Chapter 5: The Night Noah Remembered
I found Noah at my mother’s house.
The second I saw him sitting on the couch, I felt relief.
Then I saw his face.
He knew something was wrong.
“Daddy?””
I walked over and hugged him.
“You’re okay.””
He nodded.
“Grandma came to get me.””
I looked at my mother.
“She said Vanessa was scary.””
My mother’s expression hardened.
“She called me.””
“What?””
“She said Noah needed space.””
I frowned.
“Vanessa called you?””
My mother nodded.
“She tried to make it sound like she was protecting him.””
I looked at Noah.
“Buddy, did Vanessa say anything before Grandma came?””
His eyes moved away.
That was enough.
“Noah.””
He hugged his dinosaur tighter.
“She told me you were going to ask me about Mommy.””
The room went silent.
I sat beside him.
“Why would she say that?””
He whispered,
“Because she said I had to tell you the truth.””
My chest tightened.
“What truth?””
He looked terrified.
“She said I made Mommy leave.””
The words hit me like a punch.
My mother immediately stood.
“That’s enough.””
But Noah grabbed my hand.
“No, Daddy. I have to tell you.””
I forced myself to stay calm.
“Tell me.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“That night Mommy was sick.””
I nodded slowly.
I remembered.
The hospital.
The rain.
The phone call.
The worst day of my life.
“I was little,” Noah whispered.
“Yes.””
“I was scared.””
“You were.””
He looked down.
“Mommy told me to get her medicine.””
My breathing stopped.
“She was lying on the couch?””
He nodded.
“I brought the bottle.””
I closed my eyes.
I remembered that night.
I remembered doctors telling me her condition had gotten worse.
I remembered holding Noah while he cried.
“What happened next?””
He wiped his cheeks.
“I spilled water.””
“That’s okay.””
“But Mommy got upset.””
I looked at him.
“Upset?””
“She said I didn’t do anything wrong.””
His voice became smaller.
“But Vanessa said I made Mommy sad.””
My entire body froze.
“What?””
Noah nodded.
“She said if I was better, Mommy would still be here.””
My mother covered her mouth.
I couldn’t speak.
For years, my son had carried guilt that never belonged to him.
And Vanessa knew.
She knew exactly where to hurt him.
I pulled him close.
“Buddy, listen to me.””
He looked up.
“Your mommy loved you.””
His tears fell.
“She did?””
“More than anything.””
“Then why did Vanessa say…”
“Because Vanessa was wrong.””
The words came out stronger than I expected.
That night, after Noah fell asleep at my mother’s house, I returned home.
Vanessa was there.
Standing in the living room.
Waiting.
“You talked to Collins.””
It wasn’t a question.
I stared at her.
“You blamed my son for his mother’s death.””
Her face changed.
“I never said that.””
“You did.””
She crossed her arms.
“He needed to understand consequences.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“He was three years old.””
“He was old enough to understand responsibility.””
I stared at her.
And finally, I understood.
The fake pregnancy wasn’t about wanting a baby.
It was about replacing Noah.
She wanted a reason to push him away.
A reason everyone would accept.
I took a step closer.
“You were never trying to build a family.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You don’t know what it’s like.””
“What?””
“To watch your husband love someone who will always come before you.””
I shook my head.
“That’s my son.””
“And I wanted a child of my own.””
“You could have told me.””
“I did.””
“No.””
I pointed upstairs.
“You created a fake baby.””
For the first time, she looked ashamed.
But only for a second.
Then her expression hardened.
“You think you know everything?””
I stayed silent.
She smiled.
“Ask your mother what happened after Noah was born.””
My heart sank.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa picked up her purse.
“You’re so sure I’m the monster.””
She walked toward the door.
“But maybe you never noticed the truth because everyone protected Noah.””
May you like
The door closed.
And I stood there wondering what secret from my son’s past Vanessa was about to use against us next.
