Chapter 11: The Missing Page That Could Cost Me Everything
James drove me home without turning on the radio.
The officer's words kept repeating in my mind.
Margaret Bennett must never see the final page.
Why?
What could Robert have written that Vanessa was so desperate to hide?
When we arrived, Officer Reynolds was already waiting near the driveway.
He carried a clear evidence bag containing a folded sheet of paper.
"Mrs. Bennett, this was recovered from Vanessa's vehicle.""
I looked through the plastic.
It was a page from Robert's original trust agreement.
The page number was seventeen.
James immediately compared it with the copy inside his briefcase.
"Page seventeen is missing from our version.""
Officer Reynolds nodded.
"That's why I wanted you to see it.""
James carefully examined the document.
Then his expression changed.
"Margaret, we need to speak privately.""
We entered the study.
He placed the recovered page beside the original agreement.
The first paragraph looked ordinary.
It described the conditions under which the trust could be amended.
Then I noticed a section titled Emergency Protection and Successor Control.
I read it twice.
"James, what does this mean?""
He adjusted his glasses.
"It means Robert anticipated a situation in which someone might attempt to have you declared incapable of managing your affairs.""
I felt a chill.
"How?""
He pointed to the paragraph.
"If a fraudulent incapacity petition is submitted, the trustee has the authority to appoint an independent fiduciary to protect the property until the matter is resolved.""
"Who is the fiduciary?""
James looked at the bottom.
"Your husband named me.""
I stared at him.
"You?""
He nodded.
"Yes. Robert gave me temporary authority to protect the trust if there was credible evidence of attempted exploitation.""
I sank into the chair.
"So Vanessa wanted to destroy this page because...""
"Because it directly contradicts her plan. Even if she managed to obtain a temporary court order, the trust provides a separate mechanism to protect your ownership.""
I looked at the document again.
There was another paragraph.
"What about this?""
James read it carefully.
His expression became serious.
"This section concerns the children's inheritance.""
"What does it say?""
"If either child knowingly participates in fraud against you or attempts to obtain control of the property through deception, their inheritance can be suspended pending judicial review.""
I closed my eyes.
Robert had protected me.
But he had also anticipated that our children might become involved.
I wondered how much pain he'd carried during those final months.
James placed the page inside a protective folder.
"We need to give this to the authorities.""
Before he could continue, Daniel appeared at the doorway.
"Mom?""
I turned.
He looked exhausted.
His shirt was wrinkled, and his eyes were red.
"Can we talk?""
James stood.
"I'll give you a few minutes, Margaret.""
When he left, Daniel sat across from me.
"I heard about Vanessa.""
I nodded.
"She's disappeared.""
"She's not answering my calls.""
I looked at him.
"Perhaps that's for the best.""
He rubbed his hands together.
"Mom, I know I've done terrible things.""
"Yes, Daniel. You have.""
"I want to fix this.""
I studied his face.
"How?""
He reached into his jacket and removed a folded piece of paper.
"I found this in Vanessa's office.""
I opened it.
It was a bank transfer authorization.
The amount was $180,000.
The recipient was an offshore company.
The transfer had been scheduled for the following morning.
I looked at him.
"What is this?""
"Vanessa was moving money out of the country.""
"Whose money?""
He hesitated.
"Money from Dad's company.""
James returned immediately.
"Where did you find this?""
"In Vanessa's laptop bag.""
"Did you access the account?""
Daniel shook his head.
"No. I just found the paperwork.""
James examined the authorization.
"Did you know about the transfer?""
Daniel looked away.
"Not this one.""
"Daniel.""
He finally looked up.
"Yes. I knew she was moving some money. I didn't know it was this much.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"How much did you help her move?""
He whispered, "About $70,000.""
I stared at him.
"You told me you were desperate because of debt. But you were helping her move your father's money?""
"I thought we'd pay it back.""
"With what?""
He had no answer.
James took the document.
"Daniel, you need to understand that cooperating now doesn't erase what you've already done. But preserving evidence and giving a truthful account may matter.""
Daniel nodded.
"I'll tell you everything.""
I looked at my son.
"Why didn't you come to me before?""
He started crying.
"Because I was ashamed.""
"Shame doesn't give you permission to steal.""
"I know.""
For a moment, I saw the little boy who used to run into my bedroom whenever he had a nightmare.
I wanted to comfort him.
But I couldn't.
Not yet.
Then Daniel said something that made me sit forward.
"Mom, Vanessa wasn't the person who came up with the plan to take your house.""
James froze.
"What do you mean?""
Daniel looked at the floor.
"She had help.""
"From whom?"" I asked.
He swallowed.
"Someone who knew about Dad's trust before we did.""
"Who?""
Daniel lifted his eyes.
"Your brother-in-law.""
I frowned.
"My brother-in-law?""
"Uncle Richard.""
My stomach dropped.
Richard Bennett was Robert's younger brother.
He lived in Raleigh and had attended Robert's funeral.
He had hugged me afterward and promised that our family would always look after me.
"Richard has been dead for six years," I whispered.
Daniel shook his head.
"Not Robert's brother. Your sister's husband.""
I felt the blood drain from my face.
My sister Helen had been married to Richard for thirty-two years.
He had been at my house the previous Christmas.
He had sat at Robert's table.
And according to Daniel, he had helped Vanessa plan the theft.
James immediately called Officer Reynolds.
But before he could explain, Daniel reached into his pocket again.
"There's something else.""
He placed a small photograph on the desk.
It showed Vanessa standing beside Richard outside a Charlotte law office.
The date was written on the back.
Three months before Robert died.
