Chapter 13: The Signature That Could Destroy My Family
My mother's signature was at the bottom of the consent form.
I stared at it beneath the harsh fluorescent lights of the police station, searching for some detail that would prove it was a forgery. The familiar slant of her handwriting. The long tail of the final letter. The little mark she always made when lifting her pen.
It looked exactly like hers.
"She signed it," I whispered.
Detective Harris pulled the document closer.
"The form appears to authorize a change in Rachel's treatment, but we haven't authenticated it yet. We need the original record and the physician's notes.""
"Why would my mother sign something that could hurt Rachel?""
"That's what we need to establish.""
I pushed away from the table and walked to the window. Outside, Atlanta continued its ordinary afternoon. Cars moved through intersections.
People carried shopping bags along the sidewalk. Somewhere, children were getting out of school.
My daughter was waiting in a safe apartment, probably wondering when her father would stop looking so frightened.
And I was discovering that every person I loved might have been hiding something from me.
Detective Harris placed another page beside the consent form.
"This is the medication order from the same evening. The signature appears to belong to Dr. Foster, but the hospital's preliminary review indicates that the order may have been entered using credentials that weren't hers.""
"Then why did my mother sign the consent form?""
"Consent and prescribing authority are different things. Her signature doesn't establish that she ordered the medication or knew what it contained.""
I wanted that distinction to be enough.
It wasn't.
"Can we speak to Dr. Foster?""
"We're trying to locate her.""
"She was at her house yesterday. Someone broke in.""
"I know. Officers are searching for her now.""
I looked at the photograph from the garage.
My mother stood beside Vanessa, holding a folder. Daniel had grabbed her arm. Vanessa had locked the garage door.
If Mom had signed the form, perhaps she had been trying to protect Rachel. Perhaps she had been deceived.
Or perhaps she'd known exactly what was happening.
My phone vibrated.
A message from Daniel.
*The necklace is at the old medical facility. Bring the original hospital documents. Come alone, and Margaret walks out alive.*
I showed Detective Harris.
She immediately shook her head.
"We're not following his instructions without a plan.""
"He's holding my mother.""
"And he wants the documents. That means he believes they're valuable.""
"What if he moves her?""
"We'll use the information to develop a response. You will not go there alone.""
I nodded, but my thoughts were already moving faster than my judgment.
The old medical facility was the same building connected to Rachel's final hospitalization. If Daniel was there, the necklace might finally reveal what had happened.
And my mother might be inside.
Detective Harris arranged for officers to investigate the location. I was instructed to remain available and not contact Daniel.
For nearly an hour, I waited.
Then an officer came into the room.
"We've confirmed a vehicle connected to Daniel was seen near the facility this morning. But we haven't located Margaret.""
Detective Harris stood.
"Has the perimeter been checked?""
"Yes. There's an underground service entrance on the north side. The building plans are incomplete.""
She turned toward me.
"We're going to secure the area before entering.""
I followed the officers to the parking lot, where they coordinated with the team assigned to the facility.
I wasn't allowed to join the search.
For once, I understood why.
If Daniel saw me, he might use my presence to pressure my mother or endanger Sophie.
So I waited beside Detective Harris's vehicle, watching the minutes crawl past.
Then my phone rang.
An unfamiliar number.
I answered without speaking.
My mother's voice came through, weak but unmistakable.
"Michael?""
I nearly dropped the phone.
"Mom! Where are you?""
"Listen to me. You have to stop looking for the necklace.""
"Daniel says he has it.""
"He doesn't know what it really contains.""
"What does that mean?""
She took a shaky breath.
"The memory card isn't the only evidence. Rachel left a copy of the original medical record with someone she trusted.""
"Who?""
My mother was silent.
"Mom, tell me!""
"The doctor who delivered Sophie.""
"Dr. Foster?""
"Yes.""
I looked at Detective Harris and motioned for her to listen.
Mom continued.
"Rachel knew someone had changed the hospital records. She asked Elaine to preserve the originals. The medication order was altered, Michael. The consent form was real, but I signed it before I knew what they intended to administer.""
My knees weakened.
"Who told you to sign it?""
"Vanessa said Rachel needed treatment. She told me the doctor had explained everything.""
"Did you see Rachel drink anything?""
"No. I wasn't in the room when Vanessa returned.""
"Then how did Rachel die?""
My mother began crying.
"I don't know who changed the order. But I know who threatened Rachel before she was admitted.""
"Daniel?""
"No.""
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
"Vanessa.""
A crash sounded through the phone.
Mom gasped.
"Michael, she's here.""
My heart stopped.
"Who?""
"Vanessa. She found us.""
The call went dead.
I turned toward Detective Harris.
"Vanessa is with Daniel. My mother says she's there!""
The detective immediately relayed the information to the officers searching the facility.
Then another message arrived from Daniel.
It contained a photograph of my mother sitting in a chair, her wrists bound.
Beneath it were eight words.
*Your wife has the necklace. Your mother has the truth.*
I looked at the officers moving toward the building.
For the first time, I understood that Daniel might not be the person controlling this situation.
Vanessa had known about the necklace.
She had known about the altered records.
And now she was standing beside the man she had spent years claiming to fear.
My phone vibrated again.
May you like
This time, the message came from Vanessa.
*Michael, don't let them arrest Daniel until you hear what happened after Rachel died. I didn't kill your first wife. But I know who did.*
