Chapter 3: The Question Noah Never Answered

After Vanessa left, nobody spoke for almost a full minute.

The house that had always felt warm suddenly felt unfamiliar.

The same walls.

The same furniture.

The same family photos.

But everything had changed.

My mother was the first person to move.

She walked toward Noah and hugged him.

“Sweetheart, nobody is angry with you.””

Noah didn’t respond.

He just stared at the floor.

That scared me more than his crying.

Because Noah was usually full of questions.

He was the kid who talked through movies.

The kid who asked why the moon followed our car.

The kid who laughed so loudly that our neighbors knew when he got a new toy.

But that night, he looked like someone who had been carrying a secret too heavy for his little shoulders.

I knelt in front of him.

“Buddy.””

He looked up.

“Did Vanessa tell the truth?””

His eyes moved away.

“What part?””

My heart sank.

“The part about before she came into our lives.””

He became quiet.

“Noah, I’m not mad.””

His lips trembled.

“I thought you would be.””

“Why?””

“Because she said you would.””

I felt anger rise inside me.

But I pushed it down.

“Tell me what happened.””

He hugged his stuffed dinosaur tighter.

“When Mommy left…”

The room went still.

My son rarely talked about his biological mother.

She had passed away when he was three.

I had always been careful not to force conversations.

Noah continued.

“I was scared.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

“And then Vanessa came.””

His fingers squeezed the dinosaur.

“She was nice at first.””

That surprised me.

“What changed?””

He looked toward the stairs.

“She said I needed to understand something.””

“What?””

“That Daddy needed a new family.””

My chest tightened.

“When did she say that?””

“When you were at work.””

I closed my eyes.

I had spent so many evenings believing Vanessa was helping me.

I thought she was comforting Noah.

I thought she was trying to build a relationship with him.

Instead, she had been saying things behind my back.

“What else?””

Noah hesitated.

Then whispered:

“She said babies need real families.””

My hands curled into fists.

“She told you that?””

He nodded.

“I asked if I was still your family.””

My eyes burned.

“What did she say?””

He looked at me.

“She said… sometimes people have to leave when they become a problem.””

My mother covered her mouth.

Marcus looked away.

I pulled Noah into my arms.

“I’m sorry.””

He started crying against my shoulder.

“I thought if she had a baby, you would send me away.””

The words destroyed me.

Because my son wasn’t trying to hurt Vanessa.

He was trying to prove he still belonged.

A few hours later, after Noah finally fell asleep, I sat alone at the kitchen table.

The folder was still there.

I opened it again.

This time, I looked closer.

The notes weren’t just about Noah.

There were notes about me too.

“Ethan is becoming emotionally attached.””

“Need to create distance between father and son.””

“New child will strengthen bond.””

I felt sick.

She hadn’t just faked a pregnancy.

She had been planning a life where Noah became the outsider.

My phone suddenly rang.

I looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me answer.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Is this Ethan Carter?””

“Yes.””

There was a pause.

Then she said:

“My name is Dr. Collins.””

My stomach tightened.

The same name from the email.

“How do you know my name?””

“I think you need to hear the truth about Vanessa.””

I stood up.

“What truth?””

The woman took a breath.

“Your wife contacted me months ago.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“For what?””

Her answer was quiet.

“She wanted advice on how to make a father choose his new family over his first child.””

I felt the room spin.

“Why are you telling me this?””

Another pause.

Then Dr. Collins said something that made my blood freeze.

“Because Ethan… Vanessa wasn’t only hiding a fake pregnancy from you.””

I stopped breathing.

“What else was she hiding?””

Her voice dropped.

May you like

“She had another plan for Noah.””

And then the call ended.
