Chapter 5: The Night I Forgot
I couldn’t stop staring at the photograph.
My hands felt numb.
Because I remembered that night.
At least, I thought I did.
Graduation.
The celebration afterward.
The laughter.
The pictures.
But this photo showed something I had forgotten.
Something important.
“Why don’t I remember this?”” I whispered.
Emily sat quietly across from me.
“Because you weren’t supposed to.””
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
She took the photo from my hands.
“Rachel, after graduation, Daniel knew I was going to expose him.””
“Expose him for stealing your work?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
Emily looked at the floor.
“Because something happened before I could.””
The office door suddenly opened.
A woman from the restaurant stepped inside.
“Ms. Carter, there’s someone asking for you.””
Emily frowned.
“Who?””
The woman hesitated.
“Daniel Whitmore.””
The name changed everything.
Emily immediately stood.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“You don’t want to see him?””
“I know exactly why he’s here.””
Before she could stop me, I stood too.
“I’m coming with you.””
Emily looked surprised.
“Rachel.””
“I spent ten years believing a lie.””
I looked at the photograph.
“I deserve to hear the truth.””
She studied my face.
Then nodded.
“Stay beside me.””
We walked back into the restaurant.
And there he was.
Daniel Whitmore.
Older.
More polished.
More expensive.
But the same confident smile.
He stood near the entrance wearing a perfectly tailored suit.
When he saw Emily, he smiled.
“Emily.””
She stopped several feet away.
“Daniel.””
His eyes moved to me.
Then widened slightly.
“Rachel?””
I felt uncomfortable.
“You remember me?””
He laughed.
“Of course.””
Something about his answer felt wrong.
Too quick.
Too smooth.
Daniel looked at Emily.
“I heard there was a misunderstanding tonight.””
Emily crossed her arms.
“A misunderstanding?””
He glanced around.
“The restaurant incident.””
“You mean Vanessa humiliating my employee?””
His smile disappeared for half a second.
Then returned.
“I mean emotions got out of control.””
I stared at him.
“You knew about Vanessa?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I know a lot of things.””
The way he said it made my skin crawl.
Emily stepped forward.
“Why are you here?””
Daniel sighed.
“Because I want to avoid making this ugly.””
The manager nearby looked uncomfortable.
Emily laughed quietly.
“You already made it ugly ten years ago.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
A crack.
“What happened ten years ago was complicated.””
“No,” Emily said.
“It was simple.””
She pointed at him.
“You took credit for my work.””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Careful.””
The warning surprised me.
Emily didn’t move.
“Are you threatening me?””
“No.””
He smiled.
“I’m reminding you that some stories are better left buried.””
My heart started beating faster.
Because that sounded exactly like something a guilty person would say.
Daniel looked at me.
“Rachel, you should be careful about listening to only one side.””
I felt anger rise.
“Funny. I don’t remember you telling me any side.””
His smile faded.
For the first time, he looked at me differently.
Like I was no longer someone he could control.
Emily noticed.
“Why did you really come here?””
Daniel reached into his briefcase.
“I came to give you a chance.””
He placed a document on the table.
“Sell me your shares.””
The restaurant became silent.
I stared.
“You’re trying to buy her out?””
Daniel looked calm.
“I’m trying to save her from losing everything.””
Emily didn’t touch the document.
“You’re unbelievable.””
Daniel leaned closer.
“You know what happens when people discover the truth?””
He looked at me.
“They don’t always support the person who was hurt.””
A chill ran through me.
Because I knew he was talking about the past.
Not the restaurant.
Emily picked up the document.
Then tore it in half.
Daniel’s smile vanished.
“Still stubborn.””
Emily looked at him.
“Still a thief.””
He turned and walked away.
But before leaving, he stopped beside me.
“Rachel.””
I looked at him.
“You really don’t remember that night?””
My chest tightened.
“What night?””
Daniel smiled.
“The night you helped destroy Emily’s future.””
Then he left.
I stood frozen.
Emily looked at me.
May you like
And for the first time since I arrived at the restaurant…
She looked afraid.
