Chapter 2: The Recording in His Pocket
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
The ballroom lights seemed too bright. The guests stood in frozen clusters around overturned chairs and abandoned champagne glasses.
Noah clung to me as if someone might try to pull him away.
I carried him toward a quiet alcove near the emergency exit.
"Buddy, listen to me," I said gently.
"You're not in trouble. I need you to tell me what you mean.""
He rubbed his face against my jacket, leaving another streak of frosting on the fabric.
"Promise you won't let her take me?""
"I promise I'll keep you safe.""
"Even if she gets mad?""
"Even then.""
His lower lip trembled.
"She says you're going to believe her because she's your wife.""
A cold sensation crept down my spine.
"What does she do when I'm at work?""
Before he could answer, Vanessa appeared at the entrance to the alcove.
"Daniel, we need to talk. Privately.""
"No.""
Her eyes widened.
"Excuse me?""
"You heard me.""
She looked at Noah, and her expression hardened.
"Sweetheart, tell Daddy you're tired. You know how you get when you're tired.""
Noah buried his face against my neck.
Vanessa sighed loudly enough for the nearby guests to hear.
"This is exactly what I mean. He knows how to manipulate you.""
I tightened my arms around him.
"Go away, Vanessa.""
Her cheeks flushed.
"You are humiliating me in front of everyone.""
I stared at her.
"You did that yourself.""
For the first time since I'd met her, Vanessa seemed unable to find an immediate answer.
Then Patricia appeared behind her.
"Daniel, think carefully before you destroy your marriage over a child's tantrum.""
I turned toward her.
"If you call what just happened a tantrum again, this conversation is over.""
Patricia drew herself up.
"Vanessa has sacrificed so much to become part of this family.""
"What exactly has she sacrificed?""
"Her time. Her freedom. Her entire life!""
Noah began shaking harder.
I looked down at him.
"Let's get you cleaned up, buddy.""
My brother Michael appeared with a damp towel and a bottle of water. His face was pale with anger.
"I've got the car ready," he said.
"We can leave whenever you want.""
"Thank you.""
Vanessa stepped directly into our path.
"You are not taking my stepson away from me.""
Michael stared at her.
"Move.""
"This is a family matter.""
"Then stop treating the four-year-old like he's your enemy.""
Her jaw clenched.
I carried Noah around her.
As we crossed the lobby, he suddenly grabbed my lapel.
"Daddy, my phone.""
"What about it?""
"It's in my pocket.""
I remembered the old smartphone I'd given him months earlier. It had no active cellular service, but it could connect to Wi-Fi and record videos. Noah mostly used it to play simple games or listen to stories.
I had thought it was harmless entertainment.
Now he was trying to reach into his cake-covered suit.
I helped him pull it free.
The screen was cracked across one corner, but it still worked.
"I recorded something," he whispered.
Michael looked at me.
"Daniel, what is he talking about?""
"I don't know yet.""
Noah's eyes darted toward the ballroom.
"Grandma Emily told me to.""
I went still.
Emily's mother, Margaret, had died the previous winter. She had spent Noah's first years helping us through the hardest days of our lives.
"What did Grandma tell you, sweetheart?""
"She said if somebody scares me and tells me not to tell you, I should remember what happened. She said I could use the phone.""
My throat tightened.
"Did something scare you?""
He nodded.
I sat on a bench and placed him beside me. Michael stood between us and the lobby, watching for Vanessa.
Noah tapped the screen with his small index finger.
"I saved it here.""
A folder appeared. Inside were several short recordings, each labeled with a date.
The oldest was from three weeks earlier.
The newest was from two nights ago.
My hands started to sweat.
"Did you make these all by yourself?""
"No. Sometimes I put the phone in my backpack. Sometimes I hide it under my bed.""
"Why?""
"Because she says I can't tell you.""
I opened the first recording.
At first, all I heard was the muffled sound of a car engine and a woman's voice giving directions.
Then Vanessa spoke.
"Your daddy thinks you're at preschool, but he has no idea where I really take you.""
A second woman answered.
"When are you finally going to tell Daniel what you've been doing with his son?""
The recording ended.
I stared at the screen.
Michael leaned closer.
"Play that again.""
I did.
The second woman's voice was unfamiliar, but the question sent a chill through me.
Where had Vanessa been taking my son?
And why had another woman known about it?
Before I could open the next file, footsteps pounded across the lobby.
Vanessa rushed toward us, her wedding dress gathered in one hand.
"Daniel, give me that phone!""
I stood.
"No.""
Her face had lost all its color.
"That belongs to me!""
"Noah said it's his.""
"He's four! He doesn't understand what he's recording!""
"Then you shouldn't have anything to worry about.""
She lunged toward the device.
Michael stepped between us.
"Back off, Vanessa.""
She turned on him.
"Stay out of this!""
I slipped the phone into my jacket pocket.
"Tell me where you've been taking my son.""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears so quickly that, under different circumstances, I might have believed them.
"I was trying to help him.""
"Help him do what?""
She looked at Noah.
For one second, I saw something in her face that didn't resemble anger or embarrassment.
It looked like fear.
Then she whispered, "You don't understand what Emily's mother was involved in.""
My blood ran cold.
"What did you just say?""
Vanessa backed away.
"You need to stop listening to that woman.""
"Margaret is dead.""
"I know that!""
Her voice cracked across the lobby.
Everyone nearby turned.
Vanessa pressed a trembling hand against her mouth.
May you like
Then she looked at Noah and said the words that changed everything.
"Your grandmother should never have told you about the money.""
