Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Secret

The knocking continued.

Three slow knocks.

Then silence.

Ellis knew we were inside.

I could feel it.

The room suddenly felt smaller. The walls seemed closer. Even the sound of my own breathing felt too loud.

Richard stood frozen near the window, staring at the driveway.

“Who is with him?”” I whispered.

His jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand what you’ve stepped into.””

I looked at him.

“I understand that my eleven-year-old son was forced to choose between his parents in court. I understand that my ex-husband lied about money. And I understand that someone is now chasing my son because he tried to help me.””

Richard looked away.

For the first time, I saw something I never expected from Ellis’s father.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Another knock.

This time louder.

“Sabrina,” Ellis called through the door.

“I know you’re in there.””

Richard grabbed my arm.

“You need to hide.””

I pulled away.

“No.””

His eyes widened.

“No?””

“I spent fifteen years hiding my feelings. I stayed quiet when Ellis made decisions without me. I stayed quiet when he convinced my son I wasn’t enough.””

I looked toward the door.

“I’m done hiding.””

Richard stared at me.

Then he slowly nodded.

“You sound like someone who finally knows the truth.””

The door opened.

Not because we allowed it.

Because Richard unlocked it.

Ellis stood outside.

Perfect suit.

Perfect hair.

Perfect smile.

But this time, I saw something different.

Panic.

Behind him stood another man.

Older.

Thin.

With cold eyes that immediately went to me.

Richard’s expression hardened.

“Victor.””

The older man smiled.

“Richard.””

I looked between them.

“You know each other?””

Ellis stepped inside.

“Sabrina, give me the card.””

I laughed.

“That’s all you have to say?””

His face tightened.

“You don’t know what you’re holding.””

“No. I know exactly what I’m holding.””

I pointed toward Victor.

“And apparently, so does he.””

Victor looked amused.

“She’s smarter than you expected.””

Ellis ignored him.

“Mom, where is Noah?””

The question hit me.

Not because of the words.

Because of the way he said them.

Not like a father.

Like someone looking for something he owned.

“You know where your son is,” I said.

Ellis’s eyes narrowed.

“Do I?””

That caught me off guard.

For a second, his confidence cracked.

I looked at Richard.

He noticed too.

“You lost him?”” Richard asked.

Ellis turned sharply.

“Stay out of this.””

Richard stepped forward.

“No. Not anymore.””

The room went silent.

Victor leaned against the wall.

“This is becoming emotional.””

I looked at him.

“Who are you?””

Victor smiled.

“The person who helped Noah understand what his father was doing.””

My stomach dropped.

“You taught my son?””

“I educated him.””

“You manipulated him.””

Victor tilted his head.

“Did I?””

I wanted to scream.

But something stopped me.

Because Noah’s face appeared in my mind.

The fear in his eyes.

The way he whispered, “Wait for me.””

Not “I’m sorry.””

Not “I love you.””

Wait for me.

Like he knew he would come back.

Ellis stepped closer.

“Sabrina, listen carefully. The account belongs to the Carter family. If Noah accessed it, he broke the law.””

I stared at him.

“My son?””

“He was influenced.””

“No,” I said.

“He was scared.””

Ellis’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

“You scared him.””

For the first time, he had no answer.

Victor looked at Ellis.

“Your mistake was underestimating the boy.””

Ellis turned toward him.

“Enough.””

“No,” Victor said calmly.

“It’s time you admitted it.””

I looked at Victor.

“What did Ellis do?””

Nobody answered.

That silence told me everything.

I stepped closer.

“What did he do?””

Richard finally spoke.

“Ellis moved money from the trust.””

“How much?””

Richard swallowed.

“Almost everything.””

The room went quiet.

“Why?””

Richard looked at his son.

“Because he was losing control.””

Ellis’s face turned cold.

“That’s not true.””

Richard shook his head.

“You emptied accounts. You transferred assets. You thought no one would notice.””

“I was protecting the family.””

“No,” Richard said.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Ellis looked at me.

And suddenly, I realized something.

The custody battle wasn’t about Noah.

It was about keeping me powerless.

If I had nothing, I couldn’t challenge him.

If Noah believed I was incapable, he would never ask questions.

I felt sick.

“My son found out, didn’t he?””

Richard didn’t respond.

He didn’t need to.

Ellis looked away.

That was the answer.

Victor pushed away from the wall.

“We need to leave.””

Ellis looked at him.

“Not without the card.””

Victor smiled.

“You still think this is about money.””

Then he looked at me.

“It’s not.””

I frowned.

“What is it about?””

Victor reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

And placed it on Richard’s table.

“This is what Noah wanted you to have after you found out the truth.””

My hands went cold.

“How do you have that?””

Victor didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“Because Noah knew his father would come after you.””

Ellis stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Victor looked at him.

“You should have been a better father.””

Then he walked out.

Ellis followed.

But before leaving, he stopped beside me.

“You have no idea what Noah has done.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

I held his gaze.

“I think I finally do.””

The door closed.

I stared at the envelope.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Five words written in Noah’s handwriting.

“Mom, I’m sorry I lied.””

And underneath it was a second sentence.

May you like

A sentence that made my heart stop.

“I never chose Dad.””
