Chapter 9: The Truth Robert Left Behind

The room went silent.

Killed.

The word echoed.

I looked at Thomas.

“You’re lying.””

He smiled.

“Are you sure?””

My fingers tightened around the notebook.

Robert died suddenly.

That was what everyone told me.

A heart attack.

A tragedy.

A terrible accident.

But Thomas Reed did not speak like a man making a random accusation.

He spoke like a man who knew exactly what he was saying.

Daniel looked at me.

“Mom…”

I ignored him.

“Why would I believe you?””

Thomas walked slowly toward the table.

“Because your husband left evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

He looked at the notebook.

“Evidence that someone close to him was involved.””

I felt anger rise.

“Do not speak about my husband like that.””

Thomas stopped.

Then he smiled slightly.

“There she is.””

“What?””

“The woman who sent powerful men to prison.””

For a moment, I saw the reason he was afraid of me.

Not because of my age.

Not because of my appearance.

Because he remembered who I was.

Thomas continued.

“You always believed numbers revealed the truth.””

“They do.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“Numbers reveal what people allow them to reveal.””

I stared at him.

“You’re trying to confuse me.””

“No.””

He looked toward Daniel.

“I’m trying to warn you.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“Warn her?””

Thomas nodded.

“She has no idea what your father discovered.””

I turned to Daniel.

“Did you know?””

He looked away.

That was enough.

“Daniel.””

He finally spoke.

“Dad left something behind.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“A file.””

“Where?””

He hesitated.

“Thomas has it.””

Thomas smiled.

“Not anymore.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What?””

Thomas’s expression changed.

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

That was interesting.

“You lost it?””

Thomas looked at Daniel.

“You were supposed to retrieve the notebook.””

Daniel stepped back.

“You lied to me.””

Thomas laughed quietly.

“No, Daniel. I gave you a chance.””

“A chance to do what?””

“To prove you were useful.””

Those words hurt Daniel.

I saw it.

Not because he was innocent.

He was not.

But because he finally understood what he had become.

A person Thomas Reed could throw away.

I looked at Thomas.

“Where is the file?””

He looked at me.

“You still think you’re in control.””

“I usually am.””

A small smile appeared on his face.

“Your confidence never changed.””

“Neither did your arrogance.””

For the first time, Thomas looked angry.

Only for a second.

Then he controlled it.

“I came here because I wanted to make a deal.””

I laughed.

“A deal?””

“Yes.””

“With me?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Daniel.

“After everything you did?””

Thomas smiled.

“Daniel did what he had to do.””

I turned toward my son.

Daniel looked ashamed.

But before he could speak, I raised my hand.

“Not now.””

He stopped.

Thomas continued.

“The file contains information that can destroy people.””

“People like you?””

“People much bigger than me.””

I studied him.

A man like Thomas never admitted weakness unless it was useful.

So why was he here?

Because he needed something.

“What do you want?””

Thomas looked at the notebook.

“Page 52.””

My stomach tightened.

“You don’t have it.””

“No.””

“Then why ask me?””

His smile returned.

“Because you are going to read it.””

The silence felt heavy.

I opened the notebook again.

Pages passed.

Forty-eight.

Forty-nine.

Fifty.

Fifty-one.

Then I reached fifty-two.

The moment I saw the first line, everything inside me stopped.

It was Robert’s handwriting.

But the sentence was not about Bellweather.

Not about Thomas.

Not about money.

It was about me.

*Eleanor, if you are reading this, it means I was not able to tell you the truth myself.*

My vision blurred.

I kept reading.

*The person who betrayed us is someone you trust.*

I looked up.

Daniel was staring at me.

Thomas was watching carefully.

I continued.

The next sentence was only six words.

But those six words changed everything.

*Your son knows more than he admits.*

I slowly lowered the notebook.

Daniel’s face went pale.

“Mom…”

I looked at him.

Not as his mother.

Not anymore.

As someone searching for the truth.

“What did your father mean?””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

And in that moment…

I knew.

May you like

Whatever secret Robert had hidden…

Daniel had been carrying it all along.
