Chapter 12: The Night The Truth Returned
Nobody moved.
Not even Victor.
His phone screen remained lit.
The message was still there.
She knows too much. Finish it tonight.
I stared at him.
The man who claimed to protect Noah.
The man who said he wanted justice.
The man who knew every secret.
“You were working with Richard.””
Victor slowly lowered the phone.
“It’s not what you think.””
I almost smiled.
“That’s what everyone says right before they betray me.””
Claire stepped beside me.
“Sabrina, we need to leave.””
For once, I agreed.
But before we could move, Victor blocked the exit.
Not aggressively.
Not yet.
But enough.
“You don’t understand what Richard is capable of.””
I looked at him.
“You’re warning me about him?””
“Yes.””
“After receiving that message?””
Victor’s jaw tightened.
“He doesn’t trust anyone.””
“Neither do I.””
Ellis stepped forward.
“Move.””
Victor looked at him.
“You don’t get to act like the hero now.””
Ellis’s expression changed.
“I know.””
That answer surprised everyone.
“I know what I did.””
He looked at me.
“I know I hurt her.””
Then at Victor.
“But I’m not letting you hurt my son.””
Something shifted.
Because for the first time, Ellis wasn’t fighting for money.
He was fighting for Noah.
Victor stared at him.
“You’re too late.””
“What?””
“You already lost him.””
Ellis flinched.
The words hit exactly where they were meant to.
I stepped between them.
“Where is Noah?””
Victor didn’t answer.
“Where?””
“He’s with Richard.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard convinced him he was the only person who could protect him.””
I felt sick.
Noah.
My little boy.
Caught between adults who kept using him as a weapon.
I grabbed my phone.
I called Noah.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then a message appeared.
Mom, I can’t talk.
My heart dropped.
Why?
His response came.
Because he’s here.
I froze.
Who?
The answer appeared.
Dad’s father.
Richard.
I looked at Ellis.
“Your father has Noah.””
His face went white.
“No.””
For the first time, he looked truly afraid.
Not for himself.
For his son.
“We have to go.””
Claire grabbed my arm.
“Wait.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She pulled a small key from her pocket.
“I’ve been keeping this for fifteen years.””
I stared.
“What is it?””
“Your father gave it to me.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew you would need it someday.””
I took it.
A small metal key.
Nothing special.
Except my entire life seemed to be hidden behind things that looked ordinary.
“What does it open?””
Claire looked at me.
“The place where the truth started.””
An hour later, we arrived at an abandoned office building downtown.
My old family company.
The place I supposedly forgot.
The place where my past disappeared.
The key opened a private room behind the old executive office.
Inside was a safe.
My hands shook as I opened it.
There were files.
Photographs.
A hard drive.
And a letter.
My name was written across the front.
Sabrina.
I opened it.
The handwriting was my father’s.
My eyes filled instantly.
My daughter,
If you are reading this, then they failed to erase you.
I stopped breathing.
The letter continued.
You were never weak. You were never poor. You were never alone.
I covered my mouth.
Then I read the final lines.
The person who betrayed you is not the one you think.
And the person protecting you has been lying too.
A sound came from behind me.
Footsteps.
Slow.
I turned.
Ellis stood in the doorway.
But he wasn’t alone.
Richard was beside him.
And Richard was holding Noah.
My son looked at me.
His eyes filled with tears.
“Mom…”
I stepped forward.
Richard tightened his grip.
“Don’t.””
My heart shattered.
“Noah.””
Richard looked at the letter in my hand.
“It’s time you learned the last secret.””
I stared at him.
“What secret?””
He smiled.
“The reason your father trusted me.””
I waited.
May you like
Then Richard said:
“Because I’m the one who helped him fake your death.””
