Chapter 9: The Secret Behind My Son's Birth Certificate
I didn't speak for several seconds.
Emily had accessed Robert's medical records three days after his funeral.
She had also paid for the DNA test, requested my competency evaluation, and helped Vanessa obtain information about the estate.
I was beginning to understand why Robert had written her name in the blue folder.
But I still needed to know one thing.
Why?
That evening, I asked Emily to come to the house alone.
She arrived at six fifteen.
She was wearing the same gray sweater she'd worn the previous day, and her eyes were swollen.
"Mom, did something happen?""
I placed the hospital record on the kitchen table.
"Do you recognize this?""
She looked down.
The moment she saw her name, her face changed.
"Oh, God.""
"Three days after your father's funeral, you accessed his medical records.""
Emily pulled out a chair.
"I can explain.""
"Then explain.""
She stared at the document.
"Vanessa asked me to.""
I closed my eyes.
"Of course she did.""
"She said there was something in Dad's medical file that could help establish whether he had been mentally capable of signing the trust documents.""
"Why did you need to know that?""
"She said the estate could be challenged if Dad wasn't competent.""
"Did you believe her?""
Emily nodded.
"And you didn't think to ask me?""
"Mom, you were grieving. I thought I was protecting the family.""
I looked at her.
"You keep using that word. Protecting. You protected everyone except me.""
She began crying.
I let her cry.
For once, I wasn't going to rush over and comfort her.
"Did you see the DNA records?"" I asked.
Emily nodded.
"Yes.""
"What did they say?""
She looked toward the window.
"Mom, I think you should sit down.""
"I'm already sitting.""
She swallowed.
"The first test wasn't reliable. Dad knew that. That's why he ordered another one.""
"Did you see the second result?""
"No.""
"Then what did you find?""
She reached into her handbag and removed a small photograph.
It showed a young Robert standing beside another man in front of Charlotte Memorial Hospital.
The other man was wearing a doctor's coat.
I recognized him immediately.
Dr. Samuel Carter.
"Where did you get this?""
"It was inside Dad's medical file.""
I examined the photograph.
On the back was a handwritten date.
The day Daniel was born.
And beneath it, Robert had written:
The promise I made to Carter must never become a weapon against my son.
I looked up.
"What promise?""
Emily shook her head.
"I don't know.""
"Then why did you keep this from me?""
"Because Vanessa told me something.""
"What?""
Emily took a shaky breath.
"She said Daniel's biological father might have been a wealthy businessman who had left money behind. She thought if we could prove it, Daniel could claim an additional inheritance.""
I stared at her.
"So this was about money again.""
"Yes.""
I stood and walked to the kitchen window.
Outside, the lawn was still scattered with a few belongings the movers hadn't managed to collect.
My husband's broken photograph had been placed safely on the dining table.
I looked at it.
"Your father loved Daniel more than anything.""
Emily nodded.
"I know.""
"Then why did he write that promise?""
She had no answer.
James arrived a few minutes later.
He had spent the afternoon trying to locate Dr. Carter.
"Good news," he announced.
"I found him.""
I turned.
"Where?""
"He's retired and living outside Charlotte. I spoke with his assistant. He's willing to meet us tomorrow.""
Emily looked relieved.
"Maybe he'll explain everything.""
James placed a document on the table.
"He also told me something interesting.""
"What?""
"Your husband visited him twice during the final month of his life. The second visit was apparently very emotional.""
I sat down.
"Did he say why?""
"Not over the telephone.""
The next morning, we drove to a quiet residential neighborhood in Matthews.
Dr. Samuel Carter lived in a modest brick house surrounded by oak trees.
He was eighty-one, with silver hair and a slight limp.
When he opened the door and saw me, his expression softened.
"Margaret Bennett.""
"Dr. Carter.""
He stepped aside.
"I wondered when someone would come.""
We sat in his living room.
He offered coffee, but I declined.
I didn't want anything except the truth.
"Doctor," I began, "what happened the night Daniel was born?""
He stared at his hands.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then he looked up.
"Margaret, before I answer, I need you to understand something. Robert was one of the finest men I ever knew.""
I nodded.
"He loved Daniel.""
"I know.""
Dr. Carter leaned back.
"Your husband came to see me shortly before his death. He asked about a record from the night Daniel was born.""
"What record?""
"The original hospital delivery report.""
James opened his notebook.
"Was it different from the birth certificate?""
Dr. Carter nodded.
"Yes.""
My heart began racing.
"Different how?""
He looked directly at me.
"Because the original record listed a different blood type for Daniel's biological father.""
I frowned.
"What does blood type have to do with anything?""
Dr. Carter hesitated.
"Your husband believed Daniel was not biologically his. But the original record suggested something else.""
"What?""
The doctor slowly stood and walked toward a cabinet.
He removed an old medical folder.
"I kept a copy of the original delivery report because Robert asked me to preserve it.""
He placed it on the table.
I opened the folder.
The document was yellowed with age.
At the top were my name, the date, and the hospital's seal.
Then I saw the handwritten notation.
*Biological father: Robert Bennett.*
I looked at the doctor.
"Then why did the first DNA test say otherwise?""
Dr. Carter shook his head.
"Because the first test was based on a sample that didn't belong to Robert.""
James leaned forward.
"How do you know?""
"Because I was the physician who collected the original sample for the second test.""
My heart pounded.
"Did you receive the results?""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
"Where are they?""
Dr. Carter reached into the folder and removed a sealed envelope.
"Robert asked me to keep this until the truth was needed.""
He placed it in front of me.
My husband's handwriting appeared across the front.
For Margaret. Only if someone tries to use Daniel's birth against him.
I stared at it.
Then Dr. Carter spoke.
"Mrs. Bennett, your husband discovered who had deliberately falsified the first DNA test.""
I slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was the second laboratory report.
And beneath it was a handwritten confession.
The name at the bottom wasn't Vanessa's.
It wasn't Daniel's.
It was Emily's.
I looked at my daughter, who had accompanied us but hadn't spoken throughout the meeting.
Her face turned completely white.
"Mom," she whispered, "I can explain.""
But Dr. Carter interrupted her.
"There's something else, Margaret. Your husband didn't just discover the person who altered the DNA test.""
He pointed to the final paragraph of Robert's letter.
"He discovered that person had been stealing from your family for years—and had already arranged to take control of your house before he died.""
I stared at the signature.
May you like
Then I looked at Emily.
For the first time, my daughter didn't even try to deny it.
