Chapter 3: The Money That Was Never Hers
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The fire burned behind Dad, turning the backyard orange. A string of tiny sparks rose into the darkening sky.
I couldn't stop staring at my name on his phone.
Emily Carter.
Under it sat a purchase total of $3,800.
I had never seen that boutique before. I'd never set foot inside it. And I'd never given anyone permission to spend money in my name.
"Dad," I whispered, "what account is that?""
He looked at me.
"The savings account I opened for you when you were born.""
I shook my head.
"But I thought that money was for college.""
"It was.""
My stomach twisted.
When I was little, Dad used to tell me that every birthday, he'd put a little money aside for my future. Sometimes he added more after a good year at work. Sometimes my grandparents contributed.
I remembered him showing me a bank statement when I was twelve.
"One day, this will help you start your life," he'd said.
I'd imagined college textbooks, a small apartment, and the freedom to choose a future without worrying about every dollar.
I hadn't thought about that account in years.
Then Vanessa joined our family.
And gradually, Dad stopped talking about it.
"How much was in it?"" I asked.
Dad didn't answer immediately.
He turned toward Vanessa.
"Tell her.""
Vanessa wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand.
"Michael, you're making a terrible mistake.""
"How much?""
She glanced at Madison.
My stepsister suddenly seemed fascinated by the patio stones.
"Mom," Madison murmured, "what did you do?""
Vanessa snapped toward her.
"Be quiet.""
Dad's eyes narrowed.
"Don't speak to her like that. Not when she's finally asking the right question.""
Vanessa drew a shaky breath.
"It was only a temporary transfer.""
Dad went completely still.
"Transfer to where?""
"An expense account.""
"Whose expense account?""
She looked down.
"Mine.""
The word landed like a slap.
I felt something inside me give way.
"You took my college money?""
Vanessa's head jerked up.
"I didn't take anything permanently!""
"Then why did you use it?""
"Because the money was sitting there!""
I stared at her.
"It wasn't yours.""
"You were eighteen years old, Emily. You didn't need thousands of dollars just sitting in a bank account.""
Dad took a step forward.
"She didn't need it? That was her future!""
Vanessa threw up her hands.
"And what about my daughter? Do you think Madison's future is free? Do you think college applications, clothes, activities, and a decent social life just happen without money?""
"Then use your own money!""
"We're married!""
"And that account belongs to Emily!""
Vanessa's voice broke into a shriek.
"You make everything about her!""
Madison grabbed her mother's sleeve.
"Mom, just tell him it was an accident.""
Vanessa whirled around.
"It was NOT an accident!""
The words escaped before she could stop them.
Everyone fell silent.
Even Madison stepped back.
Dad lowered his phone.
"What did you just say?""
Vanessa pressed both hands over her mouth.
I could hear my own heartbeat.
"Vanessa," Dad said, "what wasn't an accident?""
She shook her head rapidly.
"Nothing. I didn't mean—"
"The transfer? The purchase? The money?""
"I was going to put it back!""
"When?""
She began crying again.
"When things settled down.""
Dad's expression was almost frighteningly calm.
"Things settled down six months ago. You told me you canceled Madison's private tutoring because we needed to reduce expenses. You told me we'd postponed the vacation because money was tight. You told me Emily's college account was untouched.""
Vanessa stared at him.
He took another look at the receipt.
"And now I find a charge for $3,800 made this morning, registered under Emily's name, from an account you said you never accessed.""
I looked at the boutique name again.
"Why would you buy a dress with my name on it?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
"Why not use your own name?""
Still nothing.
I stepped closer.
"Was the dress supposed to be mine?""
For the first time that evening, Vanessa looked genuinely frightened.
"No," she whispered.
Madison turned toward her.
"What?""
Vanessa grabbed her daughter's arm.
"Go inside.""
"No! What did you buy?""
"Madison, go inside!""
But Madison pulled free.
"Is it my dress?""
Vanessa's silence answered her.
I felt the yard tilt beneath my feet.
The designer gown.
The $3,800 charge.
My name.
It had never been a graduation present for me.
Vanessa had used my savings to purchase an expensive dress for Madison, then registered the purchase under my name.
And she'd done it on the very morning she'd told me there was no money to help me buy a simple white dress.
"Why?"" I asked.
My voice sounded small, even to me.
Vanessa looked at me with an expression that was almost resentment.
"Madison needed something special for her graduation photographs. The boutique had one dress left in her size.""
"So you used my money.""
"I intended to replace it.""
"With what?""
She looked away.
Dad let out a short, bitter laugh.
"That's what I've been asking for months.""
He turned to me.
"Emily, I need you to understand something. I didn't know she'd been accessing your account. I thought the money was safe.""
I wanted to believe him.
I wanted to run into his arms and let him tell me everything would be okay.
But my dress lay ruined beside the back door, and the fire was consuming the expensive clothes that had always seemed to prove Vanessa and Madison belonged in this house more than I did.
I couldn't make myself move.
"How much is left?"" I asked.
Dad looked at the bank information on his screen.
His thumb hovered over the display.
"I don't know yet.""
That answer frightened me more than anything else he'd said.
He tapped the banking app, entered his password, and waited for the account balance to load.
Vanessa began shaking her head.
"Michael, please. Don't do this in front of the girls.""
He ignored her.
Madison moved closer to her mother.
"Mom, how much did you take?""
"Stop asking questions!""
"YOU SAID DAD PAID FOR THE DRESS!""
Vanessa grabbed her shoulders.
"I said stop!""
Madison jerked away, her face twisting with anger.
"You told me the boutique gave you a discount!""
"They did!""
"Then why is it almost four thousand dollars?""
"Because it's a designer dress!""
Dad's phone chimed.
He looked down.
His face drained of color.
I reached for his arm.
"Dad?""
He didn't answer.
Instead, he turned the screen toward me.
There were multiple withdrawals listed beneath the balance.
One from six months ago.
Another from four months ago.
Then another.
And another.
The $3,800 charge was only the most recent transaction.
My savings account had been slowly drained, one transfer at a time.
Dad scrolled down.
His fingers began to tremble.
"Emily," he said quietly, "there's something else.""
He turned the phone toward Vanessa.
"These transfers weren't made today. They've been happening since last year.""
Vanessa stared at the screen.
Madison's mouth fell open.
Dad pointed at a transaction dated the previous November.
"Where did this money go?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't remember.""
He pointed to another.
"And this one?""
"I told you. I don't remember!""
Then he opened the oldest transaction in the list.
The amount was $12,000.
The recipient wasn't a boutique.
It wasn't a credit card company.
It was a bank account belonging to someone whose name I'd never heard in our house.
Dad read it twice.
Then he looked directly at Vanessa.
"Who is Daniel Brooks?""
Vanessa stopped breathing.
Madison turned toward her mother.
"Mom?""
I had never seen that name before.
But the look on Vanessa's face told me one thing.
Daniel Brooks wasn't a stranger.
And whatever connected him to my stolen college money was far worse than a designer dress.
Dad stepped away from the fire and unlocked his phone again.
"You're going to tell us who he is," he said, "and you're going to explain why my daughter's savings have been paying him.""
Vanessa backed toward the house.
Then her phone rang.
The name flashing across the screen was *DANIEL*.
Dad looked at it.
Vanessa looked at Dad.
May you like
And Madison whispered the question that made the entire night change direction.
"Mom, why is my father's name calling you?""
