Chapter 9: The Man in the Hospital Photograph

I didn't sleep that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Daniel's handwriting.

He saw who took the original.

By six in the morning, I had placed the photograph, the letter from Daniel's attorney, and the copies of the disputed trust documents in a folder of my own.

I didn't touch anything else in the cabinet.

Thomas had warned me not to alter or discard potential evidence, and I intended to follow that advice.

At seven, I called him.

“I found a photograph Daniel left behind.””

He was quiet for a moment.

“Can you describe it?””

“Daniel is in his hospital bed. The date on the back matches Brooke's visit. He wrote that Michael saw who took the original.””

“Don't send the original through an ordinary messaging app. Keep it safe, and I'll arrange a way for it to be examined and documented.””

“Do you think Michael knows who took the folder?””

“I can't say. But if Daniel wrote that, it gives us a reason to ask Michael for a formal account of what he witnessed.””

I glanced toward the stairs.

Lily was still asleep.

“Thomas, I need to know what Daniel was trying to protect.””

“I understand. But we need to separate what we know from what we suspect. We have a disputed application, a frozen withdrawal request, a missing notebook, and a photograph. Each piece needs to be verified.””

I thanked him and ended the call.

At eight, my mother arrived.

She didn't knock. She used the spare key she'd apparently given Brooke and walked straight into my kitchen.

I was standing beside the counter with a cup of coffee when she appeared in the doorway.

“Emily, we need to talk.””

I put the cup down.

“You need to give me your key.””

She blinked.

“What?””

“The key to my house. Now.””

Her lips tightened.

“I came here because I'm worried about you.””

“You gave Brooke access to my home without my permission. She took Lily's notebook. Until we understand what else happened, you don't get to walk in here whenever you please.””

Mother looked wounded.

“I'm your mother.””

“And I'm Lily's mother.””

She glanced toward the stairs.

“Is she awake?””

“No.””

“Good. This conversation shouldn't involve her.””

I almost laughed.

“You keep saying that as though the problem is that Lily might hear the truth.””

Mother pulled a chair out and sat down.

“Your father made a terrible mistake.””

“Which one?””

She flinched.

“He thought he was helping Brooke.””

“By signing a statement about a document Daniel never signed?””

“He believed Daniel had agreed to transfer the money.””

“Did you see Daniel sign it?””

Mother looked down at her handbag.

“No.””

“Did Dad?””

“I don't know.””

“Then what made either of you believe it was legitimate?””

She began twisting her wedding ring.

“Brooke said Michael had spoken to someone who knew the arrangements. She said Daniel had changed his mind before he died.””

“Daniel never changed his mind about Lily.””

Mother's eyes filled.

“I know.””

“No, Mom. You don't get to say that now. You watched Lily's costume being destroyed yesterday and told me it was just a competition.””

“I was trying to prevent Brooke from losing everything.””

“And what about Lily?””

Mother had no answer.

I held out my hand.

“The key.””

She slowly reached into her handbag and placed it on the counter.

I picked it up.

“Now tell me about the letter.””

Her face went pale.

“What letter?””

“The one Michael says you have.””

For several seconds, she didn't move.

Then she whispered, “He told you about that?””

“Yes.””

Mother covered her face.

“Oh, God.””

“Where is it?””

“I didn't know what it meant.””

“Where is it, Mom?””

She stood abruptly.

“I can't do this.””

“You came into my house. You can either tell me the truth or leave.””

She looked at me with tears running down her cheeks.

“It's at your father's office.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because he said it was safer there.””

“Safer from whom?””

She didn't answer.

I took out my phone and called Thomas. I explained that my mother had admitted knowing about a letter connected to Daniel's disputed trust documents and said it was being kept at my father's office.

Thomas advised me not to go there or attempt to retrieve it myself. He said he would document the disclosure and arrange for the matter to be addressed through the appropriate channels.

When I ended the call, Mother was still standing beside the counter.

“Emily, please don't destroy your father's life over this.””

I looked at her.

“He had a choice. So did you.””

“Families make mistakes.””

“Yes. But families can also choose to tell the truth.””

She began crying harder.

I walked to the front door and opened it.

“I'm asking you to leave now.””

Mother stared at me as if she'd never seen me before.

Then she walked outside.

I locked the door behind her.

At nine-thirty, Michael called.

I almost didn't answer.

Then I remembered Daniel's note.

He saw who took the original.

I picked up.

“Michael, I found a photograph Daniel left behind. He wrote that you saw who took the folder.””

Michael exhaled slowly.

“Where did you find it?””

“In my house.””

“Then Daniel must have hidden it before he went to the hospital.””

“What did you see that night?””

He didn't answer.

“Michael, you don't have to protect Brooke anymore.””

“It's not Brooke I'm protecting.””

The words chilled me.

“Who, then?””

He sighed.

“Your father.””

I sat down.

“Why?””

“Because Robert wasn't the one who entered Daniel's room.””

I felt my heart begin to pound.

“Who was?””

Michael's voice dropped.

“I saw someone leave Daniel's room carrying the blue folder. I didn't see their face clearly, but I recognized their coat.””

“Whose coat?””

“Your mother's.””

I couldn't speak.

Michael continued.

“She told me later that she had taken the folder because Daniel was confused about the trust. She said she was trying to protect the family.””

“And you believed her?””

“At first.””

“What changed?””

“Daniel called me the following morning. He asked me whether I'd seen anyone enter his room the night before. I told him what I knew. He asked me to promise that I would keep the original records safe.””

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

“Where are they?””

“Not with me anymore.””

My stomach tightened.

“Where did you put them?””

“I gave them to someone Daniel trusted.””

“Who?””

He hesitated.

Then he said, “His attorney.””

Thomas.

I stood and called Thomas on the other line, asking him to confirm whether Michael had ever delivered additional records to his office.

Thomas said he would check his archived inventory before making any assumptions.

I returned to Michael.

“Why didn't you tell me this two years ago?””

“Because Robert threatened to accuse me of stealing from Daniel's estate if I got involved. He said he had documents proving I was trying to take the trust for myself.””

“Were those documents real?””

“I don't know. But he had enough influence with the family that I believed him.””

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

“Michael, why are you telling me now?””

“Because Madison heard Brooke talking to Robert last night. She told me they were planning to say the scholarship application was a misunderstanding and blame everything on me.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Brooke was preparing another escape route.

“Where is Madison now?””

“With me. She's safe.””

“Does she know what happened?””

“She knows enough to understand that her mother made a terrible mistake. I'm not going to ask her to lie for anyone.””

For the first time, I felt a small measure of respect for Michael.

“Thank you for protecting her.””

“I should have spoken up sooner.””

“Yes,” I said.

“You should have.””

He accepted the words without arguing.

Then he added, “Emily, there's one more thing. The person who took the folder wasn't just trying to get the trust documents.””

“What else were they looking for?””

“Daniel told me he had made a separate record of the night someone first asked him to transfer Lily's design rights. He said the record included a message that could prove the whole thing had started before he died.””

My heart hammered.

“Who sent the message?””

“I never saw the name. But Daniel told me that if the record ever surfaced, it would explain why your father agreed to sign the declaration.””

Before I could ask anything else, Thomas called me back.

I ended the conversation with Michael and answered.

“Emily,” Thomas said, “I've checked the archived inventory. Michael did deliver a sealed packet to my office two years ago. It was logged, but the file was mistakenly placed under Daniel's medical correspondence.””

I gripped the phone.

“What's inside?””

“A copy of a message, a handwritten statement, and a photograph. I haven't examined the contents yet.””

“Can you tell me who sent the message?””

There was a pause.

“Emily, the sender's name is visible on the inventory description.””

My breath caught.

“Who?””

Thomas spoke slowly.

“Patricia Carter.””

My mother.

I stared at the photograph of Daniel on my kitchen table.

The woman who had told me she was trying to protect the family had apparently been involved from the beginning.

Then Thomas added one final detail.

“The message was sent to Daniel the day before Brooke visited him in the hospital. It says, 'Sign the transfer, or Emily will never learn what really happened to her husband.''”
