Chapter 11: The Man Who Wanted His Son Back

Jonathan Reed arrived at my attorney's office the following morning carrying a leather briefcase and an expression of exhausted determination.

He was in his late fifties, with silver at his temples and deep lines around his mouth. He wore an expensive suit, but his hands trembled when he placed the briefcase on the table.

Laura sat beside me.

Richard Hale joined us by video call.

Jonathan looked directly at me.

"I know you hate me.""

"I don't know you well enough to hate you," I replied.

"But I know you've been involved in a scheme to gain access to my son's inheritance.""

His jaw tightened.

"I never asked for his money.""

"Your name is on a document requesting control of the trust.""

"Vanessa told me the trust was the only way to protect Noah from being taken by people who wanted to exploit him.""

I leaned forward.

"You're going to have to do better than that.""

Jonathan opened his briefcase and removed a stack of documents.

"For years, I believed my son had died. Patricia told me that Elena's baby had suffered complications and that the hospital had been unable to save him. I received a certificate confirming the death.""

"Did you ever see the body?""

He looked down.

"No.""

"Did you question that?""

"I was devastated. Elena and I had separated shortly before the birth. Patricia said Elena didn't want to see me, and I believed her.""

"Why?""

Jonathan swallowed.

"Because I had made mistakes. I had been unfaithful, and our relationship was collapsing. I thought Elena had every reason to keep the child away from me.""

I studied his face.

"Then Vanessa contacted you.""

"Yes. She told me she'd discovered evidence that my son might still be alive. She showed me a photograph of Noah and a copy of a birth record.""

"Why didn't you contact me directly?""

"She said you knew everything and were willing to cooperate. She said the legal paperwork was already being prepared.""

I laughed without humor.

"She lied to both of us.""

Jonathan nodded.

"I understand that now.""

He slid a document toward Laura.

"This is the original death certificate Patricia gave me. I've since learned it was never properly registered with the state.""

Laura examined it.

"Where did you get this?""

"From my personal records. I gave it to an independent investigator six months ago.""

I stared at him.

"You've been investigating this for six months?""

"Yes. But I didn't know who Noah was until Vanessa identified him.""

"Did you know Emily was his adoptive mother?""

"No.""

"Did you know she was Elena's biological daughter?""

Jonathan's face changed.

"What?""

Richard spoke through the laptop.

"Jonathan, are you saying you didn't know Emily's biological identity?""

"No. I never met Emily. I knew Elena had given birth to a daughter, but Patricia told me the baby died.""

Richard looked down at his papers.

"Then someone has been withholding information from you as well.""

Jonathan pressed his palms against the table.

"I want the truth. Whatever it costs me.""

I studied him.

"What do you expect from Noah?""

"Nothing.""

"Nothing?""

"I want to meet him someday, if he wants to meet me. I want to know whether he's healthy. I want him to know that I never knowingly abandoned him.""

His voice broke slightly.

"But I won't ask him to call me Dad. You have been raising him. You have been there for him. I understand that.""

For the first time, I saw something other than entitlement in his expression.

It didn't make him trustworthy.

But it made him human.

Laura opened another folder.

"Jonathan, did you authorize Vanessa to file a claim against the trust?""

"No. I authorized her to help establish my parental rights. I never agreed to any transfer of money.""

"Did you sign this document?""

She showed him the proposed agreement.

He stared at it.

"No.""

"Your signature appears on page three.""

"That's a forgery.""

I looked at him.

"How convenient.""

He met my eyes.

"Daniel, I know you have every reason to distrust me. But I would never sign away my son's inheritance to Vanessa Reed.""

Richard interrupted.

"There's a problem with the filing. The attached document cites an old trust provision that was removed years ago. Whoever prepared it had access to an outdated copy of the agreement.""

I turned to Laura.

"Who had access to the old copy?""

She checked her notes.

"According to the archive records, Patricia Reed requested a copy eleven months ago.""

The room went still.

Jonathan stared at the table.

"She told me she was helping us.""

"She was helping herself," I replied.

He rubbed his face.

"I should have known.""

"Why didn't you question her?""

"Because I wanted to believe my son was alive.""

I couldn't argue with that.

The desire to find a missing child could make a person vulnerable to almost any promise.

But it didn't excuse what had happened to Noah.

Laura gathered the documents.

"We'll provide these statements to the court. Until the facts are established, nobody should approach Noah or attempt to change his custody arrangements.""

Jonathan nodded.

"I agree.""

As he stood, I asked one final question.

"Why did Vanessa marry me?""

He stopped.

"I don't know everything she intended. But Patricia told me something months ago that I didn't understand at the time.""

"What?""

"She said the Brooks family had been protecting a secret for generations. She said that once Vanessa married you, she would have the legal standing to challenge the trust.""

I felt sick.

"She married me for access to Noah's inheritance.""

Jonathan looked miserable.

"I believe so.""

After he left, Laura received a message from the hospital's records department.

They had located an additional file associated with Emily's adoption.

The file included a handwritten statement signed by Margaret on the day she brought Emily home.

Laura read it aloud.

"I understand that the child placed in my care is being released under an amended identity. I accept responsibility for her upbringing and agree not to pursue the biological family's claims unless the child herself requests the truth.""

I stared at the page.

Margaret hadn't merely been unaware of the altered records.

She had knowingly accepted them.

Richard's face appeared on the laptop.

"She may have believed she was protecting Emily, but this complicates the legal history considerably.""

I shook my head.

"Emily deserved to know who she was.""

"Yes," Richard replied quietly.

"She did.""

My phone rang.

It was Michael.

"Daniel, you need to get home.""

"What happened?""

"Vanessa is here.""

I stood.

"Is Noah okay?""

"He's upstairs. But she brought Patricia, and they have a police officer with them.""

My heart slammed against my ribs.

"Why?""

Michael's voice dropped.

"They're claiming you illegally withheld Noah from his legal guardian.""

I grabbed my keys.

"Don't let anyone upstairs.""

May you like

Then Michael said something that made me stop at the office door.

"Daniel, Patricia has a court document with a judge's signature.""
