Chapter 3: The Boy Who Was Protecting Me
I stared at the picture until my eyes burned.
Noah was standing near the airport entrance.
His suitcase beside him.
His face turned away from the camera.
But I recognized the person next to him.
Not Ellis.
Someone else.
A tall man in a gray coat.
Someone who looked like he was watching Noah instead of traveling with him.
I immediately called the number back.
It went straight to voicemail.
I called again.
Same result.
Then I noticed something.
The photo wasn’t sent to scare me.
It was sent to warn me.
Someone wanted me to know Noah wasn’t alone.
I grabbed my keys.
I didn’t know where I was going.
I just knew I couldn’t sit there anymore.
Before I reached the door, my phone rang.
This time, it was Ellis.
I stared at his name.
Then answered.
“What do you want?””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Where is it?””
I said nothing.
“Sabrina.””
“What are you talking about?””
“You know.””
I walked slowly back toward the table.
The black card was still there.
“You mean the thing your son gave me?””
Silence.
A dangerous silence.
“You shouldn’t have taken it.””
My chest tightened.
“Taken it?””
I laughed once.
“You left your son with two suitcases and told me to disappear. Now you’re angry because he gave me something?””
Ellis’s voice hardened.
“He doesn’t understand what he’s doing.””
“No,” I said.
“He understands more than you think.””
For the first time, Ellis sounded nervous.
“You need to bring that back.””
“Why?””
“Because it belongs to my family.””
I looked at the card.
“No. It belongs to Noah.””
Another silence.
Then Ellis said something that made my stomach drop.
“You have no idea what your son found.””
The call ended.
I stood there, frozen.
Because suddenly I understood something.
Noah wasn’t running away from me.
He was protecting me.
The question was why.
That evening, I went through every memory I had of the last few months.
The strange questions Noah asked.
The nights he stayed awake on his computer.
The way he became quiet whenever Ellis entered the room.
I remembered one night three months earlier.
Noah had been sitting at the kitchen table after midnight.
I found him staring at a stack of papers.
“What are you doing awake?”” I asked.
He quickly covered them.
“Homework.””
I smiled.
“At midnight?””
He forced a laugh.
“Yeah.””
I walked closer.
“Are you okay?””
He looked at me for a long time.
Then he asked:
“Mom, if someone had money but pretended they didn’t… would that be wrong?””
I thought he was talking about a classmate.
“Of course it would.””
“What if they were trying to protect someone?””
I frowned.
“Who?””
He looked away.
“Never mind.””
At the time, I thought it was just a strange question.
Now I knew.
It wasn’t.
The next morning, I went to the only person who might know the truth.
Ellis’s father.
Richard Carter.
I found his address through old records.
The house sat outside the city, hidden behind tall gates.
When he opened the door, his expression changed the moment he saw me.
“Sabrina.””
“You know who I am?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“Yes.””
“Then you know why I’m here.””
Richard stepped aside.
“Come in.””
The inside of the house looked like a museum.
Old paintings.
Expensive furniture.
Family photos.
But one picture caught my attention.
A younger Ellis.
Standing beside Richard.
And between them…
A little boy.
Noah.
Richard followed my eyes.
“That was taken years ago.””
“Why is Noah in this picture?””
His face changed.
“He wasn’t supposed to know.””
My heart started pounding.
“Know what?””
Richard sat down heavily.
“The truth about his father.””
I stepped closer.
“What truth?””
Richard looked toward the window.
Then he said:
“Ellis didn’t build his company alone.””
I waited.
“He inherited money from a family trust.””
“The same trust Noah found?””
Richard looked at me sharply.
“How do you know about that?””
My silence answered him.
His face went pale.
“Oh no.””
“What?””
Richard stood quickly.
“You need to leave.””
“Why?””
“Because if Ellis knows Noah gave you access…”
He stopped.
A sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
Richard looked toward the window.
And all the color disappeared from his face.
“Sabrina…”
“What?””
He whispered:
“He’s here.””
I turned toward the front door.
And before I could move, someone knocked.
Three slow knocks.
Then a familiar voice called from the other side.
“Open the door.””
Ellis.
But he wasn’t alone.
May you like
And Richard’s next words made my blood freeze.
“He brought the person who taught Noah how to hide the money.””
