Chapter 1: The Belly That Fell Apart

The sound of a six-year-old boy crying at a family dinner was something I never thought I would hear because of a secret my own wife had been hiding from all of us.

The moment the fake pregnancy belly hit the floor, I knew my family was about to change forever.

The room went silent.

Not the normal silence that happens when someone drops a glass or says something awkward.

It was the kind of silence where everyone stops breathing because they know something impossible just happened.

The broken balloon rolled across the hardwood floor, stopping near my mother’s chair.

Everyone stared at the small needle still clutched in my son Noah’s trembling hand.

My wife, Vanessa, stood frozen beside the table.

Then she screamed.

“What did you do?!””

Noah’s face turned pale.

His little fingers opened, and the needle dropped onto the floor.

“I didn’t hurt the baby,” he whispered.

That sentence broke something inside me.

I pushed my chair back so quickly it almost fell.

“Noah.””

I rushed toward him and pulled him away from Vanessa.

“Buddy, look at me. Are you okay?””

He nodded, but tears were already running down his cheeks.

“I didn’t want to hurt anyone, Daddy.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward, one hand covering her stomach.

“You saw what he did, right?”” she said, looking around the table.

“He stabbed my belly.””

My family looked horrified.

My mother covered her mouth.

My brother Marcus shook his head.

“Ethan, what is happening?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I was staring at Noah.

And I noticed something I couldn’t ignore.

He wasn’t looking at Vanessa.

He wasn’t looking at the fake baby bump.

He was looking at me like he was afraid I would be angry.

“Come with me,” I whispered.

I took him into the hallway while everyone stayed behind.

The second we were alone, his shoulders started shaking.

“Buddy,” I said softly, kneeling down.

“Why did you do that?””

He wiped his face with his sleeve.

“I wanted to know.””

“Know what?””

His voice became smaller.

“If there was really a baby.””

My stomach tightened.

“What are you talking about?””

Noah looked toward the dining room.

Then he whispered the words that made my blood run cold.

“Because she takes it off when you leave.””

For a moment, I thought I misunderstood him.

“What?””

“The baby belly,” he said.

“She takes it off.””

I stood there, staring at my son.

“Noah, that’s not something you should make up.””

“I’m not making it up!””

His voice cracked.

“She told me not to tell you.””

The hallway suddenly felt colder.

“Who told you?””

He looked scared to say her name.

“Vanessa.””

I felt my chest tighten.

Vanessa had been my wife for three years.

When she told me she was pregnant, I was shocked.

Not because I didn’t want another child.

Because we had been trying for months.

When she showed me the pregnancy test, she cried.

I cried.

We called our families.

She started posting pictures online.

She shared updates about “our little miracle.””

Everyone celebrated.

But looking back, there had always been strange moments.

She never went to doctor appointments with me.

She always said the clinic only allowed patients.

She avoided changing clothes around me.

She wore loose sweaters even when the weather was warm.

And whenever Noah asked questions, Vanessa would smile too quickly.

“Soon you’ll be a big brother.””

But Noah never smiled.

I thought he was just adjusting.

I thought he was afraid of losing attention.

Now I wasn’t so sure.

I walked back into the dining room.

Vanessa immediately approached me.

“What did he tell you?””

Her voice was calm, but her eyes weren’t.

I looked at her.

“What did you tell Noah?””

She laughed nervously.

“Seriously? You’re believing a six-year-old over your wife?””

Before I could respond, Noah appeared behind me.

His tiny voice filled the room.

“She said Daddy would send me away if I told.””

Nobody moved.

My mother’s face changed.

Marcus stopped breathing.

Vanessa’s expression completely disappeared.

“What?””

I turned slowly toward my wife.

“What did he just say?””

She shook her head.

“He’s confused.””

“Noah,” I said gently.

“Tell me exactly what happened.””

He held onto my shirt.

“She said when the baby comes, you won’t need me anymore.””

My heart sank.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“That is ridiculous.””

But Noah continued.

“She said if I tell anyone, Daddy will think I’m a bad kid.””

I looked at Vanessa.

For the first time in our marriage, I didn’t recognize the person standing in front of me.

The woman I trusted.

The woman who hugged my son.

The woman who claimed she was carrying our child.

Something inside me said there was more.

And I needed to find out.

I walked upstairs.

Vanessa followed.

“Ethan, stop.””

I kept walking.

“Don’t open that door.””

I froze.

Not because she told me to stop.

Because of the fear in her voice.

I reached for the closet handle.

And when I opened it, I saw something that changed everything.

A fake pregnancy belly.

Medical-looking cushions.

And a folder with my wife’s name written across the top.

But the documents inside weren’t what shocked me.

It was the second folder underneath.

The one labeled:

“NOAH.””
