Chapter 13: The Person We Never Suspected

Nobody moved.

Emily held the tiny piece of paper between her fingers like it weighed more than anything else in the room.

Daniel stared at it.

And for the first time since I saw him again, he didn’t look confident.

He looked afraid.

“Who?”” I asked.

My voice sounded distant.

“Who was involved?””

Emily looked at the paper again.

Her face changed with every word she read.

“Rachel…”

She swallowed.

“I don’t know how to tell you this.””

“Just tell me.””

She looked at my father.

Then at me.

“The person who helped Daniel hide everything…”

A pause.

“…was someone from our school.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

Emily closed her eyes.

Then said:

“Mrs. Anderson.””

I froze.

Our chemistry teacher.

The woman who encouraged Emily.

The woman who told everyone she believed Emily was going places.

“No.””

Daniel looked away.

That was enough.

I knew.

“You knew.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“You knew she was involved.””

His jaw tightened.

“She made her choice.””

Emily stepped forward.

“She was my teacher.””

Daniel laughed softly.

“Everyone has a price.””

I felt sick.

All those years.

All those memories.

A teacher I trusted.

A person who seemed to protect students.

Had been helping him.

My father looked at Emily.

“What does the paper say?””

Emily unfolded it completely.

“It’s a list.””

“A list of what?””

“Payments.””

The room became silent.

“Payments to who?””

Emily looked at the names.

Then her eyes stopped.

“No.””

I moved closer.

“What?””

She looked up.

“There’s another name.””

“Whose?””

Her voice shook.

“Your mother’s.””

My world stopped.

“My mother?””

Daniel smiled slightly.

And I hated that smile.

“What did he do?””

Emily looked at the paper.

“She wasn’t paid.””

“Then why is her name there?””

My father stepped closer.

“Because they were tracking her.””

Emily nodded.

“She was a witness.””

Everything suddenly connected.

My father disappearing.

My mother hiding.

Emily staying silent.

Daniel controlling the story.

It wasn’t about money.

It was about removing everyone who knew the truth.

Daniel moved toward the door.

My father noticed.

“Where are you going?””

Daniel stopped.

“I think I’ve stayed long enough.””

“You’re not leaving.””

Daniel looked amused.

“You think this ends because you found a piece of paper?””

Emily held the evidence tightly.

“You’re finished.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You still don’t understand.””

“What?””

He pointed at the paper.

“You found proof.””

Emily frowned.

“Yes.””

“But proof only matters if people believe it.””

The confidence returned.

“My lawyers are already preparing the story.””

I felt anger rise.

“What story?””

Daniel looked at me.

“The story where Emily manipulated an old friend.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

He smiled.

“The story where Rachel helped steal confidential information.””

“That’s a lie.””

“Is it?””

He stepped closer.

“Who has the missing documents?””

Nobody answered.

“Who hid them?””

I looked down.

Me.

Daniel continued.

“Who trusted me?””

The silence hurt.

Because he knew exactly where to attack.

Then Emily did something unexpected.

She laughed.

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

Emily looked at him.

“You still think the same way.””

“What does that mean?””

“You think everyone is as selfish as you.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

Emily stepped forward.

“You spent ten years collecting secrets.””

She held up the pendant.

“But you forgot one thing.””

“What?””

“You weren’t the only person keeping records.””

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

Emily reached into her pocket.

She pulled out her phone.

“I sent everything.””

Daniel went still.

“To who?””

“Every investor.””

A pause.

“The police.””

Another pause.

“And every journalist who covered your father’s company.””

Daniel’s face changed.

For the first time…

He looked powerless.

Then the restaurant lights suddenly turned on.

A loud sound came from downstairs.

Sirens.

Daniel looked toward the window.

My father whispered:

“Too late.””

Daniel stared at Emily.

“You planned this.””

Emily shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Rachel did.””

I turned.

“What?””

Emily smiled faintly.

“When Daniel called you tonight, you weren’t just listening.””

She pointed to my phone.

“You recorded everything.””

I looked down.

The recording was still active.

I had forgotten.

Daniel had confessed.

Everything.

He looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw the truth.

May you like

He wasn’t angry because he lost.

He was angry because he underestimated me.
