Chapter 11: The Man At The Door

The bedroom door opened slowly.

Daniel stood there.

No panic.

No anger.

Just that same calm smile.

The same smile that had fooled everyone for years.

“You really were always predictable.””

My father stepped forward.

“You don’t belong here.””

Daniel looked at him.

For a moment, his smile disappeared.

“Actually, I think this is exactly where I belong.””

I moved closer to Emily.

“How did you find us?””

Daniel laughed softly.

“You still don’t understand.””

He looked at the room.

“I knew you would come here.””

“You planted the message.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“To make you remember.””

I stared at him.

“You could have taken the evidence yourself.””

Daniel nodded.

“I could have.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

His smile returned.

“Because I needed you to find it.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Daniel walked into the room.

“The evidence only matters if Rachel remembers where it came from.””

Emily stepped forward.

“You’re afraid of what it proves.””

Daniel looked at her.

“No.””

He smiled.

“I’m afraid Rachel will finally understand what she did.””

I clenched my fists.

“Stop saying that.””

“Why?””

“Because it’s a lie.””

Daniel tilted his head.

“Is it?””

The confidence in his voice bothered me.

Because he knew something.

Something I didn’t.

My father moved beside me.

“Rachel, don’t listen to him.””

Daniel looked amused.

“Interesting.””

He glanced at my father.

“You still protect her with half the truth.””

My stomach tightened.

“Half the truth?””

My father went quiet.

I turned toward him.

“Dad?””

Daniel smiled.

“There it is.””

Emily looked between them.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel walked toward the old desk.

“Your father never told you why he disappeared.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“Enough.””

“No.””

Daniel picked up an old photograph from the desk.

“He deserves to know.””

I looked at my father.

“Why did you leave?””

Silence.

The kind that hurts before anyone speaks.

My father finally said:

“Because I made a mistake.””

My heart sank.

“What mistake?””

Daniel answered.

“He trusted the wrong people.””

My father looked at him.

“You don’t get to tell this story.””

Daniel smiled.

“Then tell it.””

Nobody moved.

My father looked older than he had minutes ago.

“I discovered Daniel’s father was hiding money.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

“No.””

My father shook his head.

“You know the beginning.””

He looked at me.

“Not the reason you became involved.””

I felt cold.

“What reason?””

My father took a breath.

“Because Daniel didn’t just steal Emily’s work.””

He looked at Daniel.

“He used you to steal mine.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Daniel.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel didn’t deny it.

And that scared me.

My father continued.

“When I found out Daniel was involved, I tried to collect proof.””

“The documents.””

“Yes.””

“And I hid them?””

My father nodded.

“You copied them before I could.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“Because you thought you were helping me.””

My eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t remember.””

“I know.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“Because I convinced you that protecting your father meant protecting me.””

The memory hit suddenly.

Daniel crying.

Daniel pretending to be scared.

Daniel telling me he needed my help.

I stepped back.

“You used me.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked everyone.

“You were the perfect person to use.””

Emily looked disgusted.

“How can you say that?””

Daniel shrugged.

“Because Rachel believed people were good.””

His words hurt because they were true.

Then he reached into his coat.

And placed a small device on the desk.

“What is that?””

Daniel smiled.

“A backup.””

My father’s face changed.

“What did you do?””

Daniel looked at me.

“The evidence isn’t the only thing that can destroy someone.””

He pressed a button.

The device lit up.

A recording started playing.

My own voice filled the room.

My younger voice.

Saying something I had no memory of.

“I’ll hide the documents. Nobody will find them.””

I covered my mouth.

“No…”

Daniel smiled.

“Now do you remember?””

The recording continued.

Then my younger voice said one final sentence.

A sentence that made Emily look at me in shock.

“I trust Daniel.””

The room went silent.

May you like

And Daniel whispered:

“That’s why I knew you would never suspect me.””
