Chapter 10: The Confession My Daughter Never Wanted Me to Hear

Emily didn't move.

She sat frozen in the doctor's living room, staring at the confession as though the paper might disappear if she refused to acknowledge it.

I looked at Dr. Carter.

"Please explain what this means.""

He folded his hands.

"Robert contacted me six months before his death. He was concerned because someone had obtained a sample from his medical records and submitted it to another laboratory without his permission.""

"Vanessa?""

"Initially, he suspected her. But the evidence eventually pointed elsewhere.""

I looked at Emily.

My daughter began shaking her head.

"Mom, please. You need to hear everything before you judge me.""

I held up the confession.

"Then start explaining.""

Emily wiped her face.

"Vanessa contacted me after Dad died. She told me she'd discovered something about Daniel's birth. She said Dad had been keeping secrets and that Daniel might lose his inheritance.""

"Why would that matter to you?""

"Because she said Daniel and I would both lose everything if the trust wasn't challenged.""

James interrupted.

"That doesn't explain the altered DNA test.""

Emily nodded.

"I know.""

She took a breath.

"Vanessa had an original sample from Dad. She told me she needed another sample from Daniel. She said the laboratory would compare them and settle the inheritance question.""

"And you helped her?""

"Yes.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"How?""

Emily stared at the carpet.

"I collected a toothbrush from Daniel's bathroom and gave it to her.""

Daniel wasn't there to hear the confession.

For that, I was grateful.

Dr. Carter looked at her.

"That wasn't the only sample you provided, was it?""

Emily closed her eyes.

"No.""

"Tell us.""

"Vanessa said the first sample wasn't good enough. She asked me to obtain one of Dad's old medical samples from the hospital.""

James leaned forward.

"How did you access his medical file?""

"I used the authorization Vanessa gave me.""

Dr. Carter shook his head.

"That authorization was never valid.""

Emily began crying.

"I know that now.""

I stared at my daughter.

"Did you know the results were being changed?""

She shook her head.

"Not at first. Vanessa showed me a report claiming Daniel wasn't Dad's biological son. She said the laboratory had confirmed it.""

"Why would she want that?""

"She said Daniel could use it to challenge the estate. She believed Dad had another financial arrangement connected to his biological family.""

James examined Robert's confession.

"According to this letter, Robert suspected someone had deliberately substituted samples.""

Dr. Carter nodded.

"He ordered an independent test using samples I personally collected. The results confirmed that Robert was Daniel's biological father.""

I closed my eyes.

Relief and grief washed over me together.

My husband had never doubted the boy he'd raised.

But the doctor wasn't finished.

"There's something else," he said.

He pointed to the final paragraph.

"Robert discovered that Emily had received payments from Vanessa's consulting company.""

I looked at my daughter.

"Payments?""

Emily covered her mouth.

"Mom...""

"How much?""

She whispered, "Twenty-five thousand dollars.""

I stood.

The chair scraped loudly against the wooden floor.

"Twenty-five thousand dollars?""

Emily nodded.

"What did you do with it?""

"I used some to pay my debts.""

"What debts?""

She began crying harder.

"Credit cards. A personal loan. I was behind on my mortgage.""

I stared at her.

"You took money from Vanessa to help her destroy our family?""

"I didn't know she planned to take the house!""

"But you knew she was trying to challenge your father's will.""

Emily nodded.

James closed the folder.

"Did Robert confront you?""

Emily looked down.

"Yes.""

"When?""

"About three weeks before he died.""

I remembered those final weeks.

Emily had visited Robert twice without telling me.

I'd assumed she wanted time with her father.

Now I wondered what had happened behind that closed hospital door.

"What did he say?"" I asked.

Emily's voice became barely audible.

"He told me he knew about the money. He said he had evidence. He gave me one chance to return it and tell you the truth.""

"And what did you do?""

"I promised him I would.""

"Did you?""

"No.""

She broke down completely.

I felt my eyes burning.

"Why, Emily?""

"Because Vanessa threatened me. She said she had copies of the payments and would tell everyone I had helped steal from Dad's business. She said I'd lose my children if the authorities got involved.""

I stared at her.

"So instead of admitting what you'd done, you helped her question my mental capacity?""

Emily nodded.

"I thought if we could get control of the house, everything would stop.""

James spoke firmly.

"That's not how financial exploitation works, Ms. Bennett. Your actions may have legal consequences regardless of what Vanessa told you.""

Emily wiped her cheeks.

"I understand.""

Dr. Carter quietly handed me the second DNA report.

"Your husband wanted you to know that Daniel was always his son, regardless of biology. He was very specific about that.""

I looked at the report.

For the first time in days, I felt something other than anger.

Robert had protected Daniel's place in the family even after discovering the fraud.

But why had he hidden everything from me?

James seemed to understand my thoughts.

"He probably hoped the situation could be resolved without involving you while you were already dealing with his illness.""

I nodded.

Then Emily reached into her handbag.

"There's one more thing.""

She removed a small USB drive.

"Vanessa gave me this last year. She told me to keep it somewhere safe.""

James took it carefully.

"What's on it?""

"Emails. Bank transfers. And recordings.""

"Recordings of whom?""

Emily looked directly at me.

"Vanessa and Daniel.""

My heart began pounding.

"Talking about what?""

Emily hesitated.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

"How they planned to have you declared incompetent before the house was transferred.""

James stood immediately.

"Where did you get these recordings?""

"Vanessa recorded some of their conversations. She wanted proof that Daniel agreed with the plan.""

I looked at my daughter.

"Why are you giving this to us now?""

Emily's eyes filled again.

"Because yesterday, Vanessa called me. She said if I didn't destroy the evidence, she would make sure I went to prison alone.""

James placed the USB drive inside an evidence envelope.

"She may have just made a serious mistake.""

My phone rang.

Officer Reynolds.

I answered.

"Margaret, we have a development," he said.

"What happened?""

"Vanessa has left the interview location. She was released pending further investigation, but she's now missing.""

I looked at James.

Then the officer added something that made my blood run cold.

"Before leaving, she withdrew $40,000 from a business account and purchased a one-way airline ticket.""

"Where is she going?""

He paused.

"That's what we're trying to establish. But we found something else in her vehicle.""

"What?""

"A copy of your husband's original trust agreement.""

I looked at the blue folder.

James's face hardened.

"Was it signed?""

The officer answered.

"No. But someone has written a note across the front.""

I tightened my grip on the phone.

May you like

"What does it say?""

"Margaret Bennett must never see the final page.""
