Chapter 8: The Evidence They Buried

The next morning, the world knew about the wedding.

Not the truth.

Not yet.

Only the version Eleanor wanted.

The headlines called it a “family dispute.””

The photos showed Chloe crying.

They showed me standing beside my torn dress.

They did not show Eleanor’s heel.

They did not show Chloe’s accusation.

They did not show the truth.

I sat at my father’s house, staring at the news article.

“She’s controlling the story,” I said.

My father looked at his laptop.

“For now.””

Daniel sat across the room.

He had barely spoken since last night.

For once, he wasn’t defending anyone.

Maybe because there was nothing left to defend.

Rebecca connected the flash drive.

A series of files appeared.

Financial records.

Emails.

Contracts.

Photos.

My father opened the first file.

Then he stopped.

“Emma.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“This involves you.””

I walked closer.

On the screen was a document.

A transfer agreement.

My name was on it.

I felt confused.

“I never signed that.””

Rebecca nodded.

“That’s the point.””

Daniel stood.

“What is it?””

She looked at him.

“Your family attempted to use Emma’s identity as collateral.””

My face went cold.

“What?””

Rebecca explained.

“Three years ago, when Daniel’s company was collapsing, Eleanor convinced investors that Emma’s family would guarantee the company.””

I stared.

“But I never agreed.””

“No.””

Rebecca pointed at the document.

“Because they forged your signature.””

The room went silent.

Daniel looked horrified.

“My family forged her signature?””

Rebecca nodded.

“They needed your father’s name connected to the company.””

My father leaned back.

His expression was controlled.

But I knew him.

He was furious.

“Why didn’t you come forward?””

Rebecca looked down.

“Because I was threatened.””

“By who?””

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t have to.

Everyone knew.

Daniel looked broken.

“I spent three years believing Marcus betrayed me.””

Rebecca sighed.

“Marcus found these documents.””

Daniel froze.

“He tried to tell me.””

“Yes.””

“And my family stopped him.””

“Yes.””

Daniel covered his face.

The truth was destroying the man I once loved.

But a part of me wondered if it was enough.

Because truth discovered too late still leaves scars.

My phone suddenly rang.

A private number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice spoke.

“Emma Carter?””

I froze.

“Yes?””

“I’m calling from the legal department of Vale Holdings.””

My father looked at me.

“Put it on speaker.””

I did.

The man continued.

“We have reason to believe the evidence you possess connects to an illegal financial operation involving Eleanor Whitmore and Chloe Whitmore.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The names were becoming public.

Finally.

The man continued.

“However, there is one more issue.””

My stomach tightened.

“What issue?””

A pause.

Then:

“Marcus Vale is alive.””

Everyone looked at each other.

I gripped the phone.

“What?””

The man continued.

“He has been hiding because he was collecting evidence.””

My father stood.

“Where is he?””

“I cannot disclose that.””

“Why?””

Another pause.

“Because someone tried to find him last night.””

Rebecca went pale.

“Who?””

The man answered:

“Someone from Daniel’s family.””

Daniel immediately stood.

“No.””

The man continued.

“We have security footage.””

My blood ran cold.

“Of who?””

The answer came slowly.

“Your husband.””

The room became silent.

I looked at Daniel.

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I didn’t.””

But his voice lacked confidence.

The man continued.

“Mr. Carter, the footage shows you entering the location where Marcus was hiding.””

Daniel stepped back.

“That’s impossible.””

“When?””

The man answered.

“Two days before the wedding.””

I stared at my husband.

Two days before everything collapsed.

Two days before Eleanor tore my dress.

Two days before I discovered the truth.

My father looked at Daniel.

“Where were you?””

May you like

Daniel said nothing.

And that silence was louder than any confession.
