Chapter 8: The Page That Changed Everything

The pages moved beneath my fingers.

Forty-two.

Forty-three.

Forty-four.

Daniel stood behind me.

Silent.

Waiting.

I reached page forty-seven.

And stopped.

The handwriting was Robert’s.

But the words were not what I expected.

*Thomas Reed did not act alone.*

I read the sentence again.

My breathing slowed.

For twenty-six years, I believed Bellweather was the work of greedy executives.

I believed I had uncovered the entire truth.

But Robert knew there was more.

I continued reading.

*The money trail leads higher than anyone realizes.*

My hands became cold.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

I looked at him.

“Why do you care?””

His eyes dropped.

“Because I think I know.””

I continued.

Robert had written names.

Dates.

Accounts.

Every detail carefully recorded.

He had spent years following the same patterns I once followed.

The difference was that he was not investigating a company.

He was investigating the people who survived after Bellweather collapsed.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Thomas Reed.

Another name appeared beneath it.

A name I knew.

A name that made my stomach tighten.

“Your father knew him?”” Daniel asked.

I looked at the page.

“Yes.””

Daniel sat down.

“Who?””

I did not answer immediately.

Because saying the name made it real.

“Charles Whitmore.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who is that?””

I looked at him.

“He was the man who controlled Bellweather’s financial network.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“But he was never charged.””

“Exactly.””

The room became quiet.

My entire career had been built around finding missing pieces.

And now I realized I had missed the biggest one.

Robert had not been investigating the fraud.

He had been investigating the people who escaped it.

A knock came from the front door.

Both of us froze.

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

“Did you tell anyone?””

“No.””

The knock came again.

Three slow knocks.

Not a neighbor.

Not a delivery person.

Someone who wanted to be heard.

I closed the notebook.

Daniel whispered:

“You need to hide that.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because if they know you have it, they’ll come for you.””

I stared at him.

“They already did.””

The door opened.

Not forced.

Unlocked.

Someone had a key.

My body went still.

A man stepped inside.

Older.

Well-dressed.

Gray hair.

A calm smile.

I knew him immediately.

Not from television.

Not from newspapers.

From evidence files.

Thomas Reed.

The man who disappeared twenty-six years ago.

Daniel looked terrified.

“Thomas…”

Thomas smiled.

“Daniel.””

Then he looked at me.

“Eleanor Vance.””

Hearing my name from his mouth sent a chill through me.

“I wondered when you would finally find the notebook.””

I held it tightly.

“You’ve been searching for this.””

He smiled.

“For years.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You said nobody would get hurt.””

Thomas looked at him.

Almost disappointed.

“My dear boy, people always get hurt when they make bad decisions.””

Daniel looked away.

I noticed something.

Thomas did not look at Daniel like a partner.

He looked at him like a tool.

And now that tool was broken.

I kept my voice steady.

“You used my son.””

Thomas smiled.

“I used everyone.””

That answer told me more than he intended.

“You never changed.””

His smile faded slightly.

“No, Eleanor. I improved.””

He looked around my home.

“Your husband almost ruined everything.””

I stepped forward.

“What did Robert know?””

Thomas looked at the notebook.

“He knew the truth.””

“What truth?””

He smiled.

“The truth that Bellweather was never the crime.””

I felt my heartbeat increase.

“Then what was?””

Thomas looked directly at me.

“The cover-up.””

Silence.

Daniel looked confused.

I did too.

Because after all these years, I realized something terrifying.

I had spent my career finding criminals.

But I never asked who was protecting them.

Thomas walked closer.

“Your husband discovered something before he died.””

My expression changed.

“What?””

Thomas smiled.

“Something you were never supposed to see.””

Then he pointed at the notebook.

“Page 52.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

“Because page 47 tells you who was involved.””

May you like

He paused.

“And page 52 tells you why your husband was killed.””
