Chapter 12: The Man Vanessa Swore Was Gone

Mason's father was supposed to be out of our lives.

Vanessa had told me he moved to Florida shortly after Mason was born. She said he had abandoned them, stopped paying child support, and wanted nothing to do with his son.

I had never met him.

I had never questioned her story.

Now my eight-year-old daughter was telling a counselor that she had seen him outside Sarah's hospital room on the night before my wife died.

I called the counselor back.

"Can you ask Lily whether she remembers his name?""

"We don't want to pressure her. She's already shared a great deal today. We can arrange a gentle follow-up with the appropriate professional present.""

"Of course. I'm sorry.""

I ended the call and looked at Daniel.

"Find out who Mason's father is.""

Daniel nodded.

"I'll have the investigator verify his identity and background. We should avoid contacting him until we know more.""

I walked to the porch.

Lily was sitting beneath the covered roof, her stuffed rabbit resting in her lap. The evening air smelled of wet leaves and damp earth.

I sat beside her.

"Mrs. Bennett told me you remembered something about the hospital.""

Lily nodded.

"I didn't want to tell anyone because Vanessa said I would get Mason in trouble.""

"You're not responsible for getting anyone in trouble, sweetheart. You're only responsible for telling the truth as best you remember it.""

She stared at the rabbit.

"I saw a man in the hallway. He was standing beside Vanessa.""

"Do you remember what he looked like?""

"He had dark hair and a black jacket. He was taller than Daddy.""

"Did you hear them talking?""

Lily nodded.

"Vanessa said, 'You said this would be finished before morning.''"

My chest tightened.

"What did the man say?""

"He said, 'I did what you asked. Now you have to keep your promise.''"

I forced myself to remain calm.

"What happened next?""

"They went into Mommy's room.""

I swallowed.

"Did you go inside?""

"No. Vanessa told me to stay in the hallway. She said Mommy was sleeping and I shouldn't wake her.""

Lily's eyes filled.

"But Mommy wasn't sleeping, Daddy. She opened her eyes when I called her.""

I couldn't speak.

"She looked at me and moved her hand. I wanted to go to her, but Vanessa pulled me away.""

My daughter began to cry.

"She said Mommy needed to rest. Then she took me downstairs and told me not to tell you because you were already sad.""

I wrapped my arms around her.

"You should never have been put in that position.""

Lily buried her face against my chest.

"I think the man was Mason's daddy.""

I held her until she calmed down.

Then I helped her inside and stayed with her until she fell asleep.

Later that night, Daniel called.

"We've identified Mason's father. His name is Eric Lawson. He lives outside Jacksonville, Florida, and he has a documented history of financial disputes with Vanessa.""

"Was he at the hospital?""

"We're checking visitor records and other evidence. There's no confirmation yet.""

"Why would Vanessa bring him there?""

"I don't know. But his name appears in the financial notebook from Margaret's house.""

I sat down.

"What does it say?""

Daniel read from his notes.

"Several payments were made to an account associated with Eric Lawson. The first occurred approximately six months before Sarah's death.""

"How much?""

"About twelve thousand dollars across several transfers.""

I closed my eyes.

Twelve thousand dollars.

Money I had believed was going toward household expenses had apparently been transferred to a man Vanessa claimed had abandoned her.

"Did Eric know about the trust?""

"His name appears in an email recovered from the storage unit. Paul Mercer wrote that Eric had asked whether the trust could be accessed before Lily turned eighteen.""

My hands curled into fists.

"Why would he care about my daughter's inheritance?""

"That's what we need to establish.""

The following morning, the investigator arranged a formal interview with Eric. He agreed to speak after being informed that his name had surfaced in an investigation involving financial documents and a missing medical record.

Daniel and I attended remotely while the investigator questioned him.

Eric appeared on the screen wearing a gray shirt. He looked tired, with dark circles beneath his eyes.

The investigator began with routine questions.

Then she showed him the photograph of Vanessa in the hospital corridor.

Eric stared at it.

"Where did you get that?""

"Do you recognize the location?""

"Yes.""

"Do you recognize the woman?""

He swallowed.

"That's Vanessa.""

"And the hospital?""

Eric looked down.

"Yes.""

"Why were you there?""

He rubbed his face.

"Vanessa called me. She said Sarah was dying and that she needed help with some paperwork.""

I leaned toward the screen.

"What paperwork?""

Eric glanced at the investigator.

"Something about the trust. Vanessa said Sarah had agreed to let her manage the money temporarily.""

"Did you see Sarah?""

"No.""

"Did you enter her room?""

"No.""

The investigator placed a second photograph on the screen.

It showed Eric beside Vanessa in the corridor.

"Then why does this image show you outside her room?""

Eric stared at it for several seconds.

Finally, he said, "Because Vanessa asked me to wait there while she spoke to Sarah.""

My heart hammered.

"What happened afterward?"" the investigator asked.

Eric swallowed hard.

"Vanessa came out carrying a white bag. She told me Sarah had become confused and that the doctors were changing her treatment.""

"What was in the bag?""

"I don't know.""

"Did you ask?""

"Yes. She said it contained personal belongings.""

I remembered Lily's description.

The small white bag.

The hospital hallway.

Vanessa pulling her away from her dying mother.

The investigator continued.

"Why did Vanessa pay you twelve thousand dollars?""

Eric's face hardened.

"That money was repayment for a loan.""

"Do you have documentation?""

"No.""

"Did you know the money came from an account connected to Michael Carter?""

He hesitated.

"I knew Vanessa was married. I didn't know where the money came from.""

I felt anger rising.

"Did you know she was trying to access Lily's trust?""

Eric looked toward the camera.

"She told me she was entitled to some of it because she'd helped raise Lily.""

"She had been living in my house for less than two years," I said.

The investigator raised a hand, asking me to let her continue.

Eric lowered his eyes.

"I know how it sounds.""

"Did you help Vanessa alter any documents?""

"No. Paul handled that.""

"Who is Paul Mercer?""

"An old friend. He said he could help Vanessa straighten out some legal problems.""

The investigator leaned forward.

"Did Paul tell you he had altered Sarah's medical records?""

Eric went completely still.

Then he whispered, "I didn't know about the records until afterward.""

"Afterward when?""

Eric looked directly into the camera.

"The morning Sarah died, Vanessa called me. She said something had gone wrong and that I needed to keep my mouth shut.""

My throat tightened.

"What went wrong?"" the investigator asked.

Eric shook his head.

"She wouldn't tell me.""

"Did she mention medication?""

He hesitated.

"She said the hospital would blame the wrong person if anyone started asking questions.""

Daniel stood abruptly.

The investigator remained composed.

"Mr. Lawson, are you willing to provide your phone records and any messages exchanged with Vanessa?""

Eric nodded.

"Yes.""

Then he looked at me.

"I need you to understand something, Michael. I never wanted Sarah dead.""

The room fell silent.

I stared at him.

"Why would you say that?""

Eric's eyes filled with tears.

"Because Vanessa told me Sarah would die soon anyway. She said the trust would be released eventually, and we just needed to make sure she couldn't change her instructions before that happened.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

The investigator immediately asked him to clarify.

Eric covered his mouth.

"I didn't say I knew what she was planning. I didn't. I swear.""

But he had said enough to change everything.

Vanessa had not merely been trying to access Lily's inheritance after Sarah's death.

She had apparently been discussing the money before Sarah died, while my wife was still alive and trying to protect our daughter.

After the interview, Daniel called me privately.

"We now have testimony connecting Vanessa, Eric, and Paul to the disputed financial documents. The investigators will need to verify Eric's claims and establish what each person knew.""

I nodded, unable to speak.

Then Daniel opened a file he had received that morning.

"There's one final piece of information.""

"What now?""

"Eric says Vanessa gave him a document the day Sarah died. He kept it because he was afraid she might later accuse him of stealing money.""

Daniel turned his screen toward me.

It was a scanned hospital discharge summary.

Sarah's name appeared at the top.

But the document was dated October 19, the day after her death.

At the bottom was a handwritten notation:

Patient discharged to family care.

I stared at the words.

"That's impossible. Sarah died in the hospital.""

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly. The hospital says this document was never issued by its medical records department.""

I looked closer.

Beside the notation was a signature.

Not Vanessa's.

Not Eric's.

It belonged to a doctor who had treated Sarah during her final week.

And beneath the signature was a handwritten sentence that made my heart stop.

Medication review completed. No further investigation required.

Daniel's voice dropped.

"Michael, the doctor has just contacted the investigators. He says he never signed this document.""

I stared at Sarah's name.

Someone had forged a medical record after my wife died.

Someone had tried to make it appear that her care had been reviewed and closed.

And if the doctor was telling the truth, the person who created that document had access to information that only a small number of people could have known.

Then my phone rang.

It was Lily.

She was calling from the living room, where she had been drawing with Rebecca.

"Daddy," she whispered, "I remembered something else about the hospital.""

I closed my eyes.

"What is it, sweetheart?""

"Mommy gave me something before Vanessa took me away.""

My heart stopped.

"What did she give you?""

"A little paper. She told me to hide it somewhere safe.""

I gripped the phone.

"Do you still have it?""

Lily was silent for a moment.

Then she said, "Yes. It's inside my old lunchbox.""

I looked toward the kitchen.

The pale blue lunchbox sat on the counter, its white stars faded from years of washing.

The same lunchbox Vanessa had filled with scraps while keeping fresh food for Mason.

The same lunchbox Lily had carried to school every morning.

May you like

I had thought it was only a reminder of what my daughter had endured.

Now it might contain the last piece of evidence Sarah had managed to save before she died.
