Chapter 4: My Father Tried to Steal His Granddaughter’s Future

“Robert Carter.””

The attorney repeated my father's name, as though he expected me to tell him he'd made a mistake.

I couldn't answer.

Across the hallway, Dad was speaking to Principal Harris, his expression arranged into the same calm, reasonable mask he'd worn my entire life whenever Brooke had done something unforgivable.

He noticed me staring.

“What is it now, Emily?””

I held the phone tighter against my ear.

“Mr. Bennett, please don't release anything. Don't authorize any transfer, and don't change the account without contacting me first.””

“Already done, Mrs. Carter. The transaction has been frozen pending verification.

I also need to confirm whether you authorized Mr. Carter to act on your behalf.””

“I did not.””

“Thank you. I'll document that statement and have our fraud team contact you about the next steps.””

I ended the call.

For a moment, I simply stared at my father.

Then I walked toward him.

“Dad, why did you try to withdraw twenty-five thousand dollars from Lily's trust?””

His face changed.

Not much. Just a tightening around the eyes, a brief pause before he answered.

But I saw it.

“What are you talking about?””

“The attorney just called me. Someone attempted to withdraw twenty-five thousand dollars from Daniel's educational trust this morning. The application has your name on it.””

My mother made a small noise behind him.

Brooke stopped typing on her phone.

Dad looked around at the parents gathering near the auditorium.

“Not here,” he muttered.

“Funny. You didn't seem concerned about making a scene when Lily was crying over her destroyed costume.””

“Keep your voice down.””

“Did you try to take her money?””

He stepped closer and lowered his voice.

“I was protecting the family's interests.””

I felt as if the floor had disappeared beneath my feet.

“Her trust belongs to her.””

“Your husband left complicated financial arrangements. Someone had to make decisions.””

“I'm her mother. I make those decisions.””

“You're emotional, Emily. You always have been.””

That was his favorite weapon.

Whenever I questioned him, I was emotional. Whenever Brooke lied, she was struggling. Whenever I demanded fairness, I was tearing the family apart.

I looked him directly in the eyes.

“Did Daniel authorize you to access that account?””

Dad's jaw tightened.

“Daniel and I discussed several things before he died.””

“Then show me the paperwork.””

He glanced toward Mother.

That single glance told me more than any answer could have.

Victoria Harrison approached us, carrying her portfolio beneath one arm.

“Mr. Carter, I strongly recommend that you preserve every document relating to the trust and the disputed design assignment.””

Dad straightened.

“Who are you to give me legal advice?””

“I'm not giving you legal advice. I'm informing you that the foundation has received documents that appear inconsistent with its original registration records.””

“Then investigate them. Don't drag my family into it.””

Victoria's expression remained steady.

“Your family submitted them.””

Brooke suddenly stepped forward.

“This is absurd. Dad was only trying to help.””

I turned toward her.

“Help yourself to Lily's money?””

“Don't twist my words!””

“Then explain why your name appears on the document transferring Lily's trust to you.””

Brooke's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Madison stood several feet away, tears sliding down her cheeks. She looked from her mother to her grandfather, and I saw the moment she began to understand that the adults she'd trusted were hiding something much bigger than a school competition.

“Mom,” she whispered, “you said the money was for my future.””

Brooke spun around.

“Madison, go sit down.””

“But you said Grandpa was helping us!””

Dad grabbed Brooke's arm.

“Not another word. Both of you.””

I almost laughed.

They were still trying to control the conversation, as though the truth were a family possession they could lock away.

Principal Harris finally intervened.

“I'm going to ask everyone involved to leave the student hallway. Mrs. Carter, you and Lily are welcome to wait in my office. Mrs.

Walker, Mr. Carter, and Mrs. Carter, I need you to remain available for the school's investigation into the incident.””

Brooke glared at him.

“You can't order me around.””

“No,” he replied.

“But I can document your refusal to cooperate.””

That silenced her.

I walked back to Lily and knelt beside her.

“Sweetheart, we're going to go somewhere quiet.””

She looked up at me.

“Are we in trouble?””

The question nearly broke my heart.

“No, baby. You haven't done anything wrong.””

“Is Grandpa mad at me?””

I swallowed.

“Grandpa is responsible for his own choices. You don't have to fix them.””

She leaned against me, and I held her until her breathing slowed.

Behind us, my phone buzzed again.

A message from Mr. Bennett appeared on the screen.

We've identified a second document attached to the withdrawal request. Please review the name of the proposed receiving account.

I opened the attachment.

The receiving account belonged to Brooke Walker.

But that wasn't the worst part.

The application included a scanned authorization bearing my signature.

My actual signature.

The same one I'd used on Daniel's funeral paperwork.

I stared at it, my fingers turning cold.

Someone had copied my signature to authorize the transfer.

I looked toward my sister.

She was watching me.

And when our eyes met, she didn't look surprised.

She looked afraid.

“Brooke,” I whispered.

“What else did you steal from me?””

She backed away.

May you like

Then my mother said something that made the blood drain from my face.

“Emily, before you do anything, you need to know what Daniel told your father the night before he died.””
