Chapter 9: The Truth Behind Vanessa’s Tears
I watched the video one more time.
Vanessa sitting on Noah’s bed.
Holding the envelope.
Crying.
Apologizing.
It didn’t fit the person I thought I knew.
For weeks, I had seen her as a villain.
Someone who carefully planned every cruel moment.
Someone who wanted my son gone.
And maybe some of that was true.
But the video showed something complicated.
Someone who had done terrible things.
And someone who knew she had done them.
The next morning, I asked Vanessa to meet me.
Not because I trusted her.
Because I needed the truth.
We met at the same coffee shop where I had spoken with Dr. Collins.
She looked exhausted.
No makeup.
No carefully arranged appearance.
Just a woman who looked like she hadn’t slept.
“You saw the video.””
It wasn’t a question.
I nodded.
“Why did you apologize to Noah?””
She looked down.
“Because I hurt him.””
The honesty surprised me.
“Why?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I was jealous.””
I waited.
She continued.
“I hated that he had a place in your heart that nobody could touch.””
I shook my head.
“You didn’t hate him.””
She looked up.
“I did.””
The admission shocked me.
“But not because of him.””
She wiped her eyes.
“Because I hated myself.””
I stayed silent.
She took a breath.
“My whole life, I felt like I was the person people settled for.””
“Vanessa…”
“No. Let me finish.””
Her voice cracked.
“When I met you, I thought I finally had something real.””
She looked at the table.
“Then I saw how much you loved Noah.””
I frowned.
“That should have made you happy.””
“I know.””
She looked ashamed.
“But instead, I felt invisible.””
I didn’t respond.
Because nothing she said excused what she did.
But I wanted to understand.
“The fake pregnancy.””
She closed her eyes.
“That was supposed to make me feel like I belonged.””
“You made everyone believe you were carrying a child.””
“I know.””
“You hurt Noah.””
“I know.””
She started crying.
“I know.””
The repetition sounded different.
Not defensive.
Broken.
I leaned forward.
“Why did you take the envelope?””
She looked at me.
“Because I wanted to destroy the last thing connecting Noah’s pain to me.””
“What?””
She swallowed.
“When Noah gave it to me, he trusted me.””
My jaw tightened.
“And you betrayed him.””
“Yes.””
The word came immediately.
No excuses.
No explanation.
Just yes.
Then she reached into her bag.
She placed another envelope on the table.
“This is yours.””
I didn’t touch it.
“What is it?””
“A letter.””
“From who?””
She looked at me.
“Your first wife.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“She wrote it before she died.””
I stared at the envelope.
“Why do you have this?””
“Because Noah found it years ago.””
“And?””
“And he gave it to me because he thought I was family.””
I felt sick.
She had been trusted by my son.
And she had used that trust.
“What does the letter say?””
Vanessa pushed it toward me.
“I don’t know.””
I looked at her.
“You never opened it?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Why?””
Her voice became quiet.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She looked down.
“That it would prove I never deserved to be part of your family.””
I stared at the envelope.
A letter from the woman who had loved my son first.
A message written before everything changed.
I reached for it.
My fingers touched the paper.
Then my phone rang.
It was my mother.
I answered immediately.
“Mom?””
Her voice was shaking.
“Ethan…”
“What happened?””
A pause.
Then she whispered:
“Noah is gone.””
My entire body froze.
“What?””
“I woke up and he wasn’t here.””
I stood up so fast the chair moved.
“Did you check outside?””
“Yes.””
“Call the police.””
My mother’s voice broke.
“Ethan…”
“What?””
“We found something.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
She whispered:
“A note on his pillow.””
I felt the room spin.
“What does it say?””
Silence.
Then my mother read the first line.
“Daddy, I’m leaving because I don’t want to be the reason you lose Vanessa.””
I couldn’t breathe.
May you like
Because my son hadn’t run away from home.
He had run away to protect me.
