Chapter 12: The Name on the Birth Record
I drove to the police station's visitor entrance with Detective Harris beside me.
She had insisted that I not meet Vanessa alone.
For once, I didn't argue.
Vanessa was waiting in a small conference room, wearing the same coat she'd worn in the garage footage. Her eyes were swollen, and her hands were clasped tightly in her lap.
When she saw me, she stood.
"Michael.""
I remained near the door.
"You said you had proof.""
She nodded and removed a photograph from her handbag.
It showed Rachel in a hospital bed, holding newborn Sophie. I recognized the blanket wrapped around our daughter. I recognized the bracelet on Rachel's wrist and the exhausted smile on her face.
But something was different.
A folded document rested on the blanket beside her.
Vanessa pointed to it.
"That's the original birth record.""
I examined the photograph.
"The hospital gave me the paperwork after Sophie was born.""
"Not this page.""
"What's different about it?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"The original record listed a different name in the section for the biological father.""
I felt Detective Harris move closer.
"What name?"" I asked.
Vanessa looked at me.
"Daniel Mercer.""
I stared at her.
The room seemed to shrink around me.
"You're saying Daniel is Sophie's biological father?""
"I'm saying that's what the original record appears to show.""
"Then why did Rachel tell me Sophie was mine?""
Vanessa began to cry.
"Because she wanted you to raise her. She wanted Sophie to have a father who loved her.""
I shook my head.
"No. Rachel wouldn't have built our marriage on a lie.""
"She loved you.""
"Stop saying that as if it explains everything!""
My voice echoed through the room.
Vanessa flinched, and I immediately lowered it.
I wouldn't let my anger become another reason for Sophie to fear the adults around her.
Detective Harris held out her hand.
"May I see the photograph?""
Vanessa passed it to her.
The detective studied it carefully.
"A photograph of a document isn't sufficient to establish paternity or prove the authenticity of a birth record. We'll need to locate the original paperwork.""
Vanessa nodded.
"I know.""
"How did you obtain this photograph?""
"Rachel gave it to me before she died.""
"Why?""
"She wanted me to protect Sophie if anything happened to her.""
Detective Harris glanced at me.
"Did you know Daniel was claiming to be the biological father?""
"I knew he believed it. I didn't know whether it was true.""
I stared at Vanessa.
"You've spent years telling me Daniel was dangerous. You've also spent years keeping him close enough to threaten our daughter. Why?""
"Because he knew things about Rachel that I didn't.""
"Such as?""
Vanessa took a deep breath.
"Rachel told him she was pregnant before she met you. But she also told me something else. She said Daniel had been involved in an incident at the hospital that could destroy his career.""
"What incident?""
"She found evidence that he had accessed patient records and changed information without authorization. She copied the records and threatened to report him.""
Detective Harris made another note.
"And what happened to the evidence?""
"Rachel hid it.""
"Where?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"In the necklace.""
I remembered her earlier admission that she'd given the necklace to Daniel.
"Then why are you telling us this now?""
"Because Daniel has become desperate. He believes the memory card contains evidence that could send him to prison. He's been threatening me, Margaret, and Sophie.""
"Why did you hit Sophie?"" I asked.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
For several seconds, she couldn't speak.
Then she lowered her hands.
"Because I was angry.""
I stared at her.
"Angry at a six-year-old child?""
"Not because she was hungry. Not really.""
"Then why?""
"Because Margaret told me she'd found the necklace. She said she was going to give it to you. I thought everything I'd done to keep Daniel quiet was about to come apart.""
She looked down.
"When Sophie reached for the bread, I saw Margaret's face in my mind. I heard her telling me I'd never get away with it. I took my anger out on Sophie.""
There was no excuse in her confession.
Only a glimpse of how completely she'd failed my daughter.
I stood.
"Did you ever love Sophie?""
Vanessa's face crumpled.
"I wanted to.""
"That isn't what I asked.""
She couldn't answer.
I turned toward Detective Harris.
"I want every part of this statement documented.""
She nodded.
"We'll make arrangements.""
Vanessa suddenly reached for my sleeve.
"Michael, please. I know I've done terrible things. But I can help you find Margaret.""
I pulled away.
"Then tell the police where she is.""
"I don't know the exact address. Daniel moves her around.""
"How do you know she's alive?""
"Because he sent me a video yesterday.""
Detective Harris immediately leaned forward.
"Do you still have it?""
Vanessa nodded and unlocked her phone.
She played the video.
My mother appeared on the screen, sitting at a wooden table. Her face was bruised, but she was upright and alert.
"Michael," Mom said, looking directly into the camera.
"If you see this, don't believe everything they tell you about Rachel. I made mistakes, but I did not kill her.""
The video stopped.
I felt as if someone had driven a blade between my ribs.
Mom had known I might hear the accusation.
She'd wanted me to know she was innocent.
But why hadn't she simply gone to the police?
Detective Harris took the phone and asked an officer to preserve the video.
"Vanessa, when was this recorded?""
"Yesterday morning.""
"Did Daniel tell you where Margaret was?""
"No.""
"Did you ask?""
"Yes. He said she'd be released when he got the memory card.""
I leaned forward.
"Then help us find the necklace.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know where it is. But Daniel told me he'd be at the old medical facility tonight.""
Detective Harris exchanged a glance with the officer beside her.
"We'll verify that information before taking action.""
As we left the conference room, my phone vibrated.
An email had arrived from an unfamiliar address.
The subject line read:
*Rachel Bennett — Original Records Attached.*
There were three attachments.
The first was a scanned hospital document.
The second was a photograph of a medication order bearing a doctor's signature.
The third was a short letter written by Rachel.
I opened it with trembling hands.
Michael, if you are reading this, then the truth has finally reached you.
I need you to know that I never wanted you to suffer. I loved you, and I loved the family we built. But I was terrified that if I told you everything, Daniel would take Sophie away from us.
I scrolled to the bottom.
The person who changed my medical records wasn't Daniel.
My heart stopped.
The next line contained a name.
*Dr. Elaine Foster.*
Then another sentence appeared beneath it.
But she didn't do it alone.
I stared at the screen.
Detective Harris leaned over my shoulder.
"Michael, don't open anything else until our forensic team has examined the files.""
But another notification appeared before I could lock the phone.
A message from the same sender.
*If you want to know who actually ordered the medication, ask your mother why she signed the consent form.*

I looked up at Detective Harris.
And for the first time, I wondered whether the person I was fighting to save had been hiding the darkest secret of all.
