answers.
