Chapter 13: The Man She Planned to Destroy
“Make him take the blame.””
Those five words followed me all the way home.
Dad drove with both hands locked around the steering wheel. Rachel had taken copies of every document from the storage unit and promised to contact the bank and the appropriate authorities. Daniel had agreed to provide a formal statement.
But none of that explained why Vanessa had written my father's name beside a date that was only hours away.
Or what she intended to make him take the blame for.
Madison sat beside me in the back seat, staring at the black notebook Rachel had photographed before leaving.
“Do you think she was going to accuse him of stealing the money?”” she asked.
Dad glanced at us through the rearview mirror.
“Possibly. We won't know until Rachel examines the rest of the records.””
“But the money was taken from Emily's account,” Madison said.
“How could Mom make it look like you did it?””
“By using documents with my signature,” Dad replied.
“By claiming I authorized the transfers. By telling people whatever they needed to hear.””
I watched the neighborhoods slide past the window.
“What happens if people believe her?””
Dad's expression softened in the mirror.
“Then we show them the truth.””
He said it confidently.
But I noticed that his hands were trembling.
When we reached the house, a white envelope was wedged beneath the front door.
There was no postage, no return address, and no name on the outside.
Dad opened it carefully.
Inside was a formal notice from the bank.
His personal accounts had been temporarily restricted pending a review of suspected unauthorized transactions.
He read the notice twice.
Then he sat down on the bottom step.
“Dad?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Vanessa must have submitted something before the bank froze the accounts.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means she may have tried to make me look responsible for the transfers.””
Madison dropped her bag.
“She can't do that!””
“She can make an accusation,” Dad said quietly.
“Whether she can prove it is another matter.””
His phone rang.
Rachel.
He answered immediately.
“Tell me you've seen the notice.””
“I have,” she replied.
“The bank received a complaint alleging that the transfers were authorized by you and that you later attempted to conceal them.””
Dad closed his eyes.
“That's absurd.””
“I agree that the documents raise serious concerns. But we need to respond quickly. Can you provide records showing where you were when the authorization was supposedly signed?””
“Yes. I was traveling for work.””
“Good. Send me your travel records, hotel receipts, and any emails showing your location. We'll also request the bank's original submission logs.””
Dad thanked her and ended the call.
I sat beside him on the stairs.
“Why would she do this to you?””
He looked at the floor.
“Because she knows I won't let her take your future without a fight.””
The words made my throat tighten.
For the first time since the dress was destroyed, I reached for his hand.
He held mine.
Then someone knocked on the door.
Three firm knocks.
Dad stood.
A woman in a dark suit waited on the porch, holding a leather folder.
“Michael Carter?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Detective Harris. I've been asked to speak with you regarding a financial complaint involving several disputed transactions.””
Dad stepped aside.
“Of course. Come in.””
The detective sat at the kitchen table while Dad explained the account, the forged documents, and the records we'd found in the storage unit.
She listened without interrupting.
When he finished, she opened her folder.
“Mr. Carter, I need to ask you about a document submitted yesterday.””
She placed a printed page on the table.
It was a financial declaration bearing Dad's signature.
According to the document, he had authorized Vanessa to withdraw money from my trust and transfer it to a separate account.
Dad shook his head.
“I never signed that.””
Detective Harris nodded.
“That's what I need to establish. Do you recognize the signature?””
“It resembles mine, but I didn't write it.””
She made a note.
“Do you know a woman named Claire Donovan?””
“Yes.””
“Have you ever given her permission to act on your behalf in financial matters?””
“No.””
The detective looked at the document again.
“Her name appears in the submission records as the person who uploaded the declaration.””
Madison covered her mouth.
I stared at the detective.
“So Claire helped Vanessa?””
“We're investigating whether she knowingly submitted false information. At this stage, I can't tell you more.””
She turned another page.
“There's also a statement from Vanessa claiming that Emily was fully aware of the transfers and agreed to them.””
I felt my face burn.
“That's a lie.””
“I understand that is your position. Do you have any evidence supporting it?””
Dad immediately handed her copies of the bank records, the emails, and my mother's letter.
Detective Harris examined the documents.
“These are important. Please preserve the originals and avoid altering any files or messages.””
She looked directly at me.
“Emily, did you ever give Vanessa permission to use your college savings?””
“No.””
“Did you sign any authorization allowing her to access the account?””
“I signed some paperwork she gave me when I was seventeen, but I didn't knowingly authorize her to take money. I need to see the original documents to know exactly what I signed.””
The detective nodded.
“That's a useful distinction. Don't guess about anything you're unsure of. Tell us only what you remember.””
After another twenty minutes, she closed her folder.
“We'll follow up once we've reviewed the records. In the meantime, if Vanessa or Claire contacts you about changing your statement, save the messages and let us know.””
When she left, the house felt strangely empty.
Dad made tea none of us drank.
Madison sat at the table with her hands wrapped around the mug.
Then her phone buzzed.
A message from Vanessa.
Mom: I know you're angry, but you need to come home. We can still fix this.
Madison stared at the screen.
Another message arrived.
Mom: Your father is lying to you. Daniel has manipulated everyone. You need to remember who raised you.
Madison's fingers shook.
She typed a response, then stopped.
“What should I say?””
I looked at her.
“For once, you don't have to say anything just because she wants you to.””
Madison deleted the message.
Then she placed her phone facedown.
A third message arrived.
This time, it was a photograph.
It showed a document spread across Vanessa's dining table.
At the top were the words *FINAL TRANSFER AUTHORIZATION*.
Beneath them was a list of accounts, including my college trust.
At the bottom was a signature.
Dad's.
But beside it, in red ink, Vanessa had written a sentence.
Once Michael signs this, no one can touch the money.
Madison stared at the photograph.
“She wants him to sign something.””
Dad took the phone and enlarged the image.
Then his face changed.
The document wasn't dated tomorrow.
It was dated that afternoon.
And beneath the transfer authorization was a second page bearing my name.
The heading read:
*BENEFICIARY CONSENT AND RELEASE.*
Dad looked at me.
“She isn't finished.””
He reached for his phone to call Rachel.
But before he could dial, another message appeared on Madison's screen.
This one contained only seven words.
Bring Emily to the house. Come alone.
Madison looked at me.
I looked at Dad.
For the first time, none of us had any doubt about what Vanessa wanted.
May you like
She wanted me back under her control.
And this time, she wasn't asking.
