Chapter 8: The Key Daniel Never Told Me About

Thomas read the name twice before turning the document toward me.

*Michael Walker.*

Brooke's husband.

For several seconds, I couldn't make sense of it.

Michael had always been the quiet one. He rarely joined our family arguments. At holidays, he helped clear plates while Brooke complained about the food. When Daniel became ill, Michael sent occasional messages asking how he was doing, but he never seemed particularly involved.

I'd never imagined him standing at the center of anything.

“Why would Daniel give Michael a key to our house?”” I asked.

Thomas shook his head.

“The record doesn't establish that Daniel gave him a key. It indicates Michael signed a confidentiality agreement concerning Daniel's estate planning.””

“Why would a brother-in-law need to sign that?””

“That's what we need to establish.””

Victoria glanced at the clock.

“The foundation can preserve its original records, but I can't investigate the family's private legal arrangements. Thomas, would you recommend that Emily contact the police about the possible unauthorized access?””

“Yes. She has already reported the destruction of Lily's property and the disputed withdrawal attempt. She should provide this additional information through the same process.””

I looked down at Lily.

She had fallen asleep on the couch, exhausted by the afternoon. Her ruined butterfly wing lay beside her, carefully folded in a paper towel.

I brushed her hair from her forehead.

“I need to get her home.””

Victoria nodded.

“Of course. I'll arrange for a written summary of the foundation's actions and make sure Lily's original registration remains preserved.””

Before we left, she knelt beside Lily and gently placed a card on the table.

“Tell your daughter she can contact me through the foundation when she's ready,” she told me.

“There will be no pressure to participate in another event. Her well-being comes first.””

I thanked her.

Thomas walked us to the school entrance. As we crossed the hallway, I noticed Brooke standing near the principal's office, arguing with a security officer.

She spotted me and hurried over.

“Emily, wait!””

I stopped but didn't approach her.

“What?””

“Please. I need to tell you something about Michael.””

Thomas moved beside me.

“Mrs. Walker, if you have information relevant to the investigation, you should provide it to the authorities.””

“This isn't about the investigation!””

She looked at me desperately.

“Michael has been acting strangely for months. He started asking about Daniel's papers. He wanted to know whether you had found the original trust agreement.””

My heart pounded.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I didn't think it mattered!””

“You took the notebook from my house.””

“Mom told me where it was. Michael told me what to look for.””

The admission hung between us.

Thomas's expression hardened.

“Did Michael instruct you to take Lily's notebook?””

Brooke shook her head.

“He said to find anything Daniel had written about the trust. He didn't specifically tell me to take Lily's things.””

“Did he know about the design?””

“Yes.””

“Did he help you submit Madison's application?””

Brooke hesitated.

“He helped with the paperwork.””

I stared at her.

“You told me this was your plan.””

“It was my plan to help Madison win! Michael said the foundation wouldn't question a family application if the documents looked legitimate.””

Thomas immediately took out his phone.

“Mrs. Walker, please don't contact Michael about this conversation. Preserve all messages and records. We'll provide the information to the appropriate authorities.””

Brooke's eyes widened.

“You can't tell me what to do with my own husband.””

“No,” Thomas replied.

“But I can tell you that destroying or altering potentially relevant evidence could make this situation considerably worse.””

Brooke looked at me.

“Emily, please. You know what Michael is like. He always finds a way to make things look like someone else's fault.””

I couldn't believe she was asking me for sympathy.

“You helped him take from Lily.””

“I didn't know about the money until recently!””

“Then why is your account listed as the destination?””

She opened her mouth, then closed it.

I turned away.

“I'm done listening to excuses.””

As we reached the parking lot, my phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man's voice spoke quietly.

“Emily? It's Michael.””

My entire body stiffened.

“How did you get this number?””

“Brooke told me you were asking questions.””

Thomas gestured for me to put the call on speaker.

I did.

“What do you want, Michael?””

“I want to stop this before it gets out of control.””

“You mean before the police investigate?””

He sighed.

“Look, I know Brooke made a mistake with the costume. But this thing with Daniel's papers is different.””

“Then explain it.””

Silence.

Finally, he said, “Daniel asked me to help with something before he died. I agreed because he trusted me.””

Thomas leaned closer.

“Mr. Walker, this is Thomas Reed, Daniel's attorney. What exactly did you agree to do?””

Michael's voice sharpened.

“I'm not discussing confidential matters with you over the phone.””

“Then you can discuss them with the appropriate investigators.””

Michael ignored him.

“Emily, your father is going to take the blame for something he doesn't understand. Your mother will, too. Brooke is already panicking. If you keep pushing, all three of them could lose everything.””

I felt a cold wave move through me.

“Are you threatening me?””

“No. I'm trying to protect your family.””

“My family is the little girl whose costume your wife destroyed.””

“I'm talking about the adults.””

“Then you should have thought about them before someone tried to steal her trust.””

Michael exhaled sharply.

“You don't know what Daniel agreed to.””

Thomas raised his hand, signaling me not to respond impulsively.

I kept my voice steady.

“Then show me the agreement.””

“I can't.””

“Why not?””

“Because it's gone.””

Thomas's eyes narrowed.

“What is gone, Mr. Walker?””

Michael fell silent.

I could hear traffic in the background, followed by the muffled slam of a car door.

Then he spoke again.

“The blue folder wasn't the only thing Daniel kept in that hospital drawer.””

My heart began racing.

“What else was there?””

“A letter.””

“From whom?””

“Emily, please. You need to understand something. Daniel knew your family was going to fight over the trust. He knew Brooke would never accept that Lily had something Madison didn't.””

“Then why didn't he tell me?””

“Because he didn't want you to know what your father had already promised.””

Thomas stepped closer to the phone.

“Mr. Walker, what promise are you referring to?””

Michael hesitated.

Then he said, “Robert agreed to sign a declaration stating that Daniel had transferred the trust to Brooke. But Daniel never signed it.””

My breath caught.

“Dad agreed to help forge my husband's signature?””

“I don't know who forged it. I only know your father signed the supporting statement.””

“Why?””

“Because Robert believed the money would eventually go to Madison, and he thought Lily would never need it.””

I closed my eyes.

The cruelty was almost too large to comprehend.

My father had decided, without consulting me, that one granddaughter's future mattered more than the other's.

“Where is the letter?”” I asked.

Michael didn't answer.

“Michael, where is it?””

“I don't have it.””

“Who does?””

A long silence followed.

Then Michael whispered, “Your mother.””

The call disconnected.

I stared at my phone.

Thomas immediately documented the details of the conversation and told me not to call Michael back.

We drove home in silence, Lily sleeping in the back seat.

When I reached my driveway, I carried her inside and tucked her into bed. She stirred briefly, murmured something about her butterfly wings, and fell asleep again.

I stood in her doorway until I was sure she was resting comfortably.

Then I went downstairs.

For two years, I'd avoided opening the cabinet where Daniel kept his old papers. I couldn't bear to see his handwriting or the notes he'd left beside the bills.

Now I opened it.

Inside were medical records, insurance statements, and a small wooden box containing Daniel's watch.

The blue folder was gone.

But something else caught my attention.

A white envelope had been slipped behind the cabinet's back panel.

My name was written across the front.

I pulled it free.

Inside was a photograph of Daniel sitting in his hospital bed, smiling weakly at someone standing just outside the frame.

On the back, he had written a date.

The night Brooke visited him.

Beneath it were six words.

If they deny it, ask Michael.

I stared at the photograph.

Then I turned it over again and examined the corner I'd missed.

A second sentence had been written in smaller letters.

He saw who took the original.
