Chapter 7: Eleanor’s Last Warning

The front door opened before anyone reached it.

Eleanor walked inside like she owned the house.

Not like a guest.

Like a queen returning to her throne.

Her expensive coat hung perfectly over her shoulders. Her makeup was flawless. Her expression was calm.

Too calm.

Behind her stood Chloe.

The same woman who had screamed in the ballroom.

The same woman who had pointed at me and called me a thief.

But tonight, she looked different.

Nervous.

My father noticed immediately.

“So,” he said quietly, “the people responsible decided to come together.””

Eleanor’s eyes moved around the room.

The folder.

The flash drive.

Rebecca.

Then me.

Her expression hardened.

“Emma.””

I hated how casually she said my name.

As if she hadn’t ripped my dress apart hours earlier.

As if she hadn’t watched me stand there humiliated while her family laughed.

“Eleanor,” I replied.

She smiled.

A cold, empty smile.

“I heard there was some confusion tonight.””

I almost laughed.

“Confusion?””

“Yes.””

She walked closer.

“Family misunderstandings happen.””

My father stepped forward.

“No.””

His voice stopped her.

“This was not a misunderstanding.””

Eleanor looked at him.

“You must be Jonathan Carter.””

My father didn’t respond.

She smiled slightly.

“I wondered when you would finally reveal yourself.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“You knew?””

Eleanor looked at me.

“Of course I knew.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stared at his mother.

“What?””

She ignored him.

“I knew exactly who Emma was.””

My heart sank.

“What are you talking about?””

Eleanor walked toward the table and picked up the folder.

“You thought you were hiding your identity.””

She looked at me.

“But we knew.””

Daniel looked confused.

“You knew Emma’s family?””

Eleanor smiled.

“Daniel, your wife has never been ordinary.””

The way she said it made my skin crawl.

Like being different was something dangerous.

My father’s eyes narrowed.

“What did you want from my daughter?””

Eleanor placed the folder down.

“Protection.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She laughed softly.

“Do you really think Daniel’s family survived all these years because of luck?””

Nobody spoke.

Then she said:

“We survived because Emma’s father saved us.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked sick.

“What are you saying?””

Eleanor turned to her son.

“Your company exists because of her family.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Her voice sharpened.

“And I spent years trying to make sure Emma stayed attached to you.””

The room froze.

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Eleanor didn’t look ashamed.

“You were useful.””

Daniel stepped back.

“Mom.””

“You needed her.””

The words hit harder than any insult.

Not because they came from Eleanor.

Because Daniel heard them too.

And he knew they were true.

I looked at my husband.

“Did you know?””

He shook his head quickly.

“No.””

But I couldn’t tell if I believed him.

Eleanor continued.

“Your father wanted to expose us.””

She looked at Jonathan.

“So we protected ourselves.””

My father’s expression remained calm.

“You manipulated my daughter.””

Eleanor shrugged.

“She was in love.””

The room became silent.

I felt something inside me break.

Because that was the worst part.

I had loved them.

I had trusted them.

I had defended people who were quietly calculating how to use me.

Chloe suddenly spoke.

“Mom, stop.””

Everyone looked at her.

For the first time all night, Chloe looked afraid.

Eleanor turned.

“Be quiet.””

Chloe swallowed.

“But the documents—”

Eleanor’s eyes flashed.

“Do you want to lose everything?””

Chloe immediately stopped talking.

My father noticed.

“So even your daughter is afraid of you.””

Eleanor ignored him.

She walked toward me.

“You should have stayed quiet, Emma.””

I didn’t move.

“Like I did for three years?””

Her expression changed.

“Yes.””

She leaned closer.

“You had a comfortable life.””

I stared at her.

“A comfortable life where I was insulted?””

“A comfortable life where you had everything you needed.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“I had a life where everyone needed me silent.””

Eleanor smiled.

“You think your father can save you?””

She looked toward Jonathan.

“He can destroy some things.””

A pause.

“But not everything.””

My father stepped forward.

“You’re right.””

Everyone looked at him.

“I can’t undo what my daughter suffered.””

His voice became colder.

“But I can make sure the people responsible answer for it.””

Eleanor laughed.

“You think evidence scares me?””

Rebecca suddenly spoke.

“It should.””

Eleanor turned.

Rebecca held up the flash drive.

Because she knew something Eleanor didn’t.

The evidence wasn’t just financial records.

It was proof of everything.

Eleanor’s face finally changed.

For the first time…

Fear appeared.

And Daniel noticed.

“Mom.””

His voice was barely a whisper.

“What’s on that drive?””

Eleanor didn’t answer.

She just stared at Rebecca.

Then at me.

And I realized something.

May you like

The woman who had spent years making me feel powerless…

Was finally afraid of me.
