Chapter 12: The Box in the Storage Unit
The storage facility sat behind a row of auto repair shops on the outskirts of Atlanta.
Rows of gray metal doors stretched beneath a corrugated roof. The air smelled of dust, hot asphalt, and old oil.
Daniel was waiting beside Unit 214.
He was taller than I'd expected, with graying hair and tired eyes. He wore a brown jacket despite the warm weather and kept rubbing his palms against his jeans.
When he saw Madison, he stopped moving.
"Madison?""
She stood beside Dad.
"Don't act like you know me.""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"You're right. I don't. Not yet.""
"Then why did you want to meet me?""
He looked down.
"Because I've spent seventeen years hearing about you from someone who told me I wasn't allowed to see you.""
Madison folded her arms.
"You could have gone to court.""
"I should have.""
"You could have hired a lawyer.""
"I should have done that, too.""
"Instead, you sent money to my mother?""
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
"Yes.""
"How much?""
"I don't know the exact total. I believed the money was going toward your care and education.""
Madison laughed bitterly.
"Well, I got a designer dress out of it.""
Daniel's face tightened.
"I'm sorry.""
"Stop saying that!""
Her voice echoed between the storage units.
"You don't get to show up after seventeen years and act like you're sorry enough to fix everything.""
Daniel lowered his head.
"No. I don't.""
For a moment, I felt sympathy for him.
Then I remembered the money he'd sent without verifying where it went, and the years he'd accepted Vanessa's excuses.
He wasn't the only person who had failed Madison.
But he had played a part.
Rachel stepped forward.
"We need to examine the documents you mentioned. If they contain private information, we'll handle them carefully.""
Daniel unlocked the unit.
Inside were several plastic storage boxes, a filing cabinet, and a stack of flattened cardboard cartons.
He moved the boxes aside and opened the filing cabinet.
"I started keeping copies after I realized Vanessa wasn't being honest with me.""
"How long ago?"" Dad asked.
He handed Rachel a folder.
The first documents were bank transfers, rental agreements, and receipts from the bridal boutique.
Then Rachel found a bundle of letters tied with string.
The handwriting on the envelopes matched the writing in my mother's folder.
I felt my chest tighten.
"Those are Mom's letters.""
Rachel examined the dates.
"These appear to be copies of correspondence from Sarah Carter to Michael Carter and Robert Carter.""
My grandfather.
Dad took the top letter with trembling fingers.
It was dated three weeks before the accident.
Michael,
I've discovered that Vanessa has been asking questions about Emily's trust. She says she's trying to help with the paperwork, but I don't like the way she talks about the account.
I don't want to accuse anyone without proof. Please check the records yourself.
Dad closed his eyes.
"I never received this.""
Daniel handed him another page.
"Vanessa told me she found the letters in a box after Sarah died. She said they proved Sarah had been planning to leave you.""
"But they say the opposite," I whispered.
Daniel nodded.
"That's why I started keeping copies.""
Rachel examined the remaining pages.
Several were missing.
The letters stopped abruptly, leaving gaps in the dates.
"Where are the originals?"" she asked.
"Vanessa took them.""
"Why?""
"She said she needed to return them to the family. I believed her at the time.""
Dad looked at him sharply.
"You believed a woman who told you she wanted to marry you while she was still married to me?""
Daniel accepted the accusation without protest.
"I know how that sounds.""
"It sounds like you helped her steal from my daughter.""
"I didn't know where the money was coming from.""
"Then you should have asked.""
Daniel looked at Madison.
"I should have asked a lot of questions.""
She turned away.
Rachel placed the letters into a protective folder.
"We'll need to verify these documents and establish how they came into your possession.""
Daniel nodded.
"There are more.""
He moved to the back of the unit and pulled a cardboard box from beneath a folded table.
Inside were old photographs, bank statements, and a sealed envelope addressed to my grandfather.
The envelope had never been opened.
Dad examined the handwriting.
"It's my father's.""
He broke the seal carefully.
Inside was a letter dated five months before my grandfather's death.
Michael,
I have been reviewing the documents concerning Emily's trust. Something is wrong with the account records. There are withdrawals I did not authorize, and Vanessa has refused to explain them.
I have contacted the bank and requested a full review.
If anything happens to me before this is resolved, make sure Emily's inheritance is protected.
Dad's face turned white.
"Five months before he died," he whispered.
I took the letter from him.
My grandfather had known something was wrong.
He'd tried to investigate it.
And someone had apparently forged his signature after he died, using his name to gain access to the money he'd been trying to protect.
Rachel looked through the box.
At the bottom was a bank statement dated two weeks after my grandfather's funeral.
A transfer of $9,500 had been made to an account belonging to a company called Brooks Property Holdings.
Daniel stared at it.
"I've never heard of that company.""
Rachel checked the registration information on her laptop.
Then she looked up.
"Daniel, do you own Brooks Property Holdings?""
"No.""
"Have you ever received payments from it?""
"No.""
Rachel typed another search.
The company had been registered using a mailing address associated with Claire Donovan's real estate office.
Madison stepped closer.
"Claire?""
Rachel nodded slowly.
"It appears the company may be connected to someone in your mother's circle. We'll need to verify the records before drawing conclusions.""
Dad looked at the documents.
"Why would Claire be involved?""
Daniel rubbed his face.
"Vanessa told me Claire was helping her manage some investments. She said Claire knew how to move money between accounts without creating unnecessary paperwork.""
Rachel's expression sharpened.
"Did you ever authorize Claire to handle your finances?""
"No.""
"Did you sign any documents for her?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Never.""
I stared at the papers.
Vanessa had told me that I was selfish for wanting a graduation dress.
She'd told Madison that her biological father was dead.
She'd told Dad that the money was safe.
And she'd apparently used my grandfather's name to move funds through a company none of us recognized.
But one question remained.
Why had she needed Claire's help?
Rachel opened the final folder.
Inside was a printed email dated four months earlier.
The sender was Claire Donovan.
The recipient was Vanessa.
The subject line read:
*PLAN B — IF MICHAEL CHECKS THE TRUST.*
Rachel began reading.
The first account is already protected. If Michael starts asking questions, we move the remaining balance before he can freeze anything.
Below that was a second paragraph.
The only risk is Emily. If she discovers the missing money before the divorce is finalized, she could challenge the authorization.
I felt my skin go cold.
Dad gripped the table.
Rachel continued.
Make sure she stays distracted until graduation. After that, she'll be busy with college, and no one will have time to question the paperwork.
Madison stared at the page.
"That's why she destroyed the dress.""
Nobody spoke.
The realization settled over us.
Vanessa hadn't simply lost her temper.
She'd known that my graduation was approaching. She'd known I'd be distracted by the ceremony and the search for another dress. And she'd known that if I discovered the money was missing, I might start asking questions.
The ruined dress had bought her time.
Dad's voice was barely audible.
"She planned this.""
Rachel nodded.
"This email suggests deliberate planning, but we'll need to authenticate it and establish the full context.""
She turned the page.
There was another email beneath it.
This one was from Claire to Vanessa, sent the night before the paint incident.
The transfer must be completed by Friday. If Michael discovers the second account, everything falls apart.
At the bottom, Vanessa had replied with a single sentence.
Don't worry. Emily won't be in any condition to ask questions after tomorrow.
I stared at the words.
The room seemed to tilt.
She had known exactly what she intended to do to me.
The ripped dress. The red paint. The humiliation.
It had all been part of a plan to keep me quiet.
Madison covered her mouth and began to cry.
Dad stepped away from the table, breathing hard.
Rachel gathered the documents.
"We need to take these to the authorities and notify the bank immediately. Nobody should confront Vanessa or Claire alone.""
But as we turned toward the exit, Daniel spoke.
"There's something else you need to know.""
He reached into the filing cabinet and removed a small black notebook.
"Vanessa kept a list of every transfer. I copied it before she took the originals.""
He opened it to the final page.
There were three names.
*Claire Donovan.*
*Vanessa Brooks.*
And beneath them, written in red ink, was a third name.
*Michael Carter.*
Dad stared at it.
"What does that mean?""
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't know. But Vanessa wrote that next to your name.""
I looked at the notebook.
Beside Dad's name was a date.
Tomorrow.
May you like
And underneath it were five words that made my blood run cold.
Make him take the blame.
