Chapter 6: The Missing Forty-Six Years

Margaret closed the door behind her.

Nobody spoke.

She looked at my injured ankle first.

Then the blood on my hands.

Then the letter.

Her eyes stopped there.

“You found it.””

I nodded.

“You knew about this?””

“I helped your father create it.””

Richard stood.

“You're Margaret Vale.””

She turned toward him.

“And you're Richard.””

He went pale.

“You know me?””

“I've known about you for thirty-one years.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Margaret pulled out a chair.

“Sit.””

“I've been sitting long enough.””

She studied me.

Then nodded.

“You sound like your father.””

I held up the letter.

“Tell me the truth.””

“I will.””

“Everything.””

Margaret glanced toward the federal agents outside.

Then back at me.

“Your father suspected someone inside the family would eventually try to take control of Thorne Meridian.””

“He suspected Julian?””

“No.””

She paused.

“He suspected Richard.””

My stomach dropped.

Richard whispered, “That's impossible.””

Margaret looked at him.

“Is it?””

I turned toward my husband.

“You knew my father?””

Richard shook his head.

“Not well.””

“Margaret?””

She answered for him.

“They met before your wedding.””

I stared at Richard.

“You told me you met him once.””

“I did.””

“You said he interviewed you because he wanted to make sure I was marrying the right man.””

“That was true.””

“Then why does Margaret know otherwise?””

Richard's face tightened.

“Because your father didn't trust me.””

Margaret leaned forward.

“He had reason.””

I felt the room become colder.

“Why?””

She reached into her bag and removed a photograph.

She placed it on the table.

It showed my father standing beside a younger Richard.

But there was someone else in the photograph.

A man I had never seen before.

Margaret pointed to him.

“This man handled your father's overseas accounts.””

I stared at the photograph.

“Who is he?””

“Daniel Cross.””

The name meant nothing.

Until Margaret continued.

“Daniel was involved in a financial operation that nearly destroyed your father's company.””

Richard looked at the picture.

“I thought Daniel was dead.””

Margaret's eyes hardened.

“He isn't.””

I looked at Richard.

“Did you know?””

He swallowed.

“Yes.””

My voice became quiet.

“How long?””

“Years.””

“How many years?””

He couldn't answer.

I stepped closer.

“Forty-six years?””

Richard looked at me.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

“You married me while hiding this.””

“I loved you.””

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you help Julian?””

Richard's eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was trapped.””

Margaret shook her head.

“No.””

Richard looked at her.

“You were greedy.””

His face hardened.

“You don't know what happened.””

“I know exactly what happened.””

Margaret turned toward me.

“Your husband didn't lose thirty-eight million dollars gambling.””

Richard closed his eyes.

I felt my pulse stop.

“What did he do?””

“He invested it.””

“In what?””

Margaret looked at me.

“Daniel Cross's company.””

The name struck me like a physical blow.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel promised Richard access to something your father had hidden.””

“What?””

Margaret reached into her bag again.

This time she removed a thick folder.

She opened it.

Inside were old corporate documents.

Bank records.

Contracts.

Photographs.

And a document bearing my father's signature.

Margaret pointed to one paragraph.

“This is the real purpose of the Meridian Legacy Trust.””

I read it.

My father's words were precise.

*Control shall remain with Eleanor Thorne unless her life is threatened or she is declared legally incapacitated.*

I looked up.

“Unless my life is threatened?””

Margaret nodded.

“That was the safeguard.””

“Why?””

“Because your father knew someone might try to force you out.””

Richard whispered, “I didn't know that.””

Margaret ignored him.

“He also created a second clause.””

She turned the page.

My heart began pounding.

“What clause?””

“If Eleanor is deliberately harmed in an attempt to seize control, every protected asset automatically transfers to an independent trustee.””

I stared at her.

“Who is the trustee?””

Margaret smiled sadly.

“Me.””

Richard stumbled backward.

“No.””

Margaret looked at him.

“Yes.””

I slowly understood.

Julian hadn't just failed to take my company.

He had triggered the exact protection my father had built forty-six years earlier.

My father's entire plan had been waiting for this moment.

But there was still one question.

I looked at Margaret.

“Why did my father expect someone to hurt me?””

She closed the folder.

“Because he knew something about the man you married.””

Richard's face went white.

Margaret reached into her bag and removed one final photograph.

She placed it in front of me.

It was a wedding photograph.

My wedding.

I was twenty-six.

Richard was twenty-nine.

My father stood behind us, smiling.

But someone had been cropped from the original picture.

Margaret slid another photograph beside it.

The uncropped version.

A man stood just behind Richard.

Daniel Cross.

And beneath the photograph, written in my father's handwriting, were six words:

*He was Richard's partner before you.*

I looked at my husband.

He didn't deny it.

Then my phone vibrated in my hand.

A new message appeared from the unknown number.

*Eleanor, Margaret is telling you only half the truth.*

I looked up.

May you like

Margaret had gone completely still.

And for the first time since she entered the lodge, she looked frightened.
