Chapter 3: The Secret Inside the House

The judge granted a short recess.

Daniel walked out of the courtroom quickly.

Vanessa followed him.

They did not look like a loving couple anymore.

They looked like two people trying to escape a fire.

I remained seated.

My hands rested on my cane.

A young woman from the court staff approached me.

“Mrs. Vance?””

“Yes?””

She smiled softly.

“I just wanted to say… you handled that very calmly.””

I nodded.

“Anger makes people careless.””

She looked surprised.

“What does?””

I looked toward the hallway where my son disappeared.

“Anger.””

The truth was, I had been angry.

For months.

But anger was never my strongest weapon.

Facts were.

When the hearing resumed, Daniel returned with a different expression.

The confidence was gone.

His attorney held a new stack of papers.

Judge Mercer noticed immediately.

“Mr. Vance, is this related to the original petition?””

The attorney stood.

“Yes, Your Honor.””

“Explain.””

He looked uncomfortable.

“There are financial concerns regarding Mrs. Vance’s property.””

I almost laughed.

Financial concerns.

That was a phrase people used when they did not want to say greed.

The judge looked at me.

“Mrs. Vance?””

I opened my folder again.

“I believe the court should see the original property documents.””

Daniel stiffened.

“Original?””

“Yes.””

His eyes moved toward Vanessa.

That small movement told me everything.

They had not expected me to have them.

I placed the documents before the judge.

“My husband and I created a trust twenty years ago.””

Daniel frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because… because I handled the paperwork.””

Exactly.

That was the problem.

After my husband died, Daniel insisted on helping me organize my documents.

He said I was overwhelmed.

He said he was protecting me.

But while pretending to help, he copied everything.

He searched for anything valuable.

Anything he could control.

The judge reviewed the papers.

“These documents indicate the property cannot be transferred without Mrs. Vance’s approval.””

“Yes.””

Daniel’s attorney looked uncomfortable.

“Your Honor, there may have been misunderstandings.””

I looked at him.

“Misunderstandings do not change locks.””

Daniel looked down.

The judge turned a page.

Then another.

His expression became more serious.

“Mrs. Vance…”

“Yes?””

“There is something else here.””

I waited.

“The trust contains financial records.””

“Yes.””

“And these records show several withdrawals.””

I nodded.

“From my personal account.””

Daniel immediately spoke.

“Those were for her care.””

The judge looked at him.

“Were they?””

Daniel stopped.

I opened another folder.

“No.””

I placed several bank statements down.

“Those withdrawals were made after Daniel gained access to my accounts.””

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“Your Honor, this is getting out of control.””

The judge looked at her.

“Mrs. Vance, sit down.””

She slowly sat.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

I continued.

“The money was transferred into another account.””

The judge looked at the statement.

“Whose account?””

I turned the page.

“Daniel Vance.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“That doesn’t prove anything.””

“No?””

I pulled out one final document.

“A signature verification report.””

His expression froze.

The courtroom became silent.

The judge looked at the paper.

“Mrs. Vance, are you alleging your son forged your signature?””

I looked at Daniel.

The boy I raised.

The man who once held my hand crossing the street.

The man who now wanted to erase me.

“I am not alleging anything.””

I paused.

“I am presenting evidence.””

Daniel stood suddenly.

“You planned this?””

Everyone looked at him.

His voice cracked.

“You knew?””

I met his eyes.

“Yes.””

He stared.

“How long?””

I closed my folder.

“Long enough to know that you were never trying to save me.””

A silence filled the courtroom.

Then Judge Mercer looked at the documents again.

“Mrs. Vance…”

He lowered his voice.

“Why did you wait until today to reveal all of this?””

I looked toward Daniel.

Because that was the question everyone wanted answered.

Why had I stayed quiet?

Why had I let them believe they were winning?

I reached into my bag and removed one final envelope.

The envelope I had kept hidden since the day Daniel changed my locks.

I placed it on the table.

“Because I was waiting for the right moment.””

Judge Mercer looked at it.

“What is inside?””

I looked at my son.

“The reason Daniel was so desperate to own my house.””

Daniel’s face went completely pale.

Because he knew.

Inside that envelope was the truth about what he had done after taking my husband’s papers.

And when the judge opened it, everyone in that courtroom would finally learn who Daniel Vance had been working with.
