Chapter 3: The Woman in the Recording
I didn't remember the drive home.
I remembered Noah's small hand wrapped around two of my fingers. I remembered Michael checking the rearview mirror every few seconds. And I remembered Vanessa standing beneath the hotel's entrance lights, watching our car disappear into the Atlanta night.
She hadn't followed us.
That frightened me more than if she had.
At home, I carried Noah upstairs and helped him out of his ruined suit. He flinched when I reached for the buttons.
I immediately pulled my hands away.
"Sorry, buddy. I'll let you do it.""
He looked up at me cautiously.
"You're not mad?""
"Not at you.""
"Even though I ruined your wedding?""
I sat on the edge of his bed.
"You didn't ruin anything. The wedding was supposed to be about two people promising to take care of each other. Vanessa broke that promise before we even left the ballroom.""
Noah considered this.
"Does that mean she's not my mommy anymore?""
I struggled to find the right answer.
"It means you don't have to call her anything you don't want to call her.""
He nodded, then pulled his stuffed rabbit beneath his chin.
"Can you stay until I fall asleep?""
"Of course.""
After he drifted off, I returned downstairs and found Michael at the kitchen table. He had connected Noah's phone to a charger and was examining the recordings.
"I counted seven files," he said.
"Some are only a few seconds long.""
"Have you listened to them?""
"Not all of them. I wanted you here.""
I sat beside him.
"Start with the oldest.""
The first recording contained mostly traffic noise. Then Vanessa's voice emerged, sharp and impatient.
"Get in the car, Noah. We're late.""
A child answered.
"Where are we going?""
"Somewhere special.""
"Can Daddy come?""
"No. This is our little secret.""
Michael paused the recording.
His knuckles whitened around the phone.
"Daniel, how many times has she taken him somewhere without telling you?""
I stared at the screen.
"She said she was taking him to preschool.""
"That's not what she said.""
I knew that.
For the past month, Vanessa had volunteered to handle Noah's morning routine twice a week. She'd told me she wanted to bond with him, and I had been grateful.
I worked in commercial real estate. My days often began before sunrise, and I sometimes didn't return until evening. Vanessa had offered to take Noah to preschool on those mornings, saving me the expense of a driver.
I'd trusted her.
Now every memory seemed to have a hidden edge.
Michael played the next recording.
Vanessa's voice came through the speaker.
"Look at the building, Noah. Doesn't it look familiar?""
A man's voice answered.
"He's younger than you said.""
"He's four," Vanessa replied.
"What did you expect?""
The man chuckled.
"Does he know why he's here?""
"No. And he won't.""
I leaned forward.
"Who is that?""
"I don't recognize him," Michael said.
The recording continued.
"Where's the paperwork?"" the man asked.
"In my bag.""
"And the father?""
"Daniel signs whatever I put in front of him. He trusts me.""
My stomach twisted.
The man laughed again.
"That makes this easier.""
Then Noah's voice broke through.
"I wanna go home.""
Vanessa answered coldly.
"We're not leaving until I say so.""
I stopped the recording.
For several seconds, neither Michael nor I spoke.
"She took him to meet a stranger," I said.
Michael nodded slowly.
"And she was carrying paperwork.""
I thought about the financial documents Vanessa had asked me to sign two weeks earlier. She had explained that they were routine forms for updating our household insurance and organizing our estate.
I'd signed them at the kitchen counter while answering work emails.
"What paperwork?"" I whispered.
Michael looked at me.
"Do you have copies?""
"Somewhere.""
"Find them tomorrow. Tonight, we need to understand these recordings.""
He opened the newest file.
A door slammed. A car engine hummed in the background.
Then the unfamiliar woman spoke.
"Vanessa, this has gone too far. You told me Daniel knew about the arrangement.""
"He doesn't need to know everything.""
"He's the boy's father!""
"And I'm his wife.""
"That doesn't give you the right to take him to that office and pretend he's someone else's child.""
My chest tightened.
Michael looked at me sharply.
The recording continued.
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"Keep yours down. Noah can hear you.""
"I don't care. This is wrong.""
"You accepted the money.""
"I accepted money to help you arrange the meeting. I didn't agree to lie to a child.""
A pause followed.
Then Vanessa said, "If you tell Daniel, you'll lose everything.""
The woman laughed bitterly.
"You think I care about the money anymore?""
A car door opened.
Before the recording ended, the woman spoke one final sentence.
"One day, Daniel is going to find out who Noah's mother really was.""
The screen went dark.
I sat motionless.
Emily was Noah's mother. There had never been any doubt about that. I had held him moments after his birth.
I had watched Emily kiss his forehead in the hospital. I had been there when she whispered his name.
But the woman's words had been deliberate.
Who Noah's mother really was.
Michael broke the silence.
"Daniel, do you think she meant Emily?""
"I don't know.""
"Could she have been talking about someone else?""
I shook my head, but my thoughts were already racing.
Emily had been adopted as a baby. She'd told me that when we were dating, explaining that she had never met her biological parents. Margaret had raised her with fierce devotion and rarely discussed the adoption.
I'd never questioned it.
Why would I?
Emily was my wife. Noah was my son.
Nothing else mattered.
Or so I had believed.
I opened the phone's remaining files. Most contained fragments of conversations, indistinct noises, or Noah asking to go home.
Then I found a video recorded in a brightly lit office.
Vanessa sat across a desk from a silver-haired man. A folder lay between them.
The man turned a document toward her.
"If Daniel refuses to sign, we have a problem.""
Vanessa tapped the paper with one red fingernail.
"He won't refuse. Once he understands what this means for Noah, he'll do exactly what I tell him.""
"And if he asks about the boy's inheritance?""
Vanessa smiled.
"Then I'll remind him that the money was never supposed to belong to him.""
Michael leaned closer to the screen.
"What inheritance?""
I had no answer.
The video ended with the man closing the folder. For a fraction of a second, the label on its cover was visible.
*BROOKS FAMILY TRUST — BENEFICIARY REVIEW.*
I knew that name.
My father had established the trust when Noah was born, placing a substantial portion of his commercial property holdings into a fund that would become available to Noah when he turned twenty-five.
The documents were confidential.
Only my father, our attorney, and I were supposed to know the details.
I replayed the video.
Vanessa's smile was unmistakable.
She hadn't married me simply to become part of my family.
She had been studying my family long before our wedding.
Suddenly, my phone rang.
The caller ID displayed a name I hadn't seen in months.
Margaret's former attorney, Richard Hale.
I answered immediately.
"Richard? What's going on?""
His voice was tense.
"Daniel, I was hoping to reach you before the wedding, but your wife intercepted my calls.""
I stood so quickly that my chair scraped across the kitchen floor.
"What does Vanessa have to do with you?""
"Everything, I'm afraid. Margaret left instructions that I was to contact you if anyone attempted to alter Noah's trust or question his parentage.""
My mouth went dry.
"His parentage?""
Richard exhaled.
"Daniel, I need you to listen carefully. Your late wife asked me to keep a letter until Noah was old enough to understand it. But after what happened tonight, I believe you need to see it now.""
I gripped the phone.
"What's in the letter?""
Richard hesitated.
Then he said, "The truth about why Margaret adopted Emily—and why someone has been trying to get access to Noah's inheritance.""
A floorboard creaked upstairs.
I turned toward the staircase.
Noah stood in the doorway, clutching his stuffed rabbit.
His eyes were wide.
"Daddy?""
I hurried toward him.
"What's wrong, buddy?""
He looked at the phone in my hand.
Then he whispered, "Is Grandma's secret about the lady who came to my school?""
I froze.
"What lady?""
May you like
Noah swallowed hard.
"The one who said she was my real mommy.""
