Chapter 4: The Secret Behind The Success

Emily’s office felt smaller after she said his name.

I stared at her, waiting for her to explain.

“Daniel Whitmore,” she repeated.

The name echoed in my mind.

Daniel.

Our class president.

The boy everyone thought would become a billionaire before he turned thirty.

The boy who always had the newest clothes, the best grades, and a perfect smile whenever teachers were watching.

But there was something else I remembered.

The way Emily’s face changed whenever he walked into the room.

Not fear.

Not exactly.

Something closer to disappointment.

“Daniel?”” I asked.

“Your old business partner?””

Emily nodded.

“He’s the reason I disappeared after graduation.””

I sat forward.

“What happened?””

For a moment, Emily didn’t answer.

Outside the office, the restaurant continued moving. Glasses clinked. Guests laughed. Servers walked between tables.

But inside that room, it felt like we had traveled back ten years.

Emily opened the folder again.

“You remember our senior year?””

I nodded.

“Of course.””

She looked down.

“Everyone thought Daniel and I were working together on a scholarship project.””

“We were.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“I was.””

The words made me freeze.

“What do you mean?””

Emily leaned back.

“I created the entire project. The research. The business plan. The presentation.””

I frowned.

“But Daniel presented it.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Emily’s expression hardened slightly.

“Because he convinced me he would help me get recognition.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“He stole it?””

Emily didn’t answer immediately.

That was the answer.

“Teachers loved him,” she said quietly.

“Investors loved him. Everyone loved the version of the story where the confident, popular boy had created something incredible.””

“And you?””

“I was the girl standing behind him.””

I remembered that day.

The school auditorium.

Daniel on stage.

Everyone applauding.

Emily sitting near the back.

Quiet.

I had assumed she was just being humble.

I had been wrong.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Emily smiled sadly.

“Who would have believed me?””

I opened my mouth.

Then stopped.

Because the truth hurt.

I had been one of those people.

Not because I wanted to hurt her.

Because I never bothered to ask.

A knock interrupted us.

The manager stepped inside.

“Ms. Carter, I’m sorry, but there’s another issue.””

Emily looked up.

“What now?””

He placed a tablet on the desk.

“The investors received a message.””

Emily picked it up.

Her eyes scanned the screen.

“What does it say?””

The manager hesitated.

“They’re questioning whether you’re capable of running the restaurant.””

My hands clenched.

“Because of Daniel?””

Emily nodded.

“He’s telling them I only inherited this place. That I’m not the person who built it.””

“That’s a lie.””

“Yes.””

Her calm response surprised me.

“You’re not angry?””

Emily looked at the restaurant floor through the glass wall.

“I was angry for years.””

She paused.

“But anger doesn’t build anything.””

That was when I realized something.

Emily wasn’t the same girl from high school.

She wasn’t the girl who stayed silent because she was weak.

She stayed silent because she was stronger than everyone expected.

Then my phone buzzed.

I looked down.

A message.

From Vanessa.

I almost ignored it.

But the preview made my heart drop.

*You need to ask Emily what happened the night before graduation.*

I looked up.

Emily noticed my expression.

“What is it?””

I locked my phone.

“Nothing.””

She studied me.

“Rachel.””

I hated that she still knew when I was lying.

“What happened that night?”” I asked.

Her face changed.

Not much.

Just enough.

“You remember?””

“I remember everyone saying you left because you couldn’t handle losing.””

Emily looked away.

“That’s what Daniel wanted everyone to believe.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she walked toward a locked cabinet in the corner.

She opened it.

Inside were old photographs, documents, and a small envelope.

She picked up the envelope carefully.

“I kept this for ten years.””

“Why?””

“Because I wasn’t ready.””

She handed it to me.

My name was written on the front.

My breath caught.

“Why does this have my name on it?””

Emily looked at me.

“Because you were there.””

I stared at the envelope.

“I don’t remember.””

“That’s because Daniel made sure you wouldn’t.””

The room went cold.

I looked at her.

“What did he do?””

Emily’s voice dropped.

“He changed your memory of what happened.””

I frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

Emily looked toward the restaurant.

Then back at me.

“No.””

She opened the envelope.

“It’s just something you were never supposed to find out.””

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph from graduation night.

And standing beside Emily and Daniel was me.

But behind us was something I had never seen before.

May you like

Someone holding a folder.

A folder with my name on it.
