Chapter 10: The Son Who Knew the Truth

Daniel did not speak.

That silence hurt more than any confession could have.

I had spent my entire life believing that my son was simply lost.

A selfish man.

A greedy man.

A man who made terrible choices.

But now I wondered if there had been something darker hiding beneath everything.

I closed Robert’s notebook.

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

His eyes were full of fear.

“Mom…”

“Tell me the truth.””

Thomas stood quietly in the corner.

Watching.

Waiting.

I hated that he was enjoying this.

But I needed answers.

Daniel looked at the floor.

“I didn’t know everything.””

I said nothing.

He continued.

“When Dad died, I found a box in his office.””

My heart tightened.

“What was inside?””

“Documents.””

“From Bellweather?””

He nodded.

“And something else.””

“What?””

Daniel swallowed.

“A letter.””

The room felt colder.

“A letter from your father?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

Daniel looked away.

Because the answer was already there.

“You read it.””

He nodded.

“I was scared.””

I stared at him.

“Scared of what?””

He looked at Thomas.

“That I was already involved.””

Thomas’s expression remained calm.

But I noticed something.

He was listening carefully.

Daniel continued.

“After Dad died, I found out he had been tracking Thomas.””

He looked at the notebook.

“He knew someone from Bellweather was still moving money.””

“And?””

“And he thought someone close to him was helping.””

My voice became quiet.

“Who?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I thought it was me.””

I froze.

“What?””

He shook his head quickly.

“Not because I helped him. Because Dad’s notes mentioned my name.””

I looked at Thomas.

Then back at Daniel.

“Explain.””

Daniel took a breath.

“Dad wrote that someone had used my accounts.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

“He believed someone was moving money through my name.””

I looked at Daniel carefully.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought you would think I was part of it.””

I almost laughed.

A painful laugh.

“You were afraid I would think you were guilty?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“You already thought I was.””

I stared at him.

“You hurt me.””

His eyes filled slightly.

“I know.””

“You lied about me.””

“I know.””

“You tried to take my home.””

His voice broke.

“I know.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Thomas interrupted.

“This emotional reunion is meaningless.””

I turned toward him.

“You knew about this.””

“Yes.””

“And you let him believe he was trapped.””

Thomas smiled.

“Because fear makes people easier to control.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You used me.””

Thomas shrugged.

“You were desperate.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You ruined my life.””

“No.””

Thomas’s voice became cold.

“You ruined your own life when you chose greed over loyalty.””

That sentence hit harder than Thomas probably intended.

Because it was true.

Daniel lowered his head.

I looked at my son.

The pain was still there.

The betrayal was still there.

But now there was something else.

A question.

“How much did you know about Thomas?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“Enough to know he was dangerous.””

“Yet you worked with him.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His eyes met mine.

“Because he threatened me.””

I waited.

“He showed me documents.””

“What documents?””

“Records proving Dad had investigated him.””

I looked at Robert’s notebook.

“And?””

“He said if I didn’t help him find the evidence, he would make sure everyone believed I was responsible.””

Daniel looked broken.

“I thought I could fix it.””

“You thought you could control him.””

He nodded.

“I was wrong.””

Thomas smiled.

“Everyone says that eventually.””

I looked at him.

“Where is Robert’s file?””

Thomas’s smile faded.

“I don’t have it.””

“Then who does?””

He looked at me.

“You.””

I frowned.

“No.””

“Yes.””

He stepped closer.

“Your husband was smarter than anyone realized.””

I remembered Robert.

His quiet nature.

His patience.

His habit of hiding important papers inside ordinary things.

Thomas continued.

“He knew someone would come looking.””

My eyes moved around the room.

The study.

The shelves.

The old furniture.

The things everyone ignored.

Robert loved hiding things in plain sight.

I looked at the notebook.

Then suddenly remembered.

The painting.

The one above his desk.

The one he always said had “character.””

I walked toward it.

Daniel followed.

“Mom?””

I removed the frame from the wall.

Behind it was a small opening.

Thomas stopped smiling.

Inside was a thin black folder.

Nobody moved.

I pulled it out.

Daniel whispered:

“That’s it.””

Thomas’s face changed.

For the first time…

he looked afraid.

I opened the folder.

And saw the first page.

A list of names.

At the top was a name I never expected.

My own son.

Daniel Vance.

But beneath it was another note.

Written by Robert.

*Daniel is not the betrayer. He is the final witness.*

I looked at my son.

Then at Thomas.

May you like

And I realized…

someone had spent years trying to make me hate the wrong person.
