Chapter 3: The Second Plan

For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything.

The jungle outside seemed to vanish.

All I could hear was my own heartbeat.

“They weren't going to let you leave the country alive.””

Richard's words stayed suspended in the room.

I looked at Julian.

He didn't deny them.

That was enough.

I sat down again.

“Tell me everything.””

Richard rubbed both hands over his face.

“Eleanor…”

“Everything.””

Julian stepped forward.

“Dad, stop.””

Richard looked at him.

“No.””

It was the first time my husband had contradicted our son.

Julian's expression hardened.

Richard continued.

“The original plan was supposed to happen at the river.””

“I know.””

“If you survived the fall…”

He swallowed.

“There was another arrangement.””

“With whom?””

Richard looked away.

“Local transport.””

My skin went cold.

“They were supposed to find you?””

Richard nodded.

“And?””

Julian interrupted.

“That doesn't matter anymore.””

I looked at him.

“It matters to me.””

He slammed his fist onto the table.

“You should have died!””

Celeste gasped.

“Julian!””

He stared at me.

For one brief moment, I saw the little boy who used to crawl into my bed during thunderstorms.

Then he was gone.

Only the man remained.

“You were never going to give me the company,” he said.

“You never asked for it.””

“I begged.””

“You demanded.””

“I earned it!””

“You earned a salary.””

His face twisted.

“You have no idea what I've sacrificed.””

I stood slowly.

“And you have no idea what I sacrificed for you.””

He laughed bitterly.

“You mean the company?””

“No.””

I pointed toward Richard.

“Your father.””

Richard lowered his eyes.

I continued.

“When he lost his job in 1998, I worked sixteen-hour days.””

Richard flinched.

“When you needed surgery at eleven, I postponed opening our London office.””

Julian's face changed slightly.

“When you wanted to attend Columbia, I sold shares I had promised myself I would never sell.””

He said nothing.

“I gave you everything except the one thing you never had a right to.””

“What?””

“Me.””

Silence.

I looked at Martin on the laptop.

“Martin, I want every document Julian submitted tonight.””

“You'll have them.””

“And contact our outside counsel.””

Julian stepped forward.

“You can't.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He pointed at me.

“Because you're forgetting something.””

“What?””

“You're not the only one with access to the company's records.””

My stomach tightened.

He pulled his phone from his pocket.

A notification appeared.

Then another.

Then another.

Martin's expression changed on the laptop.

“Eleanor…”

“What?””

“I just received an alert.””

“From whom?””

“The New York office.””

I waited.

Martin looked at his screen.

“Someone has initiated a transfer from the Thorne Meridian reserve account.””

My heart dropped.

“How much?””

“Two hundred million dollars.””

Celeste stepped backward.

“Julian…”

He didn't look at her.

I stared at my son.

“You moved two hundred million?””

“No.””

Martin interrupted.

“The transfer is being processed through an authorized executive account.””

I looked at Julian.

He smiled.

“I told you.””

“What?””

“I didn't need you to sign everything.””

Richard whispered, “Julian, stop.””

Julian ignored him.

“The company has been preparing for this for months.””

My mind raced.

I had designed Thorne Meridian's internal controls myself.

No single executive could move that amount without a secondary authorization.

Unless—

I looked at Richard.

“Who else has signing authority?””

He didn't answer.

I already knew.

My husband.

The man who had just watched me drown.

I turned toward him.

“You signed it.””

Richard's shoulders collapsed.

“I thought it would save us.””

“Save us from what?””

He looked at me.

“Our debts.””

I froze.

“What debts?””

Richard's eyes filled with tears.

Julian spoke quietly.

“Dad lost money.””

“How much?””

Richard whispered the number.

“Thirty-eight million.””

I stared at him.

“For how long?””

“Three years.””

I felt something inside me break.

Not because of the money.

Because forty-six years of marriage had apparently contained a secret life I had never seen.

Richard reached for me.

I stepped away.

“Don't touch me.””

“Eleanor, I was going to fix it.””

“With my company?””

“Yes.””

“With my death?””

“No.””

“Then why did you watch?””

He had no answer.

Julian suddenly grabbed his phone again.

“Enough.””

He turned toward the door.

I watched him carefully.

“Where are you going?””

“To finish what I started.””

He reached for the handle.

Then Martin spoke from the laptop.

“Julian, you might want to stop.””

Julian turned.

Martin held up a document.

“Because the transfer you initiated just triggered the company's emergency fraud protocol.””

Julian froze.

Martin smiled faintly.

“Eleanor designed it.””

I felt my breath catch.

“What does it do?””

Martin looked directly at me.

“It doesn't just freeze the money.””

He paused.

“It sends every hidden transaction, every authorization, and every internal recording directly to federal investigators.””

Julian's face went white.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.
