Chapter 14: The Safe

We reached New York before sunrise.

The FBI had secured Thorne Meridian's headquarters, but the building felt strangely familiar.

I hadn't walked through those doors since the night before our trip.

Now federal agents moved through the lobby carrying boxes of documents.

Martin met us at the elevator.

“Eleanor.””

“Where is Julian?””

“In custody.””

“Celeste?””

“Being questioned.””

“And Richard?””

Martin's expression changed.

“We don't know.””

My chest tightened.

“My grandson?””

“Missing.””

I closed my eyes.

Margaret touched my shoulder.

“We'll find him.””

The elevator opened.

We entered the executive floor.

My father's portrait hung at the end of the hallway.

I stared at it.

The painting showed him sitting behind his desk, one hand resting on a stack of documents.

I walked toward it.

Daniel followed.

“Your mother said the safe was behind the portrait.””

I pushed the frame.

Nothing.

I checked the wall.

Then I noticed something.

A small brass indentation beneath the frame.

I pressed it.

The portrait swung outward.

Behind it was a steel door.

Martin stared.

“How did you know?””

“I didn't.””

I looked at Daniel.

“My mother did.””

Margaret handed me the brass key.

I inserted it.

The lock clicked.

Inside was a narrow vault.

Boxes lined the shelves.

Bank records.

Property deeds.

Original stock certificates.

Photographs.

And one black ledger.

I picked it up.

My father's name was embossed on the cover.

Daniel opened it.

“Look.””

Page after page showed transfers.

Millions.

Hundreds of millions.

Names of shell companies.

Foreign accounts.

Secret payments.

Then I saw Richard's name.

My hands shook.

He had been receiving payments for decades.

Not thirty-eight million.

Not seventeen.

The total was nearly eighty million dollars.

I stared at the number.

“He lied about everything.””

Martin took photographs of the pages.

Then Daniel found something else.

A letter.

Addressed to *Victor Hale*.

Dated two days before my father's death.

Daniel read it aloud.

“Once Eleanor is married, Richard will remain loyal.””

I felt sick.

Another line:

“Julian will be easier to control when he is older.””

Margaret covered her mouth.

My father had planned Julian's future before my son could even walk.

Then Daniel turned the page.

At the bottom was a signature.

Not my father's.

Victor's.

But beneath it was another name.

*Richard Thorne.*

I stared at the signature.

Then I noticed a handwritten note.

*If Eleanor survives, activate the final transfer.*

Martin looked up.

“What final transfer?””

I turned the page.

There was a list of assets.

Thorne Meridian.

Private accounts.

Real estate.

And one final line:

*Control beneficiary: Julian Thorne.*

I felt the room go silent.

The trust had been designed to protect me.

But someone had created a second document designed to override it.

“When was this filed?””

Martin checked the date.

“Three months ago.””

That was when Richard found the letter.

That was when Julian began pressing me.

That was when they planned the trip.

Everything connected.

Then my phone rang.

This time, the caller ID showed Richard.

I answered.

“Where is my grandson?””

His voice was broken.

“Eleanor, I need you to listen.””

“Where is he?””

“He's with me.””

“Put him on.””

A pause.

Then a small voice.

“Grandma?””

My eyes filled.

“Are you okay?””

“Yes.””

Richard spoke again.

“I didn't take him to hurt him.””

“Then why?””

“Because Victor has people everywhere.””

“You're working for Victor.””

“No.””

“You signed the transfers.””

“I was trying to stop him.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You pushed me toward the river.””

“I know.””

“You watched me fall.””

“I know.””

“Why should I believe anything you say?””

“Because I'm going to tell you where Victor is.””

I froze.

“Where?””

“Your father's old estate.””

“The one in Connecticut?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because that's where this began.””

I looked at Daniel.

Richard continued.

“Bring the original trust.””

“Why?””

“Because Victor believes the trust contains something more valuable than the company.””

“What?””

Richard's breathing became uneven.

“The identity of the real owner.””

The call ended.

I looked at the documents.

Then at my brother.

Daniel whispered, “We need to go.””

Martin stepped forward.

“Eleanor, the FBI will handle this.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“You can't go alone.””

“I won't.””

Daniel picked up the trust documents.

“We're going.””

Margaret looked at me.

“If Victor is there, this could be a trap.””

I stared at my father's portrait.

“Everything has been a trap.””

Then I looked toward the elevator.

“But this time, they don't know what I know.””

We reached the lobby.

Outside, a black SUV waited.

The driver stepped out.

“Mrs. Thorne?””

“Yes.””

He handed me an envelope.

“Someone asked me to give you this.””

I opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

My grandson.

Standing beside Richard.

And behind them—

Victor Hale.

May you like

On the back were five words:

*Come alone, Eleanor. Or he dies.*
