Chapter 9: The Husband Who Knew Too Much

The hardest thing about betrayal is not discovering someone lied.

It is realizing they lied while looking directly into your eyes.

I stared at Daniel.

Waiting.

Hoping.

Maybe there was an explanation.

Maybe there was something I didn’t understand.

“Tell me,” I said.

My voice was quiet.

“Where were you two days before the wedding?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Emma.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Not this time.””

My father stood beside me.

“Answer.””

Daniel looked exhausted.

“I went to see Marcus.””

My chest tightened.

“You found him?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked down.

“Because I wanted answers.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Answers?””

I pointed at the documents.

“You knew he was alive.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I suspected.””

“You suspected?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

His silence answered.

I looked away.

Because somehow, every secret led back to the same thing.

He chose silence.

Daniel stepped closer.

“I was trying to protect you.””

The words made me angry.

“Protect me?””

“Yes.””

“By lying?””

His face changed.

“I thought if I handled it myself—”

“You thought you were saving me?””

I interrupted.

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Daniel looked hurt.

But I didn’t stop.

“You didn’t want me to know your family was falling apart.””

“That’s not true.””

“Then why?””

He couldn’t answer.

Because the truth was simple.

He cared about losing control.

Not losing me.

Rebecca quietly interrupted.

“There’s something else.””

Everyone turned.

She looked at Daniel.

“When you met Marcus, what did he tell you?””

Daniel became still.

“He told me my mother framed him.””

“And?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“He gave me evidence.””

My heart dropped.

“You had evidence?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

My father’s expression darkened.

“Where is it?””

Daniel whispered:

“I destroyed it.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the air had disappeared.

“You destroyed it?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I thought it was fake.””

Rebecca stared at him.

“You thought it was fake?””

“Yes.””

“Even after Marcus told you the truth?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I didn’t want to believe my family did that.””

I nodded slowly.

There it was.

The real reason.

Not ignorance.

Not confusion.

Denial.

He chose the easier truth.

The one where his family was innocent.

The one where I was the outsider.

My father stepped away.

“Emma.””

I looked at him.

“We need to leave.””

Daniel panicked.

“Wait.””

I turned.

“What?””

“I love you.””

Those words would have destroyed me yesterday.

Today, they sounded different.

Empty.

“I know.””

Daniel looked surprised.

I continued.

“But love without loyalty is just a promise people break.””

His eyes filled.

“I can fix this.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

A tear slipped down his face.

“I can’t lose you.””

I almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

But then I remembered the ballroom.

The torn dress.

The silence.

The moment I looked at my husband and realized I was alone.

My father opened the door.

Before I left, my phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time from Marcus.

*Emma, I need to meet you before they find me.*

Attached was a location.

Then another message appeared.

*Your husband was not the only person who knew the truth.*

I stared.

A second message arrived.

*Your father has a secret too.*

Slowly, I looked at Jonathan.

He was watching me.

And from his expression…

I knew.

He already understood what I had just received.

“Dad?””

The room became silent.

“What secret?”” I asked.

My father looked away.

May you like

And for the first time in my life…

My father was the one who couldn’t meet my eyes.
